Science Resources
Science is all about exploration. It is less about solving the problems we know, but thinking about problems we don't even know exist. Science is where imagination and curiosity meet innovation and communication. Science is life. Take a look and explore the topics we'll be studying this year.
All Science, All the time...
we focus on the production of waste, both natural and human-made. We learn that the natural environment is excellent at recycling and disposal. We also explore the fact that human activity often causes waste, while studying alternatives for the responsible use and disposal of materials.

We focus on studying the effects of light on things within their environment, including light sources, materials that light can pass through, and what happens when a material blocks or changes the path of light. Then, we move onto exploring shadows, especially as they relate to movement of light sources. We'll explore with mirrors, prisms, and other materials to examine their effects on light.

& Vehicles that Move
|
These two science units are traditionally combined in grade 4, as they are so well interconnected. We begin by studying Wheels & levers, typically called "Simple Machines", and their individual components: levers, inclined planes, wedges, pulleys, wheels & Axles, and screws. We study assembly, operation, and use of simple machines, exploring different methods and techniques of transferring motion and force. Then, using these learned skills, students apply their knowledge to build vehicles that move, including experimenting with different types of thrust or propulsion.

We focus on the needs of plants, understanding that they all require different components in their environment. This unit is very hands-on, as we will be together raising plants within our classroom. We will also study the growth of plants within our community, as well as Fish Creek Park. A large part of this exploration is the ability to recognize and identify the importance of leaves, stems, roots, and flowers of plants.
