We worked with Ms. Lorway this afternoon. She showed us some very cool ways to model what multiplication looks like using cusinaire rods. We also talked about how 4 x 7 = 7 x 4. We can prove that now!
BW shared with us a presentation he made about Alberta. The song that accompanies the presentation is below. Great job! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPeUW5YdWGQ Please note that booking for parent-teacher interviews is now open. They happen next Thursday (21st, 4-8pm) and Friday (22nd, 8-1pm). Students are welcome to attend, but this is not a student-led conference. Please return forms regarding:
Please do not forget your responsibilities on D2L! Remember, the minimum expectation is posting twice per week about your home reading book. There is also a free discussion space, where you're able to share exciting news from your world. Have a great weekend! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 1): http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
This morning we began working with open number lines in math. This is a great way to work with number relationships and adding and subtracting. We'll be looking more closely at subtraction next.
Travel Planning presentations were this afternoon. We are almost finished them, and we'll be studying Alberta's dinosaur history next. We had a great time this morning with Mrs. K. We worked on estimating addition problems, then the problem of the week, if we had time.
Travel Planning presentations begin tomorrow. Groups do not have to present their work, but some groups have chosen to do so to showcase their learning. Please note that booking for parent-teacher interviews is now open. They happen next Thursday (21st, 4-8pm) and Friday (22nd, 8-1pm). Students are welcome to attend, but this is not a student-led conference. A bit of a change: we will be doing our final study of Alberta's natural regions this week, by studying our rich dinosaur history. Our aboriginal culture will be our next topic of study in Social. We met with our grade 1 buddies this morning. We together read "Katy and the Big Snow", then our own just-right books. Finally, we chatted about our holidays, since we haven't seen each other in 3 weeks. At the end of the day, we also had a dance party with our buddies!
We finished our Alberta Travel planning project today. Wow, amazing work was done by the students, and we learned lots about Alberta's regions and its natural beauty. Great work! Next week, we're going to begin talking about Alberta's people, focusing on its aboriginal culture. We have amazing works of art on display in the library that we will use throughout our study. Wow, a full day! In math, We talked about why using the traditional algorithm for finding sums might be a good idea. We then walked through the steps of the algorithm, then gave students a mini-"test". We'll be moving into subtraction fairly quickly.

We continue to work on our musical words of wisdom posters for Mrs. Dennill. This task will continue for most of January.
We worked on using mathematical reasoning while using cusinaire rods. Some of this week will also be spent on learning strategies for addition and subtraction, including the standard algorithm. We'll also work on estimating sums and differences. Our Alberta Travel Planning projects are due on Friday. We will have work periods all week. Please do not forget your responsibilities on D2L! Welcome Back! I hope that your holidays were exciting and restful.
We jumped right into our learning today. We started by talking about our holidays and making connections between each other. Then, we worked through a few brain teasers to get ourselves back in the learning mode. We continued to read "Storm Child". We found out today that Isobel was traveling from her home in Fort Edmonton to her grandparents' home. She had never seen the rocky Mountains before, calling them "Paradise". We tested the snow machines that we built before the holiday break. Fortunately (or unfortunately) we still have much snow on the ground, so it was easy to test. It was great to see the students' creativity and ingenuity at work! Our Alberta Travel Planning projects are due on Friday. We will have work periods all week. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 1): http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
