Where did the time go this week, especially today. We had some independent work time this morning, where some students worked on catching-up on their work, while others continued to work on their genius hour passion projects. Before all this though, we had to burn off some steam during Boot Camp with Mme. Bergerman. As always, amazing work by the grade 4s!
We were in the idea lab this morning to work on building solutions to one of our friend's problem. We had to interview them, then identify an issue, then work in the idea lab to make the design come to life. Next week, we'll continue with the building, which might involve a re-think and re-design. We have a field trip to Telus Spark on February 8th. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer. It is an all day trip. Student forms for this trip went home today. Please return ASAP, thank you. There is no school for students on Monday, as it is a PD Day for all schools. We'll see you again on Tuesday! Have a great weekend... __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 1): http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
Today just flew by. We had buddies and music this morning. We finished building our towers with our buddies today. We used some of our knowledge from our first attempt to make our second iteration better. The Grade 4s were, once again, excellent role models.
This afternoon, we continued with Storm Child, then worked a little bit on our Alberta Landscape mosaics. Most students are finished the art, then we'll write about the inspiration for our art piece. We had some earned time this afternoon, as well. In that time, a pair of students worked to build and program our Lego Mindstorm robots. So cool to see their willingness to try new things... Hi! Mrs. K was in this morning. We worked on data analysis, and making sure that we're able to represent the relationships found in data. Typically this is done through graphing. We'll continue to work on this tomorrow. Oh, and that reminds me, don't forget your Writing Activity homework that was sent home today. We'll be using that tomorrow in Math.
We worked on Simple Machine centres this afternoon. These centres are a way for us to explore the world of simple machines, especially as it applies to making work easier. We have a field trip to Telus Spark on February 8th. Please contact me if you would like to volunteer. It is an all day trip. This morning, we discussed the question of Fossil Ownership in Alberta. Who Should Own fossils that are discovered, all Albertans or the people that find them? We'll be studying this topic all week.
We also began to practice our singing for the Celebration of Learning. The link and lyrics are posted in D2L for you to check out. In the afternoon, we continued our read-aloud novel, Storm Child. We're more than halfway through, and are making some great inferences about life in Alberta in the 1830s. At the end of the day, we began our study of simple machines, by discussing what these entail. We then watched a NOVA documentary on the Romans, as they were masters of using these simple machines. See you tomorrow! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 1): http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
We worked with our grade 1 buddies this morning. Our challenge was the same: build the tallest, free-standing structure possible with only using 7 sheets of re-used paper and masking tape. We looked at our last designs, and attempted to enhance our last tower. We'll continue to work with our buddies early next week to finish the build.
A new week means a new duolingo goal - 100 XP points must be earned by the end of the week. That relates to about 10 minutes per day for 5 days. Good luck! There is no school tomorrow. Please have a safe weekend. Bye for now! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 1): http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
This morning, we played a card game involving building numbers and subtraction. It is called "What's the Difference?" Students had to come up with strategies in order to "beat" their partners difference. Please ask your child how to play.
The afternoon was a tad warm. Something happened with the heat in the building, and it made our classroom feel like Maui - about +35 degrees Celsius! We were able to spend some of our learning time in the learning commons, where it was a bit more temperate. A new week means a new duolingo goal - 100 XP points must be earned by the end of the week. This morning we played with numbers...again, and made sure to understand that you can represent numbers in many ways. It just so happens that we use a base 10 system. Tomorrow will be spent on looking at ways to efficiently subtract two numbers.
We also continued to read Storm Child, and found out a little bit more about Isobel's Feisty personality. In the afternoon, we talked a little bit about our celebration of learning, and what will be on display for our parents. It's a bit of a surprise. We started to show our learning about alberta through art. We're making mosaics of our favourite Alberta region. We got a great start this morning.
We ended the day with a Dance Party with our Grade 1 buddies. We are such great leaders... Another whirlwind day. We started with music, ended with our buddies, and worked on problem-solving social issues in between. We managed to also squeeze in some time on Duolingo, as well.
Next week, we'll be looking at Alberta's dinosaur history, specifically studying the question, "Who Should Own Alberta's fossils?" Many new reminders have been added to the bottom on this post. Please make sure to have a look! Please note that booking for parent-teacher interviews is now open. They happen next Thursday (21st, 4-8pm) and Friday (22nd, 8-1pm). Students are welcome to attend, but this is not a student-led conference. Please return forms regarding:
Please do not forget your responsibilities on D2L! Remember, the minimum expectation is posting twice per week about your home reading book. There is also a free discussion space, where you're able to share exciting news from your world. Have a great weekend! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 1): http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
