Question of the night: Ask your parents why they gave you your name. Is there any reason?
Another full day of learning! We began the day with a see, think, wonder. This one was based on a science prompt, which made the conversation very different. The picture is attached. We also worked on our spelling patterns using "u" sounds as our guide. We will continue with those tomorrow. This is our last vowel sound, then we move into different types of spelling patterns. For math, we continued to work on our landscape plan, making sure to calculate all of the areas and perimeters of our backyard plan. We even got to "build" our creations, digitally, of course. In the afternoon, we went to music, then to the library for only a few minutes, then had an Independent work period. We are all finished our calgary name research, and we all have a date to add to our timeline. We'll finish that tomorrow, too. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: post 3 words with a "u" in it, and tell us if it's a long or short "u".
Remember, our goal is 15 comments today...let's go! What a busy day! This morning, we went right to working on our area and perimeter landscape project. Some of us finished the first designing part and some are even done calculating the area and perimeter of each section. We'll be working on building these as well, digitally on minecraft, of course! We also spent some time with Ms. Ferrari this morning, where she taught us contours and 3d perspective art. We'll definitely use this technique in our other art projects... The afternoon was spent on being junior historians. (Actually, don't forget to whisper the phrase, "I am a Historian" to Mr. V tomorrow morning.) We continued to work on our History of Alberta/Calgary timeline. We'll be filling that timeline throughout the entire year. Did you know that Alberta went from having 30 million buffalo in 1750 to zero in 1879. I wonder how that affected the people that relied on the buffalo for their survival? Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: If you could have anything in your backyard, what would it be?
Welcome back! Today we spent part of the morning focusing our attention on another See, Think, Wonder prompt. It is attached at the end of this post. Moving forward, we'll likely work on some see, Think, Wonders that are within the disciplines, like science, for example. In the morning, we also used our platform as recycling experts to teach other classes about proper recycling etiquette at Prince of Wales. We each went to either a grade 1, 2, or 3 class to share our knowledge. We'll keep track of how recycling is going over the next few weeks. In the afternoon, we worked on lowercase "w" in cursive handwriting, then moved onto a new math project. We're acting as junior landscapers to design Mr. V's backyard, complete with play area, garden, and deck. We'll be using our multiplication skills to figure out each feature's area and perimeter. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What are your weekend plans?
TGIF! Mrs. K was in for Mr. V this morning. The morning flew by. We started the day with PE, then went right into an independent work period. Our priorities included spelling word sounds "a" and "O", as well as research on historical Calgary names. After our IWP, we had some Francais time with Ms. Mosher's class. We ended the day with some earned time, which was well earned this week! Have a great weekend! Enjoy the weekend. ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: How was your last power hour of this term?
What a fantastic day... This morning, we worked in the idea lab to address our bottle biology problem. The issue was simple: our composting bottles tip over very easily. We needed our community to figure out a way to keep them up. We worked through some designs, played around with materials, then built our creations. It was super interesting to see the different designs, and how comfortable we are building with different materials. In the afternoon, we had our last power hour of the term. Wow, it is amazing to see all the incredible learning from these sessions! Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Besides you being born, what other important things happened on the day you were born? Hello! Wow, Wednesday already! We began the day with a quickdraw, where we had to talk about perspective. We also talked about making assumptions about what you can't see. Even though we think a hidden shape is a square, it doesn't make it true. The picture we talked about id attached. Have a look... The rest of the morning before recess was spent on sorting words with "o" sounds. First, we sorted into long and short sounds, then we sorted into specific spelling patterns. If you're interested, the task is also attached to this blog post. In math, we started to very briefly talk about double digit multiplication. We first work on breaking numbers apart, then we work on multiplying in parts. Finally, we'll put the parts together to get a final, 2-digit by 1 digit product. In the afternoon, we visited with Mrs. Dennill, then with our kindergarten buddies. We ended the day with a very brief conversation about our historical timeline. We made sure that history is dynamic, which means that our timeline can often change. Tomorrow we head to the idea lab to solve a "bottle biology" problem. Feel free to brainstorm about possible solutions tonight. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: List a couple of things you "Think" in the attached picture.
Wow, another amazing day of learning. We have been super focused this week! We started with another "see, think, Wonder" routine. The picture that inspired us is below. After our thinking this morning, we worked a little bit on our spelling. We've been working on long and short "o" sounds this week, which we'll continue tomorrow. In math, we're continuing to build our multiplication fluency through our use of cusinaire rods. At some point, the rods will go away and we'll start completing a multiplication table. It's not that cusinaire rods aren't useful, it's just that memorizing some basic facts is so much faster... In the afternoon, we filled our bottle composters. if you have more leaves or grass or anything else organic, please bring it in... Finally, we had an amazing discussion this afternoon about timelines. We placed the year 1875 on the timeline, and we originally placed it very close to the "beginning" of our timeline in the classroom: that's the year fort calgary was established as fort Brisebois. We were feeling pretty confident that was as far back as the history of calgary went...then, we watched the following video: Elder in the Making - part III, which mades us rethink our timeline completely. We'll continue this discussion throughout this whole year. See you tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: List a couple of things you "see" in the attached picture.
What an amazing day of learning! We started the day with a "See, think, Wonder" thinking routine. The picture we used is attached below. This thinking routine is designed to slow down our thinking, which is sometimes hard to do as kids...not to mention adults! We spent 2-3 minutes on each step, which feels like a lifetime. Try it our tonight with your parents. We followed that with a bit of work on arrays, again. Remember, arrays must be built in one direction (not the band), only have one colour (when using cusinaire rods), and make a full rectangle or square. We'll continue to work on this topic tomorrow. This helps us to visualize multiplication and area. In the afternoon, we talked more about our bottle biology project, and all students have a bit of homework tonight. They each need to bring to school some organic material to fill our biomes. Here is a link with some suggestions: Bottle Biology - Fill. We finished the day with a bit of ringette in pe, then our daily nominations for good sportsmanship behaviour. See you tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Write (at least) one word with a short "o" sound, and another with a long "o" sound.
Thank you to the parents that were able to volunteer their time this morning. We worked together with them to build our decomposing biomes, which we're calling "bottle biology"! We'll talk about the actual decomposing part next week. In math, we introduced a new, old word, "Array". We worked together to build some arrays using cusinaire rods. We continue to work together on building our multiplicative thinking, which includes our multiplication tables. It's an an ongoing project. We continued to work on our historical calgary name research. We have been finding out so much information about the history of our city, and we're now seeing how most of it is intertwined together...like a food chain! We also worked on some goal setting, which we based on our character traits. We watched the following video to get us inspired: Science of character. Please remember that tomorrow is a pd day, so there is no school. We'll continue all of our conversations and projects next week. Have a great weekend. Enjoy the snow. ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Tell us (at least) one interesting fact from your historical calgary research.
Hi! This morning, we continue to look at multiplication arrays while using cusinaire rods. We figured out that if we look at shapes in just one direction (or in a linear way) we'll get really good at our one's multiplication, but not much else. So, we started to look at shapes in 2-dimensions, with a length and a width. We'll do that again tomorrow. We also had a bit of a spelling check this morning. It's time to see how much our work on spelling is paying off! After recess, we worked on our historical calgary research. We've all been attached to a famous place, road, or "thing" in calgary, and now it's time to figure out why it's named the way it is. Psst, did you read this part...whisper the word "ringette" to mr. V tomorrow. In the afternoon, we had music, library, then finished the day with some ringette skills. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
