This week has been very exciting in Grade 4!. On monday, Mrs. K, our substitute teacher, came to our class, because Mr. Veronese and his wife had a baby boy on Saturday night. Mr and Mrs Veronese named him Daniel.. Twice this week, we were visited by mrs. Lorway, our math resident. She was talking to us about place value. We made models with 100's and we even made a realllllly long one with 1000 squares, It reached from one side of the room to the other. In Science, we began a new unit, waste in our world. This week, students were bringing in 'garbage'. We explored different objects, and how we can find a new use for them. I was very impressed with how many different ways you could use an egg carton. In social studies, we are learning about the different regions of alberta, and where they are located. please ask your child, what the different regions are. They should be able to name all 6. We worked on a fun puzzle on how to save water. we have been reading books about recycling and littering. I am thrilled with how responsible your children are. they take their silent reading very seriously, they are absolutely silent. They have worked very hard this week, and you should be proud! Have a terrific long weekend, there is NO school tomorrow. A hugely successful TeRRY Fox Run. Thank you to all of the parents and volunteers that made the event possible, and of course the students for showing great determination for the cause. A special congratulations to BW for having his head shaved for the 4th time!
If you have some time this weekend, please check out last week's problem of the Week. We're going to explore it next week. It can be found here: POTW Have a great weekend. Reminders
Thank you to everyone that is commenting on the blog. It's great to read your thoughts, and your thoughtful replies to others.
We looked at Terry Fox's life today, his dedication to his cause, and his courage. We watched an interview featuring his mom, which she shared some insights about Terry Fox. Here is a link about the international Terry Fox runs all over the world: International Terry Fox Runs. We did not have time to look at the math Problem of the week today. It is posted on our website under Math Resources. We'll work on that next week, then introduce another problem. The Terry Fox run is tomorrow, beginning with an assembly at 8:45am. All are welcome! See you tomorrow! Riddle of the night (FOR Parents!): This one is from our read-aloud book: What is not enough for one, just right for two, and too much for three? (Ask your child for the answer)
We began the day by looking at different attributes and characteristics of balls, then sorting them. We did an excellent job at looking closely at each ball, as some of them were difficult to tell apart. We'll be doing more of these types of problems. Today we also started looking at the different functions of the brain, which will help up to better understand how we learn. Today's areas were: amygdala, Pre-Frontal Cortex, and Hippocampus. The website for Fun Lunch ordering is now up and working. Please see the form attached to Friday's blog entry for more information, if interested. Bye for now. Reminders:
Question of the night: Finish this sentence - The most important thing about me is...
We continued to work on Book Clubs this morning. We're close to starting the independent reading aspect of the clubs: students have been assigned books that relate to Waste and Our World, and will have to complete different tasks geared towards building their higher thinking skills. Today we looked at the similarities between the location of Fort Edmonton and Fort Calgary, and related that to the needs of settlers. We watched the video "Soddie" on our class website. Our first attempt at logging into "Duolingo", our language learning app was a huge success. Only a few of us were unable to log in, which we'll fix tomorrow. We use our CBE email accounts, which makes it very secure, plus Mr. V can track our progress online.
We continued to talk about Calgary today, and watched the second video from a series by the Calgary Planning Commission. We began to explore the needs of a community, and perhaps why Fort Calgary was established at its chosen location. We'll continue along this topic over the coming weeks. Hello All! What a fast-paced Friday, starting with Boot Camp this morning. Mrs. Bezugley and Ms. Manser were so impressed with the effort from the grade 4s this morning. It really showed, as they were very tired after Camp! We finished talking about story starters this morning, using Google Streetview as our catalyst. We'll begin getting our thoughts on paper soon! Please continue to post comments on this blog - it's great to hear your thoughts. Yesterday's question was about your "coolest" place on Earth. The website for Fun Lunch ordering is now up and working. Please see the form attached to this blog entry for more information, if interested. Have a great weekend! Reminders:
