Question of the night: Go to Google maps and find your coolest spot on the planet, other than your house! (Please do not post your address - remember our chat about being safe.)
Another full day of learning. We started the morning by reflecting on our "multiple Intelligences". Please ask you child what these are, and what were their strengths. We unfortunately did not have time for our Book Club today, but we will talk about insightful reader responses tomorrow. We talked about them a little today during our questioning of "Leon's Song". In math, we worked on our carpet grid, looking for patterns within the number system. We'll continue with this work for the next few months! Out first fire drill was this afternoon - the students did extremely well. This afternoon we used google maps and streetview to come up with some story starters. We looked at our houses, then came up with a story about the scene. See you tomorrow. Reminders:
Question of the night: If you could plan a field trip, where would it be and what would we learn? Please comment!
"We watched a video about Calgary. We learned about Calgary's history" -- EB "We read Leon's Song and we came up with ideas about asking good questions." -- SF "We talked about the Fibonacci pattern." --CG "We got books from the library." --KM "We played outside." -- EB "We went outside today for gym and I did back bridges and failed on my face." -- BS "We worked on finishing our art." -- EB Forms about the Terry Fox Run went home today. Please let me know if you did not receive your copies. The Run is scheduled for next Friday, September 18th. We continued to talk about patterns in math today. Patterns are a huge part of math, and we will spend most of the first 4 months of school on this part of math. Tomorrow, we begin using Duolingo - Ask your child what this program entails... Bye for now! A few comments from the Grade 4s:
"Our game of kick ball was fun" -- BV "I was playing a game in the science section of our website. It was fun." -- HE "I played a game that had bumper cars and reflections." -- TN "We started book clubs today. We started reading "Owen and Mzee." -- EB "In math, on the calculator we figured what our names are worth and TS was the most at 106!" -- SF "We learned about fire drills and lockdowns." -- BS Hello! A few forms went home today. I have 3 left in my hands as I type this, so if you did not receive a calendar and a volunteer form, please let me know. We briefly started book clubs today. Our first book club will be about the environment to coincide with our first science unit, Waste and Our World. The first week is in the books...
We had our first Independent Work Period of the year today. We talked about our priorities and goals at this time, then independently worked to meet those goals. We'll have these types of periods throughout the year. We started talking a little about math today, especially patterns. Today's problem was "Mr Veronese = 134". We had to figure out what rule or pattern I used to make this statement. If you figure out the rule, here's another challenge: pick any number, then figure out words that equal that number. (This is not easy!) Finally, we forgot to take home the school calendar and volunteer sheets today - we'll get to those on Tuesday. Please remember that there is no school on Monday. Enjoy the long weekend. Bye for now! Wow, another fun-filled day. We worked through a few more things to get to know each other. Mr. Veronese wrote us a letter and we had to write one back. We also completed an online survey that gave us a snapshot into how we learn. We'll be reflecting on that tomorrow. At the end of the day, we briefly looked at our class website. you can find a link to it from the POW website, and it's full of great links for learning. Please return forms that were sent home ASAP, including the SUTP books if you're not interested in purchasing them. Attached below is the grade 4 curriculum at a glance - we used that today as a tool to help us write our letters. Have a great night! Day #2 is in the books. And what a day it was! We began by reading the "Important Book", then brainstorming and writing our important book page. We're not quite finished yet, but we're getting there.
We also worked on a learning profile which Mr. Veronese can use to know all about us as learners. We'll be doing a couple more of these over the next couple of weeks. In the afternoon we worked through a school-wide scavenger hunt. One of the questions involved 2-footted hops from the front door to the Gym. Ask us about how many it took! Many notices went home today:
See you tomorrow! First day was a good start to the school year.
We started by getting out binders and duotangs ready. We played a fun game called "SCOOT" where you have cards to read then do what the card wants you to do. For example, freeze like a statue in a silly position until the teacher says "Scoot"! We also looked at art and talked about what we think art is. Finally, we talked about some classroom expectations for this year. We think that our class is a place where:
