Question of the night: No question this weekend, but a challenge. Say something kind to at least 3 people this weekend.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Also, if you are able to volunteer, we are looking for a few parents to come on a Fall walk with us on Tuesday, October 3rd, in the afternoon. Please send me a note if you'd like to come on a walk. Welcome MB to our learning community! We're super excited you joined us... Thank you for the grade 3s for leading our Orange Shirt Day assembly. We had a circle afterwards, and while most students said they felt "sad", some students said they were "Optimistic" that we wouldn't treat each other this way anymore. We continued to watch a bit of our Friday Flick called "Earth From Space." One interesting part was that all the water on earth is connected to Antarctica...yes, ALL the water! We finished the day with Ticket to Curlew, then a bit of Earned Time. Have a great weekend. Be kind to one another. ____________________________________________________ A Message from Mr. Delday's Grade 6 class Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization with the goal of ensuring that every child from Kindergarten to Grade 12 has a warm winter coat to wear to school. 90% of donations come from schools. The jackets are then distributed to children in schools where there is a need. This year we are inviting our students and parents to participate in a coat drive for Jacket Racket. They accept gently used warm winter coats, snow pants, hats and mittens for all ages. Question of the night: What is a proper noun? Write as may proper nouns as you can that start with "C".
We began the day with a question about drawing a triangle that has sides exactly equal to 3cm, 4cm, and 5cm. We figured out that this is a very famous triangle, and that it has to have a "corner" or 90 degree angle in it. It was fun to see everyone attempting this question. We watched a short video on nouns again today...in fact, it's called "Noun Town". There is alot of information in the video, so we focused mostly on the difference between proper and common nouns. Here's the video: Noun town and a few exercises to try: IXL and Quiz. We continued to talk about Orange shirt day today. We read a story about losing your language. In "Stolen Words", the main character's grandfather lost his cree language during the residential schools era. Students have been super interested in this part of our history, and have shown great empathy. We spent some time with Ms. Ferrari learning watercolour techniques, which we'll bring into our class for art. We saved the best for last. We started a new typing website today called typing club. This is definitely the most challenging and best tool to teach typing skills. We have a classroom account setup, and all students have a username associated with this website. Here's the link: Typing Club. The link is also on our class website in Language Arts resources. Try it our at home - it's super fun. If you, parents, want me to add you to our class, please let me know. I can create an account for you... Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ A Message from Mr. Delday's Grade 6 class Jacket Racket is a volunteer organization with the goal of ensuring that every child from Kindergarten to Grade 12 has a warm winter coat to wear to school. 90% of donations come from schools. Question of the night: Come up with as many nouns as possible that start with the letter "N".
Noun town continued in our classroom today. We began by reading "A Mink, A fink, A Skating Rink", and attempted to write down all the nouns in the book. There were probably close to 100 nouns!! We're getting a bit tripped up on the "thing" part of nouns. Some of us are confusing the "thing" in nouns with "something we do", as in verbs or action words. We'll continue tomorrow. In math today, we made the giant leap from using "units" to using centimetres or metres or inches or anything else. Now that we've done that, we can more easily move to area. In the afternoon, we talked about Orange shirt Day, which is a day to remember the survivors of residential schools. It's a pretty heavy topic, so there might be some discussion at home. We read the book "When I was 8", and watched a video about the history of Residential Schools: Every Child Matters. We'll read a few more stories, watch a few more videos, and have some more conversations this week about this important topic. Question of the night: what are soft and hard c's, and can you think of some words for each type of "c"?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Also, if you are able to volunteer, we are looking for a few parents to come on a Fall walk with us on Tuesday, October 3rd, in the afternoon. Please send me a note if you'd like to come on a walk. Welcome back! we got right into grammar this morning by studying nouns. This week, our class will called "Noun Town"! we'll be looking at proper and common nouns tomorrow. Our spelling rule of the week deals with hard and soft c and g. Here's a way to easily remember the rule..."i, y, and e soften c and g". Our word list follows: chance, since, courage, control, giant, garbage, once, science, practice, guide, magnet, charge, message, general, and recently. in math, we continue to work on measurement, specifically perimeter. We're moving from using "units" as measurements to common measurements, e.g. cm, m, mm, km, etc. In the afternoon, we pointed out one of Mr. V's many handwriting mistakes...his writing of "f". Now that we're all on the same page, their will be no more confusion...try out an "F" at home with your child. Finally, we conducted our first science experiment of the year. Actually, it's an ongoing experiment, so we'll be observing it over the next few weeks. It's about mold!! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What is the first word that comes to your mind when you hear the word "waste"?
Wow, Parent-Teacher conferences tonight, already. Please make sure to come by to chat. If you're unable to book a time for the next two days, please be in contact with me to arrange another time. Today, we once again journaled with Ms. Gray at our special (inside) spot. We complete a soundscape, trying to capture all of the sounds we hear at our special spot. It's so interesting to hear the sounds when you sit and listen. We viewed the bookfair today. First, we walked through it alone, then we led our kindergarten buddies around. We're, once again, such great leaders. We earned some time this afternoon, but not until we talked about garbage, and the amount that an average person "makes". We even saw a real-life example of excessive packaging... We'll continue it all next week! Be safe. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! Question of the night: What is different about handwriting a lowercase "b"?
Hello! Wow, this week is just flying, and we've got so much accomplished. We continue to work hard in our writing, every morning. We're still working on writing mechanics, rather than content building. Fishing letters...those letters that go under the line...we're working on those. In math, we're still plugging through some measurement work, making sure that the meaning of perimeter is stuck in our brains. We're still working with "units", but we're soon moving into standard measurements, i.e. cm, m, etc. We'll be diving deeper into measurement next week when we talk about area. In the afternoon, we had music with mrs. Dennill, then worked super hard on our handwritten "b". Check the question of the night... We started talking about waste this afternoon, by brainstorming words that we think about when we hear "waste". We also watched a video about Edmonton's composting facility. Here it is: Composting in Edmonton. Sorry, I forgot to send home forms about the milk program and fees. We'll get those to you tomorrow. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! Question of the night: What are "fishing" letters?
We welcomed a new student today, JM. We're such an inviting group of people! This morning, we read 3/4 of "Fish is Fish", then were tasked with completing the story. It was super interesting to hear some of our ideas. Our LA goals this week are "fishing" letters: f, g, j, p, q, y. We'll be practising these all this week, which will make our printing (and handwriting) much more neat. We continued to work on perimeter, but we'll be quickly moving into area. We focused on identifying a "unit", then made different shapes and calculated their perimeters. In the afternoon, we learned "j" in cursive, then finished off our video of Calgary's past. It was a great exercise to compare and contrast the Calgary of 1965 to the Calgary of now! This week's spelling rule is Consonant clusters: three consonants in sequence and you can hear ALL three sounds (e.g. scr, spl, spr, mbl, mpl and ndl) or just two sounds (e.g. nch, nth, rch, chr, shr, and thr). Our spelling words for this week are the following: struggle, crumble, month, sample, scream, straight, strange, thrilling, splash, throat, branch, spring. A couple forms went home re: Terry Fox Run. Please have a quick look in your child's backpack. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! Question of the night: What do you remember most about this week?
TGIF! What an exciting morning. We started the day with Phys Ed, then settled right into our first circle of the year. Our circle time is when we take the time to listen to each other, knowing that we all have time to share, as well as a safe place to share it. We'll have a circle at least once a week. We finished off our discussion of consonant blends this week by classifying each blend into categories. We're going to try to come up with some patterns next week. We also worked with old books and "blacked out" all words, save for all of the consonant blends. This morning, we watched part of our first "Friday Flick". This week's episode is called, "Earth From Space", and it's about the powerful earth forces that interact within our planet. Here's a link, if you're interested: Earth From Space. We finished the day by meeting our kindie buddies - we are such great role models! Have a great weekend.. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! Question of the night: Measure the perimeter around at least 3 things in your house.
Picture day! We all put on our beautiful smiles. This morning, we continued to work on our consonant blends, which we'll wrap-up tomorrow. We again spent some time with Ms. Gray journalling, which we focused on asking questions. We continued to work on measuring perimeters, and we moved from measuring physical objects to working on chart paper and measuring shapes like mathematicians. In the afternoon, we learned to handwrite the letter "l", went to the library for our first visit with Mrs. Cornford, then finished the day with Pe. Don't forget about our 40th Anniversary tonight from 6-8pm. COme if you can! Scholastic book orders are due this Friday, if you're interested in ordering books. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! Question of the night: Think of as many words as you can that have three or more syllables...
Wow, where did the sun go? We were lucky enough today to make it outside in between the rain. I wonder if we'll be so fortunate tomorrow. This seems like a good time to talk about dressing appropriately for the weather. Our picture book for this morning was called, "One of Us". Make sure to ask your child about this book, and how it relates to their lives. Our writing has been super engaging this week! In our spelling time, we continued to work on consonant blends, focusing on syllables today. Check the question of the night for a tough challenge. Being able to accurately identify syllables helps us in our spelling by slowing us down. Also, we know that a syllable needs a vowel, so that information is useful while spelling, as well. Tomorrow, we'll be sorting the blends into categories and seeing if we can find a pattern. We also continued to work on perimeter and measurement this morning. We looked at measuring objects that are round, rather than straight, and how string may be a useful tool for that task. Tomorrow we move into measuring shapes while using grid paper. In the afternoon, our work focused on Calgary - past & present. We watched about half of a movie made in 1955 to promote Calgary tourism. We used a venn diagram to compare and contrast Calgary's features. We'll follow up with it tomorrow. Scholastic book orders are due this Friday, if you're interested in ordering books. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons!
