Question of the night: HOW MANY SYLLABLES DOES YOUR FIRST NAME HAVE, AND HOW DO YOU KNOW?
Hello! What a productive day! In the morning, we began the day by reading "The Sound of Colors". This is a book full of symbolism about a young girl that loses her sight. She uses her imagination to take her to far off places, while she searches for something... We also continued our work on consonant blends by talking about syllables in words. Did you know that every syllable in a word must have a vowel. Knowing that really helps us spell! We'll continue to talk about this tomorrow. After recess, we spent an hour with Ms. Ferrari, our resident ART EXPERT. WE WORKED ON SOME ABSTRACT ART TECHNIQUES AND COLOUR WHEELS. IT WAS SUPER FUN! OUR AFTERNOON WAS PRETTY GREAT, TOO: HANDWRITING, TICKET TO CURLEW, AND MATH...OH, AND LET'S NOT FORGET GYM AT THE END OF THE DAY. Scholastic book orders are due this Friday, if you're interested in ordering books. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! We will be hosting a Scholastic book fair September 21&22 during Meet the Teacher. Students will have an opportunity to view the books during the week. Notices and flyers will be coming home soon. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Think of at least one consonant blend word we did not talk about in class today.
Another hot day today! We're getting really spoiled by this hot weather...I wonder how much we'll complain when it's finally gone. We began the day with a journal prompt from the book "So Many Days". We wondered why the author wrote this book, and what lessons can be learned from it. We are amazing and thoughtful writers. We also had our first spelling lesson of the year. We'll be working weekly on spelling "rules", with the first today being consonant blends. Every monday on the blog, we will post a new rule and some words that you can use as practice at home. Consonant Blends occur when two (or more) consonants together in sequence AND you can hear the sounds of each consonant. For example, "Stood". When you say "Stood", you can hear both the "s" sound AND the "T" sound, so "ST" is a consonant blend. Here is a word list for you to practice: clock, front, against, spend, track, grandfather, complete, stood, across, flight, problem, standing. Feel free to add to this list as you see fit. In the afternoon, we began working on our handwriting. We learned, or re-learned, the letter "i". Then, we used our books to find "I" words to practice. Finally, we finished the day with our "I Am" Art. Most are Done. Scholastic book orders are due this Friday, if you're interested in ordering books. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Great books for sale in the Learning Commons! Question of the night: Tell us at least one picture you glued on your "I am" head...
A very artistic day! This morning, we explored our class website for the first time this year. There is so much to learn from this site, so please keep coming back to check it out! We began work on our "I AM" art. Basically, we are challenged with representing ourselves through pictures. We'll continue to work on it next week, then it will be up for everyone to enjoy... Please know that Scholastic Book orders went home this week. Have a look, and let me know if you'd like to order some books. Have a great Weekend! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What has been your favourite new game at school?
Another great day in Grade 4! We began the day by spending some time with Ms. Gray. She helped us find our special Spot in the schoolyard, then we worked on our first journalling technique. We used our sense today to investigate our spot. The rest of the day was mostly spent on pre-assessments. We worked on checking our spelling and math today. Once those have been assessed, we'll have more information about our learning goals. Form packages have gone home. Please have a look at the forms and return them ASAP. Have a great night. Have a good sleep...we'll do it again tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Find your house on google maps. Can you measure the distance from your house to Prince of Wales School?
Day 2 is in the books! We started the day with a bit of a written reflection on our first day of grade 4. We also drew a picture to go along with our writing. We read an interesting short story about a Kingdom without any laws or rules, which led us into a great discussion about our personal expectations for this year. We landed on the following: I Respect Myself, I respect Others, and I respect my environment. It seems that all of our "Don't" rules fall into one of those statements. After recess, we worked on some more measurement. This time, we investigated the classroom for objects between 30 and 90 cms. (I wonder why we chose those numbers???) Oh, and let's not forget our dive into Alberta this afternoon. We did some preliminary research on what we already know about Alberta. Here's a short list of keywords: Treaty 7, Dinosaurs, A beach, Edmonton, Fish Creek Provincial park, Oil, Peace Bridge, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump...We'll have so much fun studying these, and other, topics this year. Form packages have gone home. Please have a look at the forms and return them ASAP. Have a great night. Have a good sleep...we'll do it again tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What was your most memorable moment from summer?
Wow, welcome back! we had an amazing day back from summer holidays. We started our day with some writing about the picture book, "Larf". We studied the author's purpose, as well as the main character's traits. This was our chance to show off our writing. After our initial writing piece, we went outside to walk the boundaries of our field. We also explored the new games painted on the compound, starting with 4-Squares. Before lunch we got our binders & supplies organized, then worked on some Art. We'll continue with art tomorrow. The afternoon flew by! We started with an Independent Work Period (IWP), starting with some personal inventories about ourselves. We ended the day with some math by finding as many things around the classroom that are between 10 & 30 cms. We focused on proving our conclusions. Form packages went home today. Please have a look at the forms and return them ASAP. Have a great night. Have a good sleep...we'll do it again tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
