Question of the night: Explain multiplication squares to your parents.
Wow, April has almost come and gone. We've been really hitting our learning stride. This morning, we spent some time again practicing our basic multiplication facts. We've learned what multiplication means (ie. an area), and now we're getting more proficient at our 5x5 (grade 3s) or 7x7 (grade 4) facts. Today we also played a game called "Multiplication squares", which is an excellent way to practice our facts up to 6x6. The game and instructions are attached here. Try it - you'll love it! In the afternoon, we once again worked on our minecraft city. We are working closely together to solve some common problems that cities face: where is power coming from? how are people going to get around? What are people going to do for fun? Where are people going to live? We began our building today by reflecting on the questions: "How is my building project making v-ville better?" How is my building making the people of v-ville better off?" We're excited to continue! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Please join us for our special "Music Monday Celebration" assembly on May 1st at 1:00 pm in the gym. Question of the night: What is your favourite type of skipping?
Hi All! We started today with some basic facts multiplication practice in the form of math games. We'll be working on getting these facts into our memory recall, so that they come to us very quickly. This morning, we spent most of the time on our science crate centres. This crate is about hearing and sound, and we explored many different types of sound and vibrations. This re-enforced much of our learning from our earlier "senses" unit. We're very close to moving into our last science unit: Plant & animal lifecycles. In the afternoon, we had some quality reading and interacting time with our kindie buddies. We're such great role models! After that, we continue with our city project, code named "v-ville". We started with a class conversation about what each of us are currently building, as well as what we're building next. Our subway and parks systems are looking great, not to mention our housing and government buildings! HAve a safe night! ____________________________________________________ Please join us for our special "Music Monday Celebration" assembly on May 1st at 1:00 pm in the gym. Question of the night: How was Power Hour?
Hi All! We began the day with a circle, where we discussed the ups and downs of working within a committee. Of course, we've been working in committees during our v-ville construction, and today's conversation led us to some interesting discoveries. I wonder if this is like what happens in the committees at city hall in Calgary? After music, we went right into our book clubs. Most of us are getting right into our books, with some posting their comments on D2L. We continue tomorrow. For math, we worked on our number facts, which we'll continue for pretty much the rest of the year. We worked on completing our own multiplication tables, with the 3s focusing up to 5x5 and the 4s up to 7x7. In the afternoon, we worked with "kenKen" puzzles. These puzzles are meant to strengthen our basic facts, as well as our mathematical reasoning. We'll work with these lots over the next month or so. We also had Power Hour in the afternoon. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What is happening in your book club book?
Hello! What an incredible day. We began the day by talking about the theme of this week: Canada! We talked about the "3 things for Canada" initiative, and how "things" does not mean money...it can also mean service. We talked about how service is something we have within us, like time or kindness, it's not a "thing". We had our first book club session of this week. Only two weeks left after this week. The rest of the morning was spent on math. We continue to study the terms factors, product, and commutative property. We worked with cusinaire rods to build arrays. We're going to be practising our basic facts for the rest of the year: grade 3s need to know up to 5x5, and the 4s need to know up to 7x7. We'll together build some multiplication tables. In the afternoon, we had an assembly led by the grade 2s, then we worked on v-ville. We're starting to have some problems with space, which the transportation group is concerned with. We'll talk about that tomorrow, and work on a solution on Wednesday, since it's Power Hour tomorrow. Have a good night!
Question of the night: Describe your building in V-Ville.
Wow, a day full of building. We began the day by debriefing in our minecraft committees. We had to make some decisions before our building period today, like where to build schools, roads, parks, libraries. We spent some time debating this morning. We continued to study Alberta's fossil heritage this morning. We watched episode 2 of "Dino Trails", which focused on the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the Badlands. The rest of the morning was spent with Mrs. Dennill. We worked on Pundles, then had some time skipping in the gym. Have a great weekend. Be safe. ____________________________________________________ Red & White Day Red & White day is scheduled for Monday, April 24.
Question of the night: What do you think is missing from v-ville?
We began the day with music, where we're really getting great at our recorders. Some of us tested, while others practiced. Mrs. Dennill tested some of us at lunch, too. Our new topic of study in social will be fossils, which links to both Alberta and other parts of the world, not to mention rocks and minerals. We watched a heritage minute on Joseph Tyrrell (Here it is). In the video, they mention that he discovered what would become one of the richest dinosaur deposits in the world. This discussion led us to a mini-series about Alberta's fossil heritage: we watched episode 1 today, which showcased Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta. Over the next few weeks, we're going to focus on Alberta's fossils, why they are important to our identity, and why they are important to better understand. After recess, we worked on math, where we continued to talk about multiplication and division. We built arrays, defined the words "factors" and "product", then proved the commuttative product...wow, that was alot. We'll continue to work on all of these concepts, plus our mental math skills, next week. In the afternoon, we were so focused on our minecraft city. Our committee groups have been great about meeting with each other and asking for the needs they may have. For example, many people have asked the transportation committee for roads and bridges to be built to their particular building. We'll continue tomorrow, but we'll have to make some decisions about where schools, libraries, and firestations are going to be built. At the request of some students, (optional) pajama day is scheduled for Friday... Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Red & White Day Red & White day is scheduled for Monday, April 24.
Question of the night: What is your committee in minecraft, and what are you in charge of building?
Wow, we're really hitting our learning stride. We started the day by practising some of our number facts using number rumble. During this time, Mr V usually works one-on-one with students to master some concepts. Before Book Club, we watched a video on Frank Slide. Two of our books are based around this topic, and by watching the video, we get a better understanding of the events that took place. As for book club, we're really working hard on making sure to understand our reading, so that we can make very informed posts on D2L. After recess, we worked on math, where we started to talk about multiplication and division. We built arrays using cuisinaire rods, then defined the factors of our array. We'll quickly move on to the commuttative property of multiplication, eg. 3 x 2 = 2 x 3. We'll prove that is true! In the afternoon, we were so focused on our minecraft city. We began by meeting in our committee groups to discuss our priorities. Then, the government Committee decided on where to build city hall, which marked our downtown. From there, our committees worked on building our city. It's really taking shape... At the request of some students, (optional) pajama day is scheduled for Friday... Have a great night!
Question of the night: How was power hour?
Hello! Welcome back. Today was a day of preparation, as we prepare to build our minecraft city. We were asked to work in our committees this afternoon to talk about our priorities, and where we will build our structures. We got a first glance at "V-Ville", which is waht our city is called. In the morning, we finished off subtraction by doing a bit of a test on binary code. Tomorrow we start working on Multiplication and division, all together, since they are really related concepts. Always remember that you can access many teaching links on our class website, especially dealing with mental math and the 4 operations ( +, -, x, division). We also had a session of book club this morning, which will be our routine for the next 4 weeks. Oh, and of course, power hour #3 started today. Have a great night.
Question of the night: What committee are you working on for our minecraft city?
Hello All! We had a great day of learning. We began the day with music, where we practiced recorders and sang our music monday song. The song is linked in D2L, so feel free to practice at home, if you like. We then had our second book club session of the week, where some of us started working on our weekly roles. Others weren't quite there yet, which is ok - we'll just pick it up next week. After recess, some of us finished our shadow art projects with Mrs. Blanchard, while others worked a little bit on binary code using subtraction. In the afternoon, we had an Independent work period, or IWP, where students needed to prioritize their time to make sure their jobs were done. We finished the day with a talk about our minecraft city, which is now named "V-Ville". We begin building on Wednesday next week, after we finalize our building priorities. Please don't forget student-led conferences on Monday. We're very excited to show you our learning. Have a great long weekend.
Question of the night: What do you think is the most important thing that our minecraft city should have?
Hello! What a day! We started the day with our science centres. Unfortunately, that was our last time with the crate, but we learned lots about pulleys, levers, and gears. We have a hearing and sound crate in a few weeks, then we're diving right into lifecycles... In the morning, we also talked about subtraction, which we'll use tomorrow with our binary code challenge. We also began our book clubs this morning - they'll run for 5 weeks, with ongoing roles and discussions in D2L. In the afternoon, we read "secret", played some number rumble, and began talking about our minecraft project. Since we;ve been studying cities in Alberta, Tunisia, Ukraine, Peru, and India, we're going to be starting our city from scratch. Today we talked about what cities have in common (eg. housing, roads, water source, schools, etc...), and tomorrow we'll divide ourselves into committees that will take care of different aspects of a city. Then, next week, we begin building. Have a good night! ____________________________________________________ Communities helping Communities Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. As we explored ways of life in the Arctic, we were shocked to learn that a fire had devastated the community school in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. Not just a center for education, the school served as the community center with the arena, breakfast and lunch program, and special events. Grade 2’s at Prince of Wales have banded together, and following the design thinking process, explored how to best support this community. To support Kugaaruk School, Grade 2’s will host Intermural Floor Hockey in the gym from April 10th- April 20th from 12:00-12:30PM and welcome all donations (suggested donation is $2). Ms. Konno will be creating heartfelt cards with students in Room 9. The Grade 2’s also welcome cash donations in support of the community of Kugaaruk. Cash donations will be accepted from April 3rd to April 21st. Please see below for your Grade Schedule. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].
