Question of the night: What were you attempting to do during our "Circus" time in the gym? Whoa, what a day! We started the day by studying a problem of motion. We had Mr. K, our expert engineer, come in today to talk to us about electromagnets. We then used some of that knowledge to try our hand at building an electric motor. It was frustrating, and sometimes exciting. We'll keep talking about this throughout the next could of weeks. We also had another art session with Ms. Ferrari before lunch. After lunch, we got together with the grade 2s and started to practice one of our song for the spring concert. Here is a link to the karaoke version of it. Mrs. Hewitt changed some of the words, so I've attached those at the bottom of this post, too. After that, we worked on a couple of base 10 block puzzles. We're still working on getting comfortable at exchanging between places. We're getting ready to move on! Please don't forget our Telus Spark field trip tomorrow... ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Try out the brainstorming we did this morning with your parents. The prompt is at the bottom of this post.
Welcome Back! We began the day by spending some time with descriptive writing. We'll continue to work on this skill, which is not just about using adjectives or juicy words. Descriptive writing is much more than simply using adjectives. In the morning, we also worked on another brainstorming technique, which involved using our senses: in our case, we used hearing, taste, smell and feel. The prompt is at the bottom of this post. In the afternoon, we learned uppercase "n", then focused on using base 10 blocks to represent numbers. we started with some super quick pre-assessments, then moved into some more challenging areas of representing numbers. Our next step is using base 10 blocks to order and compare numbers. That's it for now. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Please post some numbers that have a "6" in the thousands place. Oh, the number must also be even...
Hi! Mr. V was not in the classroom today...he had meetings all day! This morning, we continued to work on concepts, and specifically focused on expanding numbers into their values. We also spent some time exploring some math and social links on our class website. In the morning, we also had an art lesson with Mrs. Ferrari. The afternoon flew by...we started with music with Mrs. Dennill, then went to see Mrs. Cornford in the library. We finished the day with a visit from our grade 2 buddies, then mission impossible in the gym. It's the last day of Mission Impossible tomorrow... Don't forget our telus SPark field trip on Wednesday, January 31st. ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Please rewrite the following sentence with a vivid verb: "While I walked through the forest, a mouse jumped out of the grass!"
Hello! We started our day with another conversation about using vivid verbs. We read the book, "To Root, to Toot, to Parachute", and made webs for these commonly used verbs: said, go, throw, fall, eat, and run. We also completed an interactive language arts page in our book so we have a "bank" of verbs available. In the morning, we also got together with our grade 4 mates from Ms. Mosher's class to brainstorm possible stories from picture prompts. This work will lead us to the formation of our own stories. In the afternoon, we read another chapter from "Owls in the Family", then talked about place value using base 10 blocks. We'll be moving into ordering numbers over the next few days. Please return your Telus Spark forms ASAP. Our trip is on January 31st. Question of the night: Take a look at the picture prompt at the bottom of this post, and ask an adult to come up with a short story from the picture.
Wowza! Monday has come and gone. This morning, we had a little drama class. We read the story "Crickwing", and had groups of students act out some of the amazing verbs used by the author. We are now building our word bank before we start writing stories. Tomorrow we will talk again about verbs, then we'll move into elaborative detail. This morning, we also worked on spelling. We're currently working on "er" sounds, and we've figured out that there are many ways to make that sound in the english language. We're practicing some of those common ways. Here are some words to work on this week: early, learned, journey, concerned, perhaps, heard, energy, modern, whether, earth, average, character, world, curve, purpose, disturb, third. Notice how all of these words have an "er" sound, but are not all spelled with an "ER". We continued to work w=on place value in math, with us really focusing on being able to break numbers apart. We started to work a little bit with base 10 blocks today, and we'll continue tomorrow. In the afternoon, we had a great conversation about Alberta's regions, then we talked about making stories from picture prompts. The prompt is attached at the bottom of this post. Please have a look. Please return your Telus Spark forms ASAP. Our trip is on January 31st. Question of the night: Please remember your homework this weekend, if you did not finish your alberta region research in class.
What a super fun day! We presented our gymnastics routines in gym this morning. We obviously worked super hard rehearsing and "polishing" them. They were great to watch! This morning, we also were asked to help the morning kindie class with their introduction interviews in IRIS. We're such great leaders, which is why Ms. O asks us for our help. We worked a little on the technique of Overlapping for our 3d drawings, then played a bit of guess my number in math. We ended the day with some earned time. Question of the night: Please name the regions in Alberta to where you have actually visited? I'll give you a heads-up...we've all been to the grasslands since we live in Calgary!!
Another Thursday, another great day of learning. We continued to work on trying to avoid snoozerama words. We focused on dead verbs today. And yes, a moment of silence was held in class today for our "dead" verb friends. This morning, we also worked on place value and our multiplication practice. We are finally hooked in our math learning, and all it took was to talk about money. We'll talk more next week. There is no secret word today, but you MUST comment if you want 2 super student tickets. In the afternoon, we had another research period, where we continued to look at Alberta's physical regions. We have another, short period tomorrow. We'll see if we need another one, or if it's homework after that. Please return your Telus Spark forms ASAP. Our trip is on January 31st. Question of the night: Which region (or regions) of Alberta did you study today? Also, tell us (at least) 2 interesting findings from your research.
Hello! What a productive day! We began the day by, once again, talking about avoiding snoozzerrama words in our writing. This time, we focused on verbs. We played a few charades to create webs of snoozer and vivid verbs. We're going to be holding another funeral tomorrow...this time specifically for dead verbs. It will be a sad day, but we'll be ok. In the morning, we also spent another research period on our Alberta research. We've been really focusing on the landscape of each region, as well as the vegetation and animals life. We will talk more in-depth about its natural resources and bodies of water over the next few research periods. This morning, we also learned our upper case "A" in handwriting, which looks suspiciously like a lower case "a"... And, of course, we practiced our basic facts again. This time, we used our multiplication squares game as our practice tool. The afternoon flew by: we went to music, then to the library, then met up with our grade 2 buddies for a super quick visit...we'll see them again next week. Please don't forget to whisper "Fjord" to Mr. V tomorrow for 3 super student tickets. Do you remember how that word is pronounced? Please return your Telus Spark forms ASAP. Question of the night: No question...but if you whisper "Boreal Forest" to Mr. V tomorrow morning you'll get 3 super students!
Hello! What a day! We had a sad start to the morning, as we had to say goodbye to some of our "dead" words: words that we have vowed not to use in our narrative and poetry writing. Words like "said, walk, run, see" were laid to rest to rest this morning at 9:00am. Don't worry though, we know that, sometimes, we really need to use them, so they can be resurrected, if need be. After recess, we worked on some math, where we quickly practiced our basic facts (again!), then moved into expanded notation. We even talked a little bit about written notation. We'll continue tomorrow. In the afternoon, after handwriting and a practice lockdown, we had only a few minutes to look at our Alberta Research. We're acting as junior explorers and surveyors...even though we can't physically go to all 6 regions. We'll go there remotely instead, by mostly using the following site: Zooming in! We'll continue our research this week and next. Please return your Telus Spark forms ASAP. Our trip is on January 31st. Question of the night: Without using google maps or anything other maps, label as many places you can on the Alberta map attached to this post.
Hello! Today, we began the day with a spelling check...we wanted to see if the rules of spelling we're studying are helping. After that, we talked about our new writing style: narrative, or story, writing. We laid some ground rules for our stories, especially about violence. This week and next, we'll work on laying some of the foundation for our best writing. In math, we continued to work on place value, then did a quick assessment of our number sense. It was super quick, and we looked at some basic understanding of place value. Tomorrow, we'll move into expanded notation. Remember, in grade 4, we need to know our numbers up to 10,000. In the afternoon, we began to look at the landscape of Alberta, and specifically focused on our own knowledge of alberta's cities, towns, famous places, attractions, etc. We had to work together to, or try to, fill in as much of a blank map of Alberta as possible. One is attached to this post, which you can try to do with your parents. Remember, no google maps! Field trip forms for Telus Spark have gone home. Please return them, signed, ASAP.
