Oh, what a leapin' goo day. Question of the night: why do we have leap years?
We'll be setting up our book clubs later this week - we read the back covers of the books this morning so that we can make an informed decision when choosing our books. We worked on helping Mr. V choose his car again today. Today was all about leasing, or renting...Later in the week, we have to offer Mr. V some advice about his car. Please bring in a cereal box for an art project. We need the boxes for next week, preferably by Thursday. Ms. Covic is leading this project. Have a great weekend... __________________________________________________ The Parkland Community Association will be hosting a Winterfest Celebration this Saturday, February 27th from 12-2PM. Bring the whole family down for some great activities including mini golf, petting zoo, crafts, games, and face painting. This is a free event that is being offered by the Parkland Community Association, and you do not have to be a Parkland resident to attend! While you’re there, come in and register your child for U6-U12 soccer. We will also be accepting non-perishable items for the local food bank. FYI - Soccer is also open to nonresidents of Parkland. http://www.parklandcommunityassociation.org/contact-us.html This link is to the website, but I don’t think it has info about Winterfest, so I just included the PCA address and contact info… Hope to see you there! We're getting close to the end of our read aloud, "the Name of this Book is Secret." It has been an interesting read! We'll take a poll on whether we want to continue with the series.
We watched another part of our UNESCO Heritage Sites video. Today was focused on the Canadian Rockies, namely Banff and Jasper National parks. Another Friday, another Power Hour. It's amazing to see all of our interests and creativity coming to life!! Please bring in a cereal box for an art project. We need the boxes for next week, preferably by Thursday. Hi! We had some time this morning to help Mr. Veronese with his car buying decision. We're working on figuring out how much his monthly payments would be on his new car. From that, we're going to advise him on what's the the best deal. We'll continue tomorrow, if there's time.
In the afternoon, we continue to work on mindstorm programming. We have some groups that have made it their mission to use all of the sensors available, then teach our learning community how to use them in their programming. We have a few more days to build and program. Notices about Clay for Kids went home today. __________________________________________________ The Parkland Community Association will be hosting a Winterfest Celebration this Saturday, February 27th from 12-2PM. Wow, what a busy day. We continued to discuss the question of who should own the fossils in Alberta? We watched a program call "Our Place in the World", which showcases Canada's 15 UNESCO heritage sites. We watched the episode on Dinosaur Provincial Park.
In the afternoon, we continued to program our lego mindstorms. Today was the day to see if we could program the robots to accomplish a task designed by our classmates. Tomorrow the roles are reversed, so if you were a designer, you are now the builder/programmer. Wednesday is Pink Shirt Day! We encourage everyone to openly express that “Kindness is one size fits all”. We all have the capacity to spread kindness and that is the underlying philosophy behind our anti-bullying movement: a movement we hope lives year round beyond Pink Shirt Day. After all, kindness never goes out of style. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 2): https://studio.code.org/sections/LIDSBR __________________________________________________ Reminders:

This morning, We had another rehearsal for our celebration of learning. The lyrics for "Land of the Silver Birch" and "What I Am" are posted on D2L - please have a look and try to memorize the words...(and don't forget the actions). The afternoons this week and next will be used to build and program our Lego Mindstorms kits, to solidify our understandings of simple machines. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 2): https://studio.code.org/sections/LIDSBR __________________________________________________ Reminders:

We finished "Storm Child" this afternoon. What an interesting look into our province's past, especially in the relations between aboriginals and our early settlers. We began working with lego mindstorms this afternoon. We talked about our responsibilities to ensure that we're strong stewards of the tools we are given. We'll continue to build and program next week. Have a great, long, long weekend. There is no school Thursday, Friday, or Monday. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 2): https://studio.code.org/sections/LIDSBR __________________________________________________ A message from Mme. Bergerman, Hello amazing POW parents! We are so thankful for all of the donations you’ve provided for our Idea Lab thus far. Students have begun working on their design challenges that support the needs of a classmate. Their creations are amazing! Because we have every student in the school working with our supplies we have found that some in particular are running a bit low. Ideally, we’d love to receive your donations on Mondays or Tuesday mornings before the 8:30 AM bell as we have a team of dedicated volunteers helping to sort and organize our space. That being said, we will always welcome anything you think would be valuable for us to use here in the Idea Lab. We would like to ask for specific items for the month of February:
Sincerely, Rayna __________________________________________________ Reminders:
