Question of the night: Name one thing you can do that helps the environment.
What an amazing day! We began and ended the day with "The Lorax". We read the book this morning, then brainstormed some ways that we can "care". We'll be visiting this concept of "care" over the next few weeks, as part of our science studies. At the end of the day, we watched the Lorax. In between, we spent a bit of time on spelling, where we reviewed the long and short "e" sounds from last week. This week's rule is short and long "i" sounds, and some words that you can practice are here: mind, child, idea, bright, while, life, island, goodbye, live, type, finish, decide, alive, exciting, appetite and favourite. We also worked on the perimeter of our name this morning. We used block letters and worked on finding the perimeter of each letter, as well as our name's today perimeter. Be safe tonight. Happy Halloween! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: A challenge...tomorrow morning, whisper the word "Compost" to Mr. V first thing in the morning and win a superstudent ticket.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Wow, what a day full of learning! We began the day by listing things that are unique about Calgary, and our favourite places in calgary. We then used that list to make videos in IRIS. We'll use these videos for evidence of how much we'll learn over the next year of studying our great city. That took much longer than anticipated, so we postponed our spelling until tomorrow. Stay tuned for our words of the week. In the morning, we also talked about calculating area more efficiently by using the formula: area = length x width. We also explored cusinaire rods to practice some of these concepts. In the afternoon, we talked at length about landfills in calgary. We then talked about how we can make landfills last longer: we can either make bigger landfills...or throw away less "stuff". We decided that throwing away less stuff is better, so we'll focus on that over the next few weeks. Finally, we used google maps to take pictures of calgary's three landfills, then used our math skills to estimate the area of each one. We'll see how accurate we were tomorrow. Please dress up tomorrow, and make sure that our costumes are appropriate for school, especially our kindergarten buddies. Be safe. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What are your plans for this weekend?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Hello! Oh, the day after halloween dance...always an interesting day! We started the day with PE, then spent some time together in a circle. Today's circle was great - we talked about how we feel when we're frustrated, and if it's ok to feel that way. After circle, we explored our art mosaics supply, which we sorted together as a grade 4 community. We'll begin using them to make our prairie mosaic next week. At the end of the day, we finished our work on area and perimeter on minecraft. we'll work together next week to make sure we're moving toward learning the concept. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What did you do today in Power HOur?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** We began the day with our last science observation. It was super interesting, and a bit gross, to see all of our moldy bread. We noticed that breads that had water and sunlight were much more likely to have mold on them. There were some exceptions of course, which is why science is super interesting. We tried to make some conclusions from our observations, as well. In the morning, we also logged into our first attempt at minecraft. We worked on area and perimeter puzzles, which is perfect for minecraft, since there are square blocks. We'll have a bit more time tomorrow, then it's onto our next math topic... In the afternoon, we had another round of power hour, then finished the day with Phys Ed, where we're exploring volleyball skills. Don't forget about the halloween Dance tonight! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Assuming we're exploring minecraft tomorrow, what do you think would be a good project for us to work on?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Mrs. K was in this this morning for Mr. V. We worked on some spelling sorting, as well as using the possessive in our writing. It's very different than using plurals!! We also worked on using square centimetre units, which we'll continue tomorrow. In the afternoon, we had music, then spent some time exploring the library. We also met up with our grade 2 buddies, which was great! We used cusinaire rods and worked on building puzzles. We'll be exploring cusinaire more and more over the next few weeks, especially as they apply to multiplication. Family Dance tomorrow night! Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What was one thing you noticed from your sketching on the ridge today?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Hello! This morning looked different than our typical mornings. We started the day with some brain warm-ups by finding and sorting "e" vowel sound words into long and short categories. We'll do some more work on this tomorrow. After our spelling warm-up, we worked on area, again. We started to talk about square units, then moved into square centimetres. We're getting great at finding area and perimeter of shapes - we just need reminders to use our units. After recess, we had an amazing art lesson with Ms. Ferrari. She taught us, once again, some techniques to use with watercolour pencils. This time we focused on prairie landscapes, which helped us when we had our walk in the afternoon. And...speaking of afternoon walk, we had a great time on the ridge of fish creek. We did some directional sketching. It was pretty windy, which was perfect, since we could talk about the prairie winds! Thank you to all parents that were able to help with our walk. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What are some symbols or things that remind you of Calgary?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Welcome back! We started the morning with the story of "Little Boo", the seed that became a pumpkin. We used the book as a spring board to discussing plant lifecycles. We documented it as scientists in our visual journals. We also talked about a new spelling rule this morning - long and short "e" sounds. Remember, vowel sounds are usually short, unless something is forcing it to be long. We'll talk more about it tomorrow. In the meantime, here are some words for this week: mean, money, reached, asleep, ready, spread, easy, least, remember, empty, forest, agree. For math, we're starting to talk more about area and square units. We read, "Sir Cumference and the Isle of Immeter" this morning, then worked on building shapes and calculating their perimeter and area. In the afternoon, we worked on a visual journal page with the title, "I Am Calgary." If you had to describe Calgary to a non-calgarian, what are some symbols that are iconic to Calgary? Don't forget our walk to the ridge tomorrow afternoon. The weather looks fine!! Bye! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Post one word that you learned in french today. You can write it in english, if you want.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Whoa, a full day of learning... We started the day with some sweating in PE, then cooled off by finishing off our first mathnet of the year: The problem of the Passing Parade. Once we finished that video, we met in a circle. We discussed things that make us frustrated, how we handle those frustrations, and if it's ok to be frustrated. We then talked about things we're looking forward to over the weekend. We ended the day with some French, then quickly met up with our kindie buddies. We're going to try to meet with them again next week to plan our solutions for "BunnyGate"...check Ms. Purkiss' blog for more info. Please remember to bring your art mosaic donations, and that we're off to Fish Creek next TuesDay PM. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What was your robot's name today?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Hello. We had a full morning of spelling work. We practised the silent "e" rule at the end of the word. Basically, most "a" vowel sounds are short (e.g. apple, ant) unless something is forcing it to be long. This week's rule taught us two things that can make "a" long...1) a double vowel word (eg. faint, paint) or 2) a silent "e" at the end of the word (eg. hate, mate, fate). We did some work on Math area robots. We drew robots using squares and rectangles, then calculate the area of each of its parts. In the afternoon, we had Power Hour then PE. Tomorrow is Friday! See you then. ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: Post as many plural words as you can.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** We hit the ground running this morning. We started, very briefly, talking about plurals this morning. Our intention is to explore the difference between plural (more than one) and possessive (ownership). Basically, when you need to use an apostrophe and when you Don't! We also talked about silent "e" words this morning, which is another part in long and short vowel sounds. Wow, it's amazing how well we're doing with our spelling. We'll continue tomorrow. In math, we talked about area. We need to make sure that our units don't change when we're figuring out the area of a shape. We also helped some of our grade 1 friends from Mrs. Smith's class with designing an "area" robot. We'll be creating one ourselves tomorrow. In the afternoon, we spent some time with Mrs. Dennill, then were off to the Library, and finished with some handwriting and PE. It was a super fun afternoon, too! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech.
