Question of the night: Post one interesting fact about Alberta's regions.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Welcome back! Mr. L was in for Mr. V today...try saying that 5 times fast! We started the day with some visual journal work on the nutrient cycle and food webs/chains. We put our scientific knowledge into art form...we'll have a bit more time later this week to finish our work, if needed. We began working on area today, starting with square units. We'll continue tomorrow, and will likely get into square cms and metres next week. Stay tuned for a minecraft challenge, too!! In the afternoon, we began researching Alberta's natural regions this afternoon. We focused on studying our class website <https://veroneseblog.weebly.com/social-studies.html>. We'll continue this exploration and research later this week. ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: ENJOY THE WEEKEND! BE KIND TO YOURSELF.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** It's Friday the 13th...ooooooooooo! This morning, we started the day with some PE, then had a circle to discuss the week. We talked about our presentation from this week. We were able to get together with the other grade 4 class this morning to explore some earned time. Some students worked on card tricks, others on lego and k'nex, and some played with some ozo bots. It was super interesting to see everyone exploring together. We ended the day with an amazing author visit by David Robertson <http://www.darobertson.ca/>. He read us his book, "When we were alone", then talked to us about residential schools and reconciliation. Please remember that monday is a PD DAY... HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND. ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: Tell us about your Power Hour.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** What an amazing day! We welcomed Scientist Louise to our learning community this morning. She led us through a number of tasks and conversations about natural and artificial waste. It was amazingly valuable, and opened our eyes to many issues facing our planet. We talked about how it's all about making choices. In the afternoon, we had our first power HOur session. Wow, there was a huge level of excitement in the room after this session. Students are super excited about their sessions! We have a special author visit tomorrow. It starts at 10:15am, and will run for about an hour. Everyone is welcome. ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: Write as many words as you can that have 2 vowels beside each other.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Wowza, what a day! We started the day with the book, "A visitor for Bear", where we journaled about bear's change in emotion throughout the book. Our writing is really coming along. Next week, we'll work a bit on possessive v. plural...always a favourite! In the morning, we also worked hard on our spelling rule of the week, "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking", which gets us to explore long and short vowel sounds. This week, we're focusing on "a". Tomorrow, we'll be talking about the silent "e" at the end of words. Oh, and let's not forget our biodegradable experiments, or moldy bread! Some of our bread is, umm, an interesting shade of greens, blues, blacks, and whites... In the afternoon, we had music with Mrs. Dennill, then spent some time with Mrs. Cornford in the library, before meeting up with our, new, grade 2 buddies. We got to know them by using a venn diagram. We have an in-school presentation tomorrow about...drumroll please...Waste!! See you then! ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: Find as many things around the house that are about 1 metre (or 100 cm, of course) in length.
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Welcome Back! we started the day with our monthly spelling "check". We made sure to focus on the spelling rules that we have already studied: hard and soft g & c, consonant blends, and consonant clusters. In math, we continued to talk about measurement, with specific focus on converting mm to cm. We also began talking about metres and cm. All this unit talk so that we can get ready for area next week. In the afternoon, we worked on handwriting our letter "d", then met with our kindie buddies for some leaf art...we even used our art to begin telling a story. Wow, lots done in such a short amount of time! ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: What are you thankful for this weekend? Have a great Thanksgiving!
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Hello! What an amazing Terry Fox Day. We began the day with our terry fox assembly, where two of our classmates shaved their head to raise money for Terry Fox. Well done, JH and OK. After the run, we calculated that we ran for roughly 75 kms all together...wow!! We ended the day with some recycling, then a bit of earned time for the week. Have a great thanksgiving! ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: Who do you want to nominate from our field trip this afternoon and why?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Hello! First of all, thank you to all of the parents that were able to volunteer for our trip this afternoon. Without your support, we simply can't enjoy these experiences! Wow, what a morning. Mrs. K was in this morning. We worked on some measurement work in math, then worked on some journal reflections. In the afternoon, we were such amazing leaders to our buddies. We were talking with them, listening to their questions, asking them questions, and making sure that they were safe. We led by example, and we should be very proud of ourselves. Don't forget the Terry Fox Run tomorrow. See below for specifics. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Terry Fox Run The Terry Fox run will be held this Friday on October 6, 2017. Students from the Grade 6 classes will be collecting money for Toonies for Terry. Our school’s fundraising goal is $5373.00 – one dollar for every kilometer Terry Fox ran during the Marathon of Hope. Our assembly will begin at 8:45 am on Friday with the Terry Fox Run itself happening along the ridge from 10:00-11:00 am. ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: Choose one word to describe Terry Fox. What is it?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Also, if you are able to volunteer, we are looking for a few parents to come on a Fall walk with us on Thursday, October 5th, in the afternoon. Please send me a note if you'd like to come on a walk. Wow, what a huge shift in the weather. We were able to go outside for our recess today, which made a huge difference in our learning inside. We began the day with some final work on proper & common nouns. Next week, we'll likely touch on making nouns plural. We got to work with Ms. Michelena, a mosaic artist here in Calgary. She has been working on creating a new mosaic about Alberta's people and history, which will be on display at the parkland community centre. We learned about the different types of tiles used, as well as the different tools needed to make mosaic artwork. We were super engaged in the work. So, if your child comes home saying they played with hammers and broken class today in school, it's true! We only had a few minutes to talk about our new spelling rule of the week: long and short vowel "a". We'll work on it more tomorrow and the rest of the week. Here's a quick video reminder of what is meant by short and long vowels...Long vowels say their name. Here's a quick word list for this week: fact, danger, animal add, afraid, paid, half, safe, yesterday, main, holiday, escape. In the afternoon, we met up with our kindie buddies to do some research and art on terry Fox. We will continue our terry fox work tomorrow by writing about his character traits. See you tomorrow. ____________________________________________________ Terry Fox Run The Terry Fox run will be held this Friday on October 6, 2017. Question of the night: What is your passion? What do you love to learn about?
**We are in need of MANY 2-litre Soda bottles for our classroom. If you have some to spare, please send cleaned bottles with your child. Thank you!** Also, if you are able to volunteer, we are looking for a few parents to come on a Fall walk with us on Tuesday, October 3rd, in the afternoon. Please send me a note if you'd like to come on a walk. Wow, October already...and our first indoor recess of the year. Unfortunately, I fear it will not be the last. We started the day with some talk about character, not the person kind, but the quality kind. We looked at being wonderers, and how, as kids, we're super enthusiastic about the world. We'll be talking more about all these topics this week, as we look at the life of Terry Fox and his inspirational message. We completed a final assessment on hard and soft "g" and "c". We watched the following animations to cement this spelling rule: "i, y, and e soften c and g".Hard and soft C and hard and soft g. We'll start a new spelling rule tomorrow, so stay tuned. In math, we finalized some of our thinking around perimeter, and will be moving into measurement and conversions later this week. We made some observations in our moldy science experiments, then talked very briefly about natural waste. We'll continue the discussion tomorrow during our field trip. Oh, and of course, in ticket to curlew, we watched a quick heritage minute on a "soddie". Please dress warmly tomorrow as we're still planning on going for a nature walk with our buddies. Especially remember to wear appropriate footwear, as there is nothing worse than having soggy socks! ____________________________________________________ Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech.
