We completed our third week of book club today. Tomorrow is our meeting to discuss this week's reading, and if we have time, we'll discuss last week's posts, too.
In the afternoon, we worked on some alliteration with Ms. Covic, then put the finishing touches on our blackfoot research. Next week, we'll start our second tribe's research, likely the Peigan. Please remember to bring in an old shoe box, as we'll be using these over the next couple of weeks. Many dates have been added to our calendar at the bottom of this post. Please familiarize yourself with these dates. Homework:

A very busy and productive day. Students started the morning talking about symmetry and relating it to multiplication. We're going to be working on multiplication throughout this week.
We continued with book Clubs this morning. We've got one day left for this week, then our roles are due on Friday. As always, we'll meet together on Friday to discuss our roles and posts. In the afternoon, we continued with social research, focusing on the Blackfoot Nation. The links we're using are on D2L, and most have chosen to use the Glenbow Museum's Online Blackfoot Exhibit. Check it out, if you haven't before! Many dates have been added to our calendar at the bottom of this post. Please familiarize yourself with these dates. Homework:

Welcome back! We jumped right back into our learning today. Of course, we had to have a circle to chat about our break. Some very exciting adventures were had by all!
This morning, we continued to talk about multiplication in the context of arrays. We folded paper to see how many ways we could arrive at numbers. We'll continue this type of multiplicative reasoning all this week, then move into 3D objects next week. We even talked a bit about prime numbers, which isn't in the grade curriculum, but came out of our conversation today. In the afternoon, we tried to recreate the phases of the moon, focusing on the fact that the moon does not emit light, it simply reflects light. We then began to talk about how our eye works, but we'll continue that later in the unit. We also began our first nation research this afternoon, focusing on the Blackfoot. We'll continue tomorrow. Happy St. Patrick's Day to you! Today we were able to finish our second week of book clubs. Students have been extremely focused on completing their reading, as well as their roles. Their work is done on D2L, so please take a look, if you like.
Our inaugural "Flashlight Friday" was held today, on a Thursday, no less. A great success, and hopefully a weekly activity. In the afternoon, we had a great time watching irish Dancers, in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. As always, grade 4s represented themselves very well. Then, we worked with Ms. Covic on our art/language arts stained "Glass". Students are working on poems to accompany their art. Please don't forget to bring in stories about your elders. We'll be beginning our Elder board after Spring Break. Have a great Spring Break. Be safe! Homework:

Hello! A full day, once again. This morning, we practiced our mental math skills with games of dueling wizard and 99. We're getting pretty good at addition and subtraction. We also worked on our book clubs, and Will have some more sessions this week. Remember, Book Club roles are always due on Friday in D2l Discussions.
In Pe, we got to use our flashlights to play mission impossible in the dark. It was very fun. We have some james "Bondses" in the making! In the afternoon, we had a presentation on Trebuchets by Matthew H in Grade 5. It was his Genius Hour project. We also had a talk about friendship. Finally, we practiced our multiplication "facts" by using Math-ogamy. Basically, folding paper to make arrays. We'll practice more tomorrow. Please don't forget to bring in stories about your elders. We'll be beginning our Elder board later this week. Bye! Homework:

MMM....pi! Today is Pi day, and what's better than Pie than, well, Pi. Ok, I understand Math jokes aren't always funny, but I couldn't resist. This morning we talked about Pie, and tried to calculate it. Of course, we didn't know we were looking for Pi, we just thought we were trying to fit squares in to circles.
Book clubs were not very long today, so we'll make up the time tomorrow. In the afternoon, we began our discussions on First Nations tribes of Alberta. Please remember to bring in something that shows your connection to an elder. It can be anything, eg. a story they shared with you, something you do together with your elder, etc. We also worked with light this afternoon, and tried to prove that light travels in straight lines. Once that was proven, we tried to work with mirrors to reflect that light onto other surfaces. We'll keep working with flashlights all this week. Have a good night! Homework:

This morning we had our first book club end-of-week meeting to discuss our roles. Each group took the time to read each other's postings, then assess themselves, as well as their group. It worked very well. Posts are on D2L, so please have a look if you're interested. Book clubs will be 5 weeks long.
Please have a look at the "homework" below. We will be experimenting with light next week, so it's helpful if you have a flashlight here at school. If not, hopefully we can find one here. Have a great weekend. Homework:

Hi All! We're coming up to the end of our first week of Book CLubs. Postings are always due on Friday, which is when our groups will meet and discuss posts. We will also assess our work at that time. Most students have used the audio recordings that are on D2L. More of the chapters will be posted tonight, so they will be ready to go tomorrow.
We played a new game in Math today called Dueling Wizards. Try it at home. Please look below for important messages: students are asked to bring photographs of their grandparents or others they consider to be their Elders. Students can gather pictures of grandparents and Elders as children, young adults or as older people. Each student will have a space on a bulletin board where they can post their pictures. Students may also post anything that symbolizes this person to them. For example, if the Elder plays card games with the student, he or she could put a playing card on the wall. Some other examples of connections to our elders is teaching how to knit and baking special recipes. Right now, we are focusing on teachings from our elders, rather than physical artifacts that our elders possess. Homework:

Hello! This morning, we continued with our book clubs. Mr. V is reading and recording the books. Some of the books have been posted online, and others will be posted today. They are in D2L under Content and Language Arts.
We studied our shadows throughout the day, beginning in the morning and ending just before the end of school. We noticed a few interesting things, like that our shadows changed size and direction throughout the day. Stay tuned for more on this tomorrow. In the afternoon, we began talking about our new elders project. Students have been asked to bring in something that represents learning that they have acquired from their elder(s). students are asked to bring photographs of their grandparents or others they consider to be their Elders. Students can gather pictures of grandparents and Elders as children, young adults or as older people. Each student will have a space on a bulletin board where they can post their pictures. Hello! This morning, we were able to start reading with our book clubs. We were interrupted in the middle by a fire drill, which we rocked, by the way, then continued on with our reading. We have a fair amount of reading to do this week, so we might have to take our books home to finish. Our Book Club roles are, as always, due on Friday. They are to be completed on D2L.
This afternoon, we began talking about light & Shadows a little more in depth. We talked about things that "emit" light, and others that do not (or, things that reflect light). We only see things because they are reflected...which is amazing, when you think about it! We also watched a cool video about shadow Puppets - here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9bbN4zQAWY We'll continue with Book clubs tomorrow, as well as introduce a social studies project about our elders and their teachings. Bye for now! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 2): https://studio.code.org/sections/LIDSBR __________________________________________________ Reminders:
