We'll measure "best" by height...so, which one of your plants is the tallest?
A very warm day...wowza! Sports Day this morning was amazing. Students were super excited and very behaved respectfully through the entire morning. In the afternoon, we had our year-book signing, which made the afternoon super short for us in the class. We were so amazing at regaining our focus after the signing. We had two jobs this afternoon: our final plants observations and water, as well as our picture book task. We'll talk about our plants tomorrow, and make our final conclusions. Have a great night. Stay hydrated! ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What are your plans for the weekend?
Wow, what a day! We began the day with our final friday flick. Today's show was about rocks and new theories about the link between life on earth and rocks. It was called "Life's Rocky Start". Here's a link: NOVA Life's Rocky Start. After our flick, we had a bit of earned time outside. An exciting game of "Splat" was played... When we came back in the classroom, we worked on our community building. There was a flood in our community, so it was great to see our community members work together to solve problems. Don't forget Sports Day on Monday morning. Please dress for the weather... Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What did you work on in our community challenge today?
T-4 days left... This morning, we had had music with Mrs. Dennill, where we performed our latest musical creations. After music, we had a great time playing multiplication squares, where we have a new record: 52 squares in 40 minutes. Anyone care to beat that? Congratulations to our current record holder, CM. After enjoying a windy and chilly recess outside, we again worked on our living off the land experiment. Before embarking on our journey, we had a class-wide conversation on what makes a successful community. We talked about how the success of our community is only guaranteed if EVERYONE has food, water, and shelter. Some of our community members started to build a community food & Supplies "Bank", where people could come and take what they need and donate extra materials. It has been amazing to see how our community members' attitudes have changed towards one another. We'll continue next week. We said goodbye to EZ today, as he's heading to China for a visit. Enjoy!! Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What was most memorable to you during our "visit" to India today?
Wow, the day just flew! Today, we studied the community of India. We looked at rural v. urban. It's amazing the communities around the world! We had a presentation by JF about fishing. He walked us through some common fish found in southern Alberta, the materials needed for fishing, and the best areas to fish. It was super informative! In the afternoon, after our picture book expert task, we worked on our living off the land experiment. We talked about how working together to build a community helps the entire community. The goal for this experiment is to make sure that everyone's needs are met (water, shelter, and sustainable food source). That's the goal of our community, and hopefully the goal of all communities. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What does the word "Denouement" mean?
It's t-8 days... We had music with Mrs. Dennill this morning. This morning, we also talked about the sun, which is the source of all energy on Earth. we, of course, linked that to our plants & Animals unit. We met up with some aliens too, which was our last encounter with them this year. Today was a day full of presentations. Thank you to DS for his presentation on pets, as well as RT and CM for their presentation on HSIBJ. It was great to have a recap of our trip and the reasons for why it's important to know our history. Tomorrow we're again talking about communities. This time, we focus on Ukraine. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: We know what IWP stands for in our class. What do you think it should stand for?
This morning, we watched another part of NOVA's "To The Moon". We talked about the design thinking process, namely that there were so many problems and mistakes made leading up to the launch, everyone at NASA had to be super flexible and adaptable to figure out the problems. Fittingly, we met up with some "Aliens" in the gym for our 3rd session of skating. We're really improving! Don't forget our last session on Monday morning... The rest of the day, we had an IWP, with some priorities. We had to complete a plant observation and our picture book tasks. Once done, we had some earned time. Mrs. Dennill came in at the end of the day to finish a certain art project for a certain person that has a certain special day this weekend. I'll leave it at that. Have a great weekend. Enjoy the weather! ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: Name one thing you have in common with Gilber (the farmer in Peru) or Viviana (the girl that lives in Lima).
A really fun day! We started with some music with Mrs. Dennill. I understand we have some "performances" scheduled for next week in music. In the morning, we continued to talk about communities. We specifically focused on rural v. urban today, and watched two videos that were based in Peru. One video focused on Viviana's life in Lima, Peru, while another focused on Gilber's life in rural peru. We completed a venn diagram to compare and contrast these two videos. After recess, we played a game that helped with our basic facts. You gotta be quick to win this game. The link is here, if you want to play on your own: Basic Facts. After lunch, we finally got a chance to challenge each other with our symmetry projects in minecraft. Some of us have a great eye for detail! Please don't forget your helmets and socks tomorrow. We're going to see aliens again at 9:30am, at least that's what I am predicting. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: Name a few communities to which you belong.
We began the day with an independent work period, where students have priorities that they must work towards. Some of us had the chance to help the kindies with alien inline. We're such great role models. We had a couple of presentations today from students. Thank you to BH, RT and TD for teaching us a bit more about police and the stock market. This morning's work focused around community. We related habitats to communities, and had students discuss they communities to which students belong. We also read and watched a video on the book If the world were a village. In the afternoon, We continued to work on our symmetry project. Today was spent building and thinking about how we're going to challenge each other tomorrow. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: What symmetrical picture did you build in minecraft today?
Hello! We started the day this morning with Mrs. Dennill and some music. We continue to impress! After music, we played around with Miras and symmetry. Basically, we used a mira to complete the other half of a picture. We then tried to do the same with no mira and using a mirror. We tested how close we were to the actual picture...some of us are quite visual! After recess, we did some work on multiplication of 2 digit by 1 digit numbers. We used something called the "box" method. We have to make sure our basic facts are in our brains...that really helps with this method. In the afternoon, we had another session with our picture books. After that, we started a new minecraft challenge involving symmetry. Today, we were making sure that we understood what symmetry means. Tomorrow, we'll use these skills to try to stump each other. Below this post are some pictures of our work. Have a look! Please don't forget to check our inline skating schedule. It's not very fun having to use somebody else's socks! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet.
