Question of the night: What was your favourite part of Alien Inline today?
We had a great day back today. Our plants are growing, even the ones that we hypothesized would not grow. We have a few more weeks of observations... This morning, we also spent some time talking about food webs, and we even made our very own food web in the classroom. Each student was asked to come up with either a consumer or producer, then we had to think about how these living things were connected through the food web. This morning, we continued to work on symmetry, and got to use miras to prove that our designs were symmetrical. We used cusinaire rods again today, but will move into pictures tomorrow. Plus, stay tuned for a new minecraft assignment involving symmetry! In the afternoon, we had our picture book tasks, then watched a short video on habitats, specifically desert (not to be confused with Dessert) habitats. And, of course, we ended our day with some aliens. Please check the schedule below for our remaining times. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: Please see the invitation to a lemonade stand at the bottom of this post. It's a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes. This morning, we watched part of our Friday Flick, To The Moon, in celebration of the moon landing 48 years ago! We talked about the scientific process, and how it's super important to make accurate hypotheses and calculations. We linked it with our study of plants, even though our study is not exactly life or death. After our picture book experts this morning, we spent some time outside for earned time. Mrs. Dennill also visited this morning to work on a super secret project...shhhh... Please have a look at our alien in-line schedule below. Our next session is Monday @ 2-3pm. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: Reflect on your trip to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump...what did you learn?
It was nice to be back in the classroom today. Our trip to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo jump was amazing, too! We reflected on our trip this morning, and spent some time looking into some blackfoot names that we see around Calgary. The Calf Robe Bridge now makes much more sense! We also spent some time on observing our plants this morning. We have a few junior gardeners in our classroom, as there are some plants have really started to grow! One of our plants grew 21 cm in 3 days!! In the morning, we also played some multiplication squares, which helps us with our basic multiplication facts. Our record number of squares is now 33 held by CG. In the afternoon, we had another picture book session, followed by some PE outside, then some work on v-ville, focusing on shelter. We're going to start a new dwellings project next week, so our knowledge of needs (specifically shelter) will really come in handy. But, more on that next week. Please have a look at our alien in-line schedule below. Our next session is Monday @ 2-3pm. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: NO question...please remember to be at school tomorrow at 7:15am. We're all super excited!!
An early blog today, since Mr. V was away this afternoon. This morning, we continued to work on our living things science unit. We focused on the interconnectedness of plants and animals, especially as it applies to the food web. We learned the terms producers, consumers, herbivore, omnivore, and carnivore. Our next watering and observation day for our plants is Thursday, since tomorrow is our trip to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. After recess, we worked on symmetry using cusinarie rods. We built puzzles on grids, then made a mirror image on the other side of the line of symmetry. Some of us then tried to stump each other by building half of a picture and having someone else complete the other side. We're very visual! In the afternoon, we read our picture books, played some multiplication squares, then had our first session of Alien In-line. Our schedule is below...and please remember your socks!! Have a great night. We'll see you bright and early tomorrow @ 7:15am. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: WHAT DID YOU OBSERVE IN YOUR SOLITUDE SPOTS THIS MORNING?
Wow, what a day! We started the day with our plant experiments. It was a watering and observation day. We had a great surprise, as one of our plants has sprouted... We also spent some time this morning observing the outside world. We were in our solitude spots outside looking specifically for living things. After that, we started working on symmetry in math, by using photo booth. Yes, photo booth! iN THE AFTERNOON, WE TALKED ABOUT THE NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS. TODAY, WE FOCUSED ON MEETING OUR NEED FOR SHELTER, WHICH IS WHAT WE TRIED TO INCORPORATE INTO V-VILLE. BASICALLY, IF YOU WERE PLACED IN THE MIDDLE OF V-VILLE, HOW WOULD YOU HAVE YOUR SHELTER NEED MET? DON'T FORGET ALIEN IN-LINE TOMORROW @ 2PM. PLEASE BRING SOCKS AND HELMETS... HAVE A GREAT NIGHT. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: What are you building in V-Ville?
Another "plant" day. We started off with our Friday Flick. Last week's was all about animal adaptations, and this week was all about Plant adaptations. It was super interesting...who knew plants had "behaviours". Here is the link, if you'd like to watch at home: Smarty Plants. Our our friday flick, we had our first independent watering and observation day of our plants. Of course, our plants have germinated yet, so our observations our not that exciting. But, we have to water them every second day with exactly 25 ml of liquid. We'll see how they look next week. We had another session of our picture book reading, then built in v-ville. We'll build a bit next week as well, and we'll relate the needs of living things (like plants & animals) to the needs of living things in V-ville. We'll see if they have everything they need to survive. Don't forget field trip forms. Oh, and bike to school forms went home today. Have a look. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Alien Inline - June 5-19: HELMETS & HYGIENE: Alien In-Line provides certified helmets, but for best hygiene and comfort we suggest that each participant bring in his or her own certified helmet. Question of the night: What did you eat today? Plants or animals or both?
And we're off and running into June. This morning, we had our last music class for recorders. As always, Mrs. Dennill is super impressed with our music abilities. After music, we spent some time talking about from where our food comes, plants or animals. We realized that our food is really interconnected. Think about, for example, pasta, which is made with flour (plant) and eggs (animal). This is true for most of the food we eat. In the afternoon, we learned about animal lifecycles with our buddies and duckies. We looked at how the ducks have changed since they first hatched, and plus we got to see them swim in our pool. Please remember your field trip form. Our trip is next Wednesday. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
