Question of the night: No question...enjoy your break!
This morning, we watched an episode of brain games. This one was all about light and colour, and how your brain sometimes tricks you. We also learned about the different wavelengths of light: did you know that you can't see UV light? We finished the last of our ancestry presentations. Today, we learned that one of our classmates has ancestors from Iceland, another from Ukraine, and another from Germany. One common theme this morning was that many of our ancestors came to Canada for a "better life". We'll talk more about this topic when we come back from Spring Break. In the morning, we also watched Wallace and Gromit, which helped us to see some of the simple machines in actions. They were more like complex machines though, because they usually had more than one simple machine in them. In the afternoon, we built. Some students worked on building different types of bridges (eg. truss and cantilever), while others worked on devices using simple machines, eg. egg beater, stationary bike, sailboat with pulley, and others. We'll continue to work on these when we get back from our break. On that note, enjoy your time off. Be safe. See you in April! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What did you learn about probability today, especially when playing plinko?
We continued to work on our recorders this morning, and, again, I keep hearing of various belts being awarded. Keep up the good work! After music, there were 3 family presentations. We made some interesting connections between our ancestors, including a couple students that had relatives travel from europe on the same ship. It's great to be able to share our connections, and to understand that we're all connected. Throughout the day today, we played around a little bit with probability by playing a bit of plinko. Well, we played a simulated version of the game. The simulation is here...enjoy! Plinko In the afternoon, we continued to work on our k'nex building projects. We learned that beam bridges are sturdy, but not in all cases, especially if it has to span a large distance. Some groups built a fan, which included gears and a seesaw with a lever and inclined plane. Another group built a well with pulleys. Through these building challenges, we're going to be studying the stability and strength of different shapes. We'll continue tomorrow and into the week after spring break. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What are you building with your K'Nex building project?
This morning, we started with a bit of music...recorders are coming along. I'm getting many reports about white, yellow, blue, and other belts... After music, we explored the strength of structures, specifically looking at arches. We tested if an arch could withstand more weight than another type of shape (a square or straight beam)...and yes, it can! We then looked at some roman aqueducts and the wildlife crossings in Banff National Park. It's no wonder why those are both designed with arches. We also had the pleasure of listening to three family background presentations, one that originated in Northwest Territories, Another in China, and one in Ukraine and Germany. Amazing, again! In the afternoon, we used some of our knowledge about shapes in the morning to begin our k'nex building challenges. Some of us are building bridges, others are building devices that use simple machines. Don't worry, you'll get to build each type. We will continue this building all week. Have a good night! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: Did you wear green for St. Patrick's Day?
A full, half-Day! We started the day by watching some amazing Irish Dancers! Wow, what talent!! We also worked a little bit on math and regrouping this morning...we'll keep going next week. Finally, Mrs. Dennill came to work on our shadow art. Our art is really moving along! Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What did you find most interesting about the Roman video today?
Wow, now that was a full day of learning! We started the day with some math work, specifically looking at exchanging and borrowing ofr subtraction. We explored some cusinarie rods and played a bit of a trading game. We'll do that again next week. After that, we had 4 family background presentations. They were great, again! The rest of the morning, we explored some d2L and website links to do with simple machines and structures. In the afternoon, we watched another NOVa program. This one was about the roman colosseum, and focused alot on its construction and use of simple machines. The romans really were masters of construction! St Patrick's Day is tomorrow. Don't forget to wear green. I won't be here, and hopefully those pesky leprechauns will stay away, too!! Have a good night and weekend... ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: During our simple exploration in the afternoon, tell us one interesting fact you learned.
Good Day! This morning, we began the day by exploring pi a little bit further, even though it was no longer pi day. We figured out that no matter the size of the circle, if you divide its circumference (whoa, big word) by its diameter (whoa, another one), you always get pi...or "3 and little bit more". Super interesting. We watched this video, too: Pi with Pies. We also had some more family presentations, which were, as usual, excellent. It's interesting how many last names got changed when they first moved to Canada or US because people couldn't spell or pronounce them... We're also just starting to talk about subtraction...stay tuned for more. In the afternoon, we explored simple machines, watched a bit of mathnet, then did some magic...er, I mean, math tricks. See you tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: With what shape do you usually use Pi?
Our goal for tonight is 12 posts on the blog...+15 if we get there...c'mon, I know we can do it! Yummy Pi...or is that Pie? It was all about pi today, not the eating kind, but just as fulfilling. We began the day by talking about circles, squares, and how we can relate all the different measurements of a circle. Pi, Pi, Pi... We continued with family presentations, which were amazing, again! Great work, everyone. These will continue all week and likely into next week. In the afternoon, we made cards to welcome the community of legacy into our learning community. Mrs. Manzer helped with our cards and writing. After that, we watched mathnet, where we're still trying to figure out who is deceiving us with their data. Let's see if tomorrow sheds any light. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: If you could travel to any place in Alberta or the four countries, where would you go, and why?
Hello! We began the day with some music. We then talked about reflective writing, which led us to brainstorm in a web format. This morning, we also began our ancestor presentations. It's amazing to see the diversity of our backgrounds, and how they tie into the topics we are currently studying. We'll continue these presentations all week, and will likely go into next week. In the morning, we also began talking about estimation in math, which will lead into subtraction. Finally, our day ended with a discussion about living with the land, as linked to our study of Alberta's first nations, as well as the first people's of different countries, especially Peru. Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What was your favourite part of our Glenbow field trip?
Hello! This morning, we continued to work on our shadow Art. Some of the groups continue to build their art, while others are starting to test using our light sources. It's interesting to see the solutions that students are finding for their shadow "issues". We also reflected on our glenbow trip from Thursday. We talked about our wonders and our excitements from our trip. Mrs. Dennill came in a bit this morning to continue with our art project. Please remember that our family background projects are due next week, and we'll start to present soon.
Question of the night: No question...just be ready for the Glenbow tomorrow!
Good Day! Wow, what a day! We began the day by reading Weslandia by Paul Fleischman. The book was about a boy who created his own civilization. The story got us ready to visit the Glenbow tomorrow. In the morning, we also looked at Richard Scarry's What do people do all Day? The stories in this book are excellent for simple machines. In the afternoon, we had some time in the library, then looked at some slides (yes, slides) from Calgary's past. We were looking for differences between the Calgary of now and the Calgary of then. It's interesting that nature didn't seem to change much, but Calgary's landscape sure did! Please remember that we're heading to the Glenbow tomorrow. Please bring a substantial lunch, as well as a water bottle. We'll be leaving at 8:45am. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
