Question of the night: Show your parents how you would add: 458 + 394.
Hello! This morning, we continued to work with Mrs. Dennill on our recorders. I have it on good authority that we are superstars! I'm sure our kung fu belts will be rolling in quickly! We began reading the book "What do People Do All Day?" by Richard Scarry. We're going to be using this book to talk about simple machines...it's filled with them. We're going to be exploring them again tomorrow. We tied up some loose ends with our addition this morning, and will be moving onto subtraction next. After that, it's on to multiplication and division...our mental math is going to really get a workout these next few weeks. In the afternoon, we worked on our shadow art in the Idea lab. We're moving into the "testing" phase, where we'll start working with lights to see how our Shadows are looking. It'll be a work in progress, I'm sure. We finished the day with some "Secret" and Gym. Please remember your field trip forms. We go to the Glenbow on Thursday. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: Name one Simple machine and how you can use it.
This morning, we began exploring our new science units: simple machines and structures. We started by classifying simple machines. We'll continue to look at each individual simple machined tomorrow. We had a bit of a math assessment on addition with re-grouping. We'll look at the results tomorrow, then re-assess where we need to go. In the afternoon, we continued with some simple machines work, then mathnet and PE. All in all, a very relaxed day in Room 16. Please remember your field trip forms. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: WhaT are you doing for your shadow art landscape?
Wow, TGIF! We began the day by embarking on our shadow Art Landscapes. A huge thank you to Mrs. Blanchard for helping with this project. We'll continue next week, and hope to create some amazing shadows! We finished this week's episode of Mathnet - the trial of George Frankly. I didn't see the twist at the end coming! Please return your field trip form aSAP - field trip is on March 9th. Have a great weekend! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What are you interested in learning?
Wow, the day just flew by! Today, we started with some music, where we continue to work on our recorders. Please don't forget to bring them every day, in case Mrs. Dennill surprises us with more music! After music, we read a social skills story called, "What if Everybody did that?" It was great to have that conversation with everyone, and we learned that there are things that people do that really disrupt others' learning. After that, we talked about our new art/science project, Shadow art. We'll talk more about it tomorrow, but it involves landscapes from the different areas we have been studying in Social (Alberta, India, Ukraine, Tunisia, and Peru). We're going to try to re-create them using "odds and ends" and a light source. Here are some examples: Shadow Art After recess, we acted as Binary Number experts with Ms. Manzer's class. We were such amazing teachers! In the afternoon, we read "secret", worked on our scale art, played some "Magic garbage", then went to gym... Please return your field trip forms ASAP. The trip is next Thursday. Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: How is life in India the same as life in Alberta?
Hello! MArch is here....I wonder if spring will be here soon, as well? This morning, we finished reading about Marcenia Lyle in the book "Catching the Moon." She showed amazing determination and perseverance while overcoming some great obstacles. She became the first female to play on an all-male professional baseball team. We continued to work on some of our senses this morning. We used cardboard tubes to make our hearing better. We'll work on a different design tomorrow. We had another makeshift trading post this morning, as well. This time, each student was given a colour of cusinaire rod they were to maximize. We're linking this type of thinking to trading and carrying in addition and subtraction. We'll make that connection again tomorrow. In the afternoon, after fun lunch of course, we finished talking about quality of life, as related to India and Alberta. We read the book, "Fly Away Home", and reflected on the question, "does more 'stuff' make my life better?" We figured out that this was one of those questions that doesn't really have a right answer...those are sometimes frustrating. Please return your field trip forms for the glenbow ASAP. We're going on March 9th, which is next thursday.
