Question of the night: What is your hypothesis for your plant experiment? Which one will grow "best"?
May has come and go...June, here we come! Today was all about plants, or planting, to be more accurate. We spent most of the morning setting up our last major science experiment of the year. We looked at "fair" v. "Unfair" tests, then looked at variables. Finally, we had our first planting and watering day, even though some of us are watering not with water, but with other, more unique liquids. I wonder how our bean plants will grow? In the afternoon, we again started with our picture book task, then finished the day by talking, and watching a video, about the scientific method. Remember, you can claim anything you want, but if you don't have proof, people are unlikely to believe you. Some more tasks on living things tomorrow, again. Oh, and we'll probably hang out with our kindie (and ducky) buddies in the afternoon, too. Have a safe night. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: How was Power Hour?
It's hard to believe that May is almost coming to an end. We worked hard this morning on getting our plant experiments ready to go. We explored what a "fair" test or experiment is, as well as what variable we can change during our plant experiments. Please remember to bring the liquids or soils we do not have... In math, we're currently working through 3D objects. We talked about the need to use common terms when talking about objects. We learned, or refreshed our memories, what Faces, edges, and vertices are, and even built some 3d prisms using "nets". Believe it or not, there is not much else we need to talk about with 3D objects - we'll probably wrap it up tomorrow. In the afternoon, we had our final power hour. It was great to showcase some of our amazing learning. Don't forget that the link will stay posted right here on the blog, in case you want to continue with it at home. Please remember to return your field trip forms. Our trip is next wednesday. Good night... ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What picture book did you read today? Did you like it? Happy Monday! We started the day with music. This is our last week of recorders. We watched a bill Nye video about habitats, which is part of our next living things unit. We'll be exploring out outdoors tomorrow. We had an interesting math session this morning. We worked on 3d objects, which led to some "interesting" conversations/debates about curves and straight lines. We'll pick that up again tomorrow. In the afternoon, we started a new task with picture books. Essentially, we're each experts of one picture book, and everyday we must read and answer questions of other experts. It sounds complicated, but really is not. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: If you could have one adaptation to help you survive, what would it be? Hello! Thank you to all of the volunteers that have graciously donated their time this year. We are truly blessed to have such an amazing volunteer base. This morning, we watched our friday flick. This morning's show was about animal adaptations. Here's the link: NOVA Animal Imposters. These animals are super smart! This morning, we also spent some time reading in the library, then outside enjoying the sunshine. Field trip forms for our trip to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo jump went home today. Please return them ASAP. Our trip is on June 7th. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: If you could name one of the ducklings, what would it be and why?
Hello! Wow, a full day, once again. It's amazing how quickly these days fly. In the morning, we looked at different habitats and the living things that live in each one. This is a lead-in into our conversation regarding animal and plant adaptations. The types of living things in deserts are very different than the ones in oceans... We spent some time this morning finishing our work on area and perimeter challenges. Our enclosures are mostly finished, which will allow MR. V to assess our knowledge of area and perimeter. We'll move into shapes (grade 3s), 3d objects (grade 4s) and symmetry next. In the afternoon, we quickly met the kindies' new additions - ducklings! We were able to see animal lifecycles firsthand, right before our eyes. Some of us even had the ducklings climb on top of us...they are super cute. We'll be finishing up some art tomorrow, and will start a new reading task, as well. NOTE: We've updated the important dates at the bottom of this post. Please have a look. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Hello from the GIVE power hour! Question of the night: No question, but a challenge. Smile at, at least, 5 different people tonight.
Good afternoon... What a day back after an extra long weekend. We started the day with our weekly circle, then went right to music. After music, we had our final session with Mr. Mike, where he gave us feedback on our "Horns & Tales" project. He also gave us some stickers and a postcard. It was awesome to have him in our class!! After recess, we continued to work on our area and perimeter challenges. Most of us are done, which means we can move into the more creative part of building houses and structures of differing areas and perimeters. We've got our final session tomorrow. In the afternoon, we had an IWP (independent work period), where our goal was to finish some of the art that we have on the go. We were so focused. We then cleaned-up the class, went to power hour, and that was it...home time! HAve a great night. DOn't forget to smile. NOTE: We've updated the important dates at the bottom of this post. Please have a look. ____________________________________________________ Hello from the GIVE power hour! Question of the night: No question - just enjoy the long weekend!
Hello. We had a great day today. We spent most of the day attempting some perimeter and area challenges in minecraft. It was all done in a city called "perimeter-ville", where we were each given a plot of land to build some animal enclosures of given sizes. some enclosures were given specific area, while others were given specific perimeters. It was great! When we weren't building, we were reading "secret" and having some drawing sessions for our volunteer tea art and our horns and tales project. All in all, a very productive day... No school tomorrow - PD day. And no school Monday - victoria Day. Be safe! ____________________________________________________ Hello from the GIVE power hour! Question of the night: Explore area builder with your parents...who know, maybe they'll get stumped!
Hello. Today just flew by! We started the day by talking about our new, and final science unit, Living Things. We reflected a little bit about the statement: "if there were no plants, there would be no animals." We even tried to prove if that statement was true by looking at what we eat. We tried to find something that we eat that does not have any dependence on plants...it was pretty hard. After recess, we worked on area and perimeter, and worked on some simulations and puzzles. They are here: Area Builder. After lunch, we had another drawing session for our "Horns & Tales" project with Mr. Mike. Our animal mash-ups are really looking great! We also sneaked in some time to watch RT dance live online, as well as talk about dinosaur fossils and who should own them...it was quite the afternoon!! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Hello from the GIVE power hour! Question of the night: What is one thing you can do to help the orangutans?
Hello! Wow, what a day... We started today with a circle, where we talked about imaginary characters and their strengths and weaknesses. Once we were done, we went to Music, where Mrs. Dennill is ever so impressed by our recorder skills. Please remember to bring your recorders EVERY DAY! After music, we had a book club session. Some of us are into our final projects, while others are still reading and responding. We started working on perimeter this morning in math. We'll be moving into area over the next few days. We used a cool simulation this morning to explore these concepts. Here it is... In the afternoon, we visited our buddies. We're starting an awareness campaign about palm oil at our school. We have been inspired by stories of orangutan's homes being destroyed for the planting and harvesting of palm oiL. We were super buddies and great role models! We finished the day with POWER Hour. Only a few more sessions left. ____________________________________________________ Hello from the GIVE power hour! Question of the night: What is one array you can make for the number 24? (or, what are two numbers that multiplied together give you 24?)
This morning, we had students that live in legacy join us. It was great to get to know them, and to have some friendships begin to form. Thank you to RT and JT for being our ambassadors from room 16. After recess, we had a brainstorming/drawing session for our horns and tales project with Mr. Mike. It's great to see the amazing creativity shown by our budding artists. In the afternoon, we worked on some multiplication using paper folding. We tried to fold paper into equal parts, then related it to multiplication arrays. We're moving into seeing multiplication as 2-dimensional, which is different that addition and subtraction. We ran out of time this afternoon so we didn't get to our study of fossils and who should own them...we'll do that tomorrow. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
