Question of the night: Tell us about your favourite experiment from our friday flix.
TGIF! This morning, we watched an episode of the Nature of things for "Friday Flix". The episode was about our senses, and how our brain uses our senses together, not on their own. It was super interesting. Here's the link...Nature of Things. During our time in the library, we were able to have a look at a student's replica of an aerostream trailer. He built it using actual metal, and talked to us about the process of building, then refining the end-product. We spent some time outside this morning, then we worked with Mrs. Dennill on our volunteer tea art. It's really coming along! Have a safe weekend... ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour April 2017 Grades 1 & 2 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/CTPSWY Grades 3 - 6 -- http://studio.code.org/sections/MJMFRV ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What is your favourite word to use?
Hello! Mrs. K was in this morning while Mr. V helped around the school during the grade 6s PAT. We worked on some art, but we're not telling you what type, since it's a bit of a surprise... In the afternoon, we had our final building session of v-ville. Now, it's our time to de-brief our learning. We're going to talk about needs v. wants, as well as quality of life, and see if the residents of v-ville have their needs met and at least some of their wants. I wonder how well we know our needs? Before the end of the day, we had a preview of tomorrow's friday flick. It's all about our senses and how our brain interprets signals coming into it. It looks supper interesting! See you tomorrow!
Question of the night: What is a choice you made today that helped our learning community?
Today was a day of exploration and expert presentations. This morning, we had Scientist Amanda talk to us about life cycles. It was amazing! We talked about classifying animals using dichotomous keys, different types of life cycles (simple, incomplete, complete), and even got to dissect some owl pellets. Wow, those owl pellets are amazing - we found so many little bones in them...owls must be great hunters. In the afternoon, our buddies in Ms. Overacker's class invited us to a presentation from mr. Taylor. He talked to us about his passion, which is rescuing endangered orangutans. His presentation was very inspiring, and made us really think about our choices. It was a great opportunity for us to re-visit a central question this year: How do my choices affect myself, others, and the community in which I live? He works closely with an organization called Orangutan Foundation internation, or OFI for short: orangutan.org/ Have a great night!
Question of the night: What are your two favourite animals? Hello! What a full Day! We began with music, where Mrs. Dennill continues to be super impressed with our recorder playing. After music, we had an amazing art session with Mike Grills, our resident artist. Mr. Mike introduced us to a new project in which the whole school is going to participate. We're calling it "Horns & Tales", and it's an alternative yearbook, where every student will come up with a character of themselves, with only one guideline...it cannot be human. We worked through some brainstorming today, and will put it all into action this week. Stay tuned! After recess, we worked on the relationship between multiplication and division, and we began making "triangles" to show that relationship. I've posted the document from which we worked at the bottom of this post, if you're interested. In the afternoon, we built v-ville again, but not before we individually reflected on the questions: 1) What am I building? 2) How is my building making life in v-ville better? We'll have one more building session this week, then we'll talk about needs v. wants, using guidance from v-ville's residents. Have a great night!
Question of the night: If you could live on any planet, which would you choose?
TGIF! It was a beautiful day outside, so we took some time to play with our peers and explore our surroundings, together. We began the day, however, with a "Friday Flick". Today's flick was NOVA's Alien Planets Revealed, which looked at the Kepler Space telescope. Part of the episode focused on the light and shadow aspects of kepler, then we used our imaginations to look at planets that may be able to sustain life. It was a great show! After we went to the library, we played a few games to re-enforce our multiplication facts. That will be a recurring theme for the rest of the year. Have a safe weekend! Enjoy the weather.
Question of the night: Wherever you go tonight...if it's a public place, is there a public washroom?
Hello! What an amazing day! This morning, we spent some time working on v-ville, but not before we met and planned in our committees. Only one more day of building for this round, then we de-brief how our city planning is going. We'll pick it up again later in the year. After recess, we continued to relate multiplication and division. We once again used cusinaire rods, and will be working on our division facts soon... Wow, what a full afternoon. We met a visitor on our walk to fish creek. Let's call him "Bob" the cat. What a beautiful animal! Once in fish creek, we took our time and observed nature around us. We looked a different landscapes, sat in solitary using our 5 senses, looked for signs of spring, and even studied some evidence of wildlife. It was a great afternoon. Thank you to the volunteers that were able to help by gifting us their time. TGIF tomorrow! Bye for now...
Question of the night: What multiplications can you make that equal 20? Or, using our math terms, "What multiplication equations can you make that have a product of 20?"
Hello! Wow, the weather is getting really nice outside, which is making staying indoors a bit tougher. Good thing our next science units are all about lifecycles of plants and animals. We'll spend lots of time outside for this unit, starting tomorrow with our trip to fish creek. We'll be going in the afternoon, so please dress accordingly, including sunscreen, since it's supposed to be very warm. This morning we finished our "warm-up" videos on fossils called Dino Trails. Today's episode was about dinosaur tracks in BC. Our main question while studying these videos is "Who should own fossils?" Should it be the people that find them, scientists, government? We'll be looking more deeply into this question over the next week or so. In math, we started to relate multiplication and division. We talked about building arrays (multiplication), then talked about taking the arrays apart (division). We'll continue tomorrow. We also had some quick practice with our math facts. In the afternoon, it was back to building v-ville. We first met in our committees to discuss our progress, then brainstormed some other building ideas. We had an expert builder in BT from grade 6 help us with our brainstorming and building. Please, once again, do not forget about our trip to Fish Creek tomorrow. Dress accordingly, and perhaps bring an extra snack for the afternoon. Bye for now.
Question of the night: Tell us one of your favourite multiplication fact.
Good Day! Wow, what a full day. We started today with a circle, which led to some great conversations about our feelings when we "lose" a game. After music, we had a book club session. We have only one week left to finish our books. After recess, we continued to work on our basic multiplication facts. We're starting to link multiplication and division, which is where we'll go next. We start division tomorrow. We are planning to go on a trip to fish creek in the afternoon of Thursday, May 2. We'll be exploring together with our buddies. Please let me know if you are able to volunteer. Have a great night.
