Happy Monday! We continued to talk about division this morning, especially as it applies to using cusinarie rods. We'll continue tomorrow, then it's on to fractions.
We also read wonder this morning, where we found out some not so nice things about one of Auggie's "friends". Sometimes it's tough to read this book knowing that this is the reality for some people. There was an assembly this morning about rare chromosomal awareness week. It was simply amazing to hear OS talk about her experiences and the three B's: Be Kind, Be Empathetic, Be Awesome!! Please return the signed permission forms for our two upcoming field trips. Our next field trip is next Thursday, June 2. Have a great weekend! A note from Mrs. Dennill This is a gentle reminder for grades 4-6 that May 31 (Tuesday) will be the last day for testing. Students have been given the opportunity to test during class time and at noon and after school. Students have earned belts for: white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, red, brown and black (challenge). Great Job!! Students will also be given a written test and have reviewed this information during class times. A note from Ms. Bezugley re: Beacon Hill School in Fort McMurray The families of Beacon Hill School in Fort McMurray have lost everything. Their principal, Garrett Tebay and her librarian, have asked for our support. They would like to help their families rebuild their home libraries. Prince of Wales can help!! Clean out your bookshelves, order some new books from Scholastic or stop by your local bookstore. Please drop off NEW or Gently Used books at the school. Mrs. Tebay will pick them up when she is in Calgary and deliver them. Thank you for your help! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 2): https://studio.code.org/sections/LIDSBR __________________________________________________ Reminders:
Hello! A full, half-day of learning today. We began the day with wonder, then followed it up with a new game in gym.
Our experiments are now in the ground, so now we wait and watch. We've decided to water our plants every 2 days, but we'll have to figure out what to do for the weekend. Our last day of POWER HOUR was today. Don't forget that you can always continue on after our last session. Please return the signed permission forms for our two upcoming field trips. Hello.
In the morning, we read Wonder again, and are starting to understand Auggie's personality a bit better. We'll keep going tomorrow. Most of the prep work for our planting is complete. We plant seeds tomorrow and then see where our experiments will take us. We'll continue with minecraft and our downtown core building next week. Thank you to our original grid builders: ER, TS, EW, and KK. The last day students will receive milk will be Thursday, June 2. Field trip forms went home today. There are two forms: one for the trip on the 2nd and the other for the 8th. Please return both ASAP. We began our plants experiment this morning. Don't forget to bring the materials you need, if any. We'll be planting tomorrow!
In the afternoon, we began building in our minecraft world. It's amazing to see the creativity in our community. We'll continue this into next week. Field trip forms for our Urban walk and Mayor's Expo will go home this week, likely thursday. Please sign and return ASAP. Have a great night. Welcome back. I trust everyone had a great, wet long weekend. Today, we went right back to work.
This morning, after music, we started talking about division, its relationship to multiplication, and how to build it with cusinaire rods. We'll continue tomorrow, then it'll lead us right into fractions. We also talked about our relationships to plants, then setup an experiment trying to prove photosynthesis. We'll observe our findings tomorrow. In the afternoon, we focused on Calgary's historical buildings, which will be a big part of our final couple weeks of grade 4. We used the City of Calgary's website to choose buildings for construction in our minecraft world. If all goes according to plan, tomorrow we build! Field trip forms for our Urban walk and Mayor's Expo will go home this week, likely thursday. Please sign and return ASAP. Have a great night. We began the morning by finishing Mathnet for this week. Frankly and Monday figured out the case of the missing dirt!
We continued to read Wonder, and, again, had a few "run-ins" with Julian. We'll continue next week. Our Calgary downtown core on Minecraft is almost complete, thanks to our tireless grade 4 builders. We'll begin researching historical buildings, then building them in minecraft next week. Don't forget that there is no school tomorrow or Monday. Enjoy your extra long weekend! We worked on a math challenge question this morning, which involved helping Mr. Hewitt estimate how much area he needed to wash and wax in our classroom. Basically, since our class is not a regular rectangle, we had to use our skills to find the area of an irregular shape. We did great!
We also read another few chapters in wonder. Auggie is now in school, or at least the first day of school. We'll continue tomorrow. In the afternoon, we got together with our buddies to draw using numbers and letters - Muffalo Potato!! (Google it!) Then, we watched a Nature of Things documentary on Plants. It was called Smarty Plants...ha ha, David Suzuki, very funny! Recorded test tomorrow at 9Am - don't forget! Hello! We are in the middle of testing our multiplication knowledge. We figured out how to use the algorithm how to multiply. We're focusing on 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication, but some of us are challenging ourselves with 3 digits by 1 or 2 digits. In grade 4, you must be able to do 2x1 digit multiplication.
We worked on Wonder this afternoon. We're getting to know the characters, and are starting to figure out some of their personalities. It's a great book! We have a written music test on Thursday of this week. This afternoon, we also talked about how plants needs and our needs are fairly similar. We had a good debate over whether clothing, exercise, or technology is a need... A very full day. We began the day with recycling for the school, as we were away last thursday. Then, we "tested" our knowledge of irregular area. Tomorrow we move to 3x1 multiplication, then division.
In the afternoon, we spent some time on "Wonder", then Petroglyphs, and capped it off with a conversation about a plant's needs. We'll continue with all of those tomorrow. Please check the reminders at the bottom of this post, as many items have been added. Wow, what a fun day at the Glenbow. Thank you to all of the volunteers that make these experiences happen. We learned all about our natural resources, as well as the Blackfoot way of life.
Volunteer Tea is tomorrow morning. Please come by so we can recognize your hard work. If you are in musical theatre, please wear dark pants or jeans, as well as a bright coloured shirt with no logo. Have a great night! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students (Term 2): https://studio.code.org/sections/LIDSBR __________________________________________________ Reminders:
