We continued to work on our final projects for book club. Students had options on how to display their learning - please ask them what they chose.
We had an amazing presentation today from Green Calgary. They talked about landfills, and we stepped into the role of Junior engineers. We were challenged with designing and building a landfill that protected the ground water. Students did extremely well! Tonight is the Family Dance. There is no school tomorrow. Have a safe Halloween! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students:: http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
Today was jam packed. This morning we worked on a problem that involved using 4 fours. Basically, you have to use 4 fours to make all the numbers from 1 through 20. You can use any number operation (+, -, /, x) or anything else to make the numbers. For example: 4+4+4+4 = 16. Can you figure out the other numbers from 1 through 20?
Our last session of Book Club is tomorrow, then we start on our final project, which we'll discuss on Thursday. We continue to work hard on our Duolingo and mathletics. Today, a few students were "challenged" in Live Math by mr. V. Tomorrow is POWER Hour! See you tomorrow. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students:: http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
We're very close to finishing our Book Clubs. Tomorrow is our last day, then we're off to display our learning. We'll together decide what this looks like.
Tomorrow we'll resume our work on Alberta's regions, since we took a hiatus due to our Unicef Service Project. Please have a look at the reminders of the bottom on this page for updates. Have a great night. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students:: http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Reminders:
Book Clubs went very well this morning. After meeting with our teams, we watched a video about how Edmonton is attempting to divert waste from the landfills. We focused on its efforts to turn waste into Bio-Fuels. The video is on our website, under Waste and our World.
We also explored number concepts this morning, focusing on place value and understanding the relationships between numbers. We used many resources that are linked on our website, under math --> Understanding Numbers. This afternoon, we focused on our service project, and continued to make cards which will be sold at the Halloween Family Dance. All proceeds go to Unicef. There is no school tomorrow. Have a nice weekend! Today was our first day of Wasteless Wednesdays - we did fairly well, with only 21 pieces of garbage at the end of the day. We'll be tracking our results and looking for trends. Hopefully it's a downward trend.
This morning we worked on our Problem of the week. They are always posted on our website under math Resources --> Problem of the Week. Try it, they're always fun! We also had our Book Club meeting this morning, which is always the same routine: Read, Write, Reflect. Tomorrow is parent-teacher interviews. Go Jays! __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students:: http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Parent-Teacher Conferences are this week - Thursday, October 22 from 4-8pm and Friday, October 23 from 8-1pm. Today we had another session with our Book Clubs. Ask your child about an interesting fact they learned from their reading. I learned from our Recycling Book Club that a glass bottle would take 1,000,000 (Yes, that many zeroes) to decompose if left outside.
In the afternoon, we also continued to work on our Picture Book questioning task. Students were extremely focused! Tomorrow is Fun Lunch, and it's the start of our WasteLess Wednesdays. Basically, we are trying to think about our decisions when it comes to packaging our food. We'll be keeping track of our garbage over the next few Wednesdays, with the hope that we see a downward trend. This morning was a day of starting new tasks. We had our first Book Club meeting this morning, where we met together as a group, responded to some journal prompts, then reflected on our work. This book Club runs for only 2 weeks, and it's all about non-fiction topics related to the environment.
In the afternoon, we had our first session of our Picture Book task. Ask your child about this task. It will take us until Christmas Break, and involves reading picture books, formulating deep questions, then acting as the expert. We began working on our UNICEF cards. Today's card featured a birthday theme. We will be selling these homemade cards at the Halloween Family Dance. We also talked about Wasteless Wednesdays. Ask your child about this as well. Choir forms went home today, if you're child requested one. Family Dance and Book Fair forms went home on Friday. Have a great evening! Don't forget to vote...parents. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students:: http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week. Wow, a very productive Friday. As always, we begin our day with Boot Camp - Ms. Manser and Mrs. Bezugley were so impressed with our commitment!
Then, we tied up some loose ends with Art, with some people working on their name art and others working on drawing a Disney Character - today's tutorial was on Olaf from Frozen. It's amazing to see all of the drawing techniques that professional artists use. As promised, here are the links from today: Olaf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ9Bmzw3ims Mr Parr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLk-9ib0OVA Mr Parr has many more videos on his youtube channel, too! 2 Notices went home today - one about Book Fair and the other about the Halloween Family Dance. __________________________________________________ Link for PoWer Hour Students:: http://studio.code.org/sections/sgkjcx __________________________________________________ Parent-Teacher Conferences are next week.
