Question of the night: Have a great Break! Do you have any big plans?
Wow, what a day! We finished Ticket to Curlew today...it was a really great book, and taught us lots about the life of Alberta's settlers. We also had our last testing and presentation of our rube goldeberg creations. They were, of course, super creative... In the afternoon, we ended the day with a bit of a celebration, then, of course, a bit of dodgeball... Have a wonderful holiday break. We will see you in January! Be safe. We're back on January 9th! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What will your rube goldeberg machine be able to do?
Hello! And we're into our final week...with a bang, too! We started by learning a new 3D drawing technique called "Surface". Basically, the lower on the page you draw an object, the closer it looks to you. This is super useful for when we're drawing things like roads and rivers... We also worked a bit on spelling. We're learning about adding "R" to words typically changes the vowel sound found in the word...think "spot" and "sport". After recess, we worked together with the other grade 4 class to plan and start designing rube goldeberg machines. We'll work on these all this week, which is how we're getting excited about simple machines, our next science topic. Don't forget to bring in materials you'd like to use...and please remember that we're trying to really re-use materials. In the afternoon, it was coding time. We worked as a class on some loops and nested loops. Coding really gets our brains going...and sometimes ever our frustrations! We also worked on some of our mental math skills with multiplication. We used this simulation: Arithmetic! If you remember, please bring some decorating candy for a gingerbread house tomorrow - we're going to work together with our Kindie buddies in the afternoon. Sorry for not reminding everyone in class... ____________________________________________________ Upcoming Spirit Days! Question of the night: What are your weekend plans?
TGIF! Another great day of learning. We started the day with PE, where our two most nominated students from the week chose to play Fruit Salad, then a bit of dodgeball....always a student favourite! After PE, we got ourselves back into a learning mode by sharing in our weekly circle. We spent some of this time together to quickly study oral history, as a way of communication. The Blackfoot of Alberta did not have any written language, and so they relied (and rely) on oral history and storytelling. We'll be studying this more in the coming weeks. We are ever so close to finishing our read aloud, Ticket to Curlew. Only two chapters left, which we'll finish next week. Today, we also spent some time together as a grade 4 community exploring french. We looked a little bit at conjugating verbs, again through the use of stories. We finished the day with our weekly recycling jobs, then a bit of earned time. Have a great weekend! Check out below for some fun spirit days taking place next week... ____________________________________________________ Upcoming Spirit Days! Question of the night: Show your parents how to use foreshortening and shading.
Hello! The countdown is on...only a week left until our winter break... The learning continues though. This morning, we worked on one more art skill, Shading. This is the second skill in a series that will help us draw in 3-Dimensions. The first was foreshortening. It is super impressive to see our drawing skills coming along. This morning, we also watched the original"Lorax" short film. We compared and contrasted this film with the new one that was released a few years ago. In the afternoon, we spent some time with our kindergarten buddies, then worked a bit on our coding. It's very interesting to see us figuring out shortcuts to take in our codes... Please come by tonight for our Winter celebration. Don't forget to check out our door and mosaic bulletin board. ____________________________________________________ Making Memories Family Night On Thursday, December 14 from 6:30 - 7:30, please join us for an evening of fun and community building! Question of the night: What is one way you can communicate with another person and not use sound?
Hi All! What a whirlwind day. It felt like we were on overdrive the entire day! We began the day by reviewing some of the spelling patterns from this year. We worked on long & short vowel sounds, and some reasons why vowels are "forced" to be long. By knowing some of these reasons, it gives us hints as to how words are spelled. This morning, we completed the last of our lowercase vowels in cursive..."x". We move into uppercase after the break. This morning we also worked on a see-think-wonder. It was a very specific prompt about communicating through computers. After all, coding is just another language, just like English or spanish or sign-language. Take a look at the prompt below. This conversation led right into our next topic, which is...coding! We're first using code.org, then we'll look at using scratch or other platforms. We'll continue tomorrow. In the afternoon, we visited Mrs. Dennill, then Mrs. Cornford, and finally Mr. Muffalo...potato, that is. Please don't forget our making memories night. It's tomorrow night, beginning at 6:30pm! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Making Memories Family Night On Thursday, December 14 from 6:30 - 7:30, please join us for an evening of fun and community building! Question of the night: Post (at least) one interesting fact you learned in your product research today.
We began the day with our work on our product research. We made some excellent progress, and some of us are already thinking about how to make these linear cycles into circular cycles. I wonder how creative we will be in our solutions. In the morning, we also worked on our literacy within math. It sometimes sounds weird to think about mathematician and literacy, but everyone must communicate, and mathematicians are no different. We were each given a picture with shapes on it. One time we were the person giving the directions, other times we were the one taking the directions. It was frustrating, for sure, but really interesting to see how well can communicate without using sight. In the afternoon, we worked on our character development, but with a twist. Instead of thinking about things we like, or superpowers we want, we did the opposite. This made our characters very interesting... Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Making Memories Family Night On Thursday, December 14 from 6:30 - 7:30, please join us for an evening of fun and community building! Question of the night: Please post if you are planning to attend our family night this Thursday?
Hi! What a day back at school. We started the morning with yet another See-Think-Wonder. The prompt is below. This was an interesting picture, which really facilitated much discussion. In the morning, we also began to decorate our class a bit. I'm going to leave it at that, since the full display will be ready to go for our making memories night. We're super excited to share our creations with you... We continued to work on our spelling, and this week's "rule" involves "ie" and "ei". It's funny, some of these words make a long "a" sound, even though they don't have an "a" in them. Here are some words to practice this week: achieve, weigh, receive, believe, piece, either, eight, height, diet, their, neither, chief. In the afternoon, we worked a bit on our product research. We watched a quick video on the circular economy, which is exactly what we're going to research and try to create for our own "problems" that we've discussed. We didn't have time to start our independent research, but we'll do that tomorrow. Please check the post below for more information on the making memories night. Also, please whisper Flowchart to mr. V tomorrow morning. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Making Memories Family Night On Thursday, December 14 from 6:30 - 7:30, please join us for an evening of fun and community building! Question of the night: Tell us about the character you created today...
Hello! Today was an amazing day! We started the day by brainstorming how to create new characters. This is just the first step in a process. We'll look at this next week, as well. After recess, we had an Independent Math Working Period, where we finished studying area and perimeter. We're all on different parts, but most of us are in the final minecraft stage. In the afternoon, we met our kindie buddies to make some holiday cards. We also started to learn some art techniques. Today was foreshortening...which is used during 3D drawing. Here's the video - we watched to the 10 minute mark: Secret city. No school tomorrow. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What place and problem are you researching for our waste project?
Hello all!! We had a great day of learning today. We started this morning with our historian timeline. We studied the dates that we each have that are relevant to Calgary's history, then we put them in ascending order. We'll work together over the next couple of days to place each of them on the timeline. After that, we worked on our fatberg project. Well, not exactly just the fatberg, but our research project on a problem that might affect a Calgary place or business. For example, we brainstormed about a waste problem that the Lake Bonavista hockey arena might have: Arena --> concession that sells food --> Sells Chicken Wings --> the wings come on a paper plate --> lots of paper plates go in the garbage. So, in our final study of waste and our world, we've been challenged with focusing on a place in calgary, and a waste problem they may have. We'll them look at the problem, then try to solve it, from beginning to end, and maybe come up with a better solution. For math, we're really gearing up our mental math work on multiplication. Some of us finished our final area and perimeter assessment, while others worked on playing multiplication squares - always a favourite in our class. In the afternoon, we visited with Mrs. Dennill, then Mrs. Cornford, then had our grade 2 buddies teach us a new math game. (Here's your secret message...Whisper "Fatberg" to Mr. V tomorrow morning for 2 super student tickets). It was a really fun game, and it involved alot of mental math too, addition and subtraction, in this case. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ The POWerful Book Club will be meeting at lunch on Tuesday December 5. Student’s should bring their lunch and their book. Question of the night: Thoughts on the Fatberg? Besides that it's gross, of course...
Hello! We started the day with a See-think-Wonder on a different style of picture...a fatberg! huh, what? Yes, that's right, a Fatberg! Take a look at the bottom of this post for the prompt. We'll be using this hook as a way to get our final thoughts on Waste & our World... We continued to work on our gardening task in math. Yes, that's right, Mr. V is getting the grade 4s to do his backyard planning for free! In the afternoon, we read a bit of Ticket to Curlew, then worked some on our mental math skills. Here are the links we used: Area BUilder and Arithmetic. ____________________________________________________ The POWerful Book Club will be meeting at lunch on Tuesday December 5.
