Question of the night:
This morning, we continued to work on our design thinking challenge. We're working with reflection and mirrors to try to solve a problem for Mrs. Blanchard. We're not quite there, but we're working on it. We also had a great presentation on the different parts of the ear, including a spelling "test" mimicking a person that is hard of hearing. It was an ear-opening experience! We finished the day with some practice time for the school concert. Have a safe weekend. Please continue to practise the songs on D2L, especially "Can you Feel the Love tonight?" Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. All of the homework is tracked within D2L under "Discussions". Essentially, students are tasked with engaging in dialogue with their fellow classmates about books they may be reading. There will be weekly questions to guide their discussions. The expectation is that students post at least 2 times per week. Please contact me with any questions. Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: See if you can re-create our experiment with a tea cup and a penny to show refraction.
Wow, today just flew by. Lots of our classmates were in Science Fair all day. The rest of us explored a couple of concepts with light. First, we continued to look at refraction. We used a small, shallow, opaque teacup with a penny to demonstrate that light refracts in water. After that, we explored reflection a bit more, then went to the idea lab for a design thinking challenge. We'll be going back tomorrow. We finished handwriting today with uppercase "F". We'll continue to practise it throughout the year, since practice makes perfect! We also spent some time judging science fair projects with our buddies, then hung out with them in their class. We're great leaders! See you tomorrow. Please continue to practise the songs on D2L, especially "Can you Feel the Love tonight?" Question of the night: If you're having a bath tonight, fill the tub and, from outside of it, put your arm in the water (just like we put a pencil in a cup today). What do you observe?
A day full of science discoveries. We began by making some conclusions about reflection and how the surfaces affect the quality of the reflection. We found out that opaque, flat, shiny materials reflect light the best. Think of a mirror... We looked at how a crumpled piece of tinfoil reflects light in all different directions, which makes it really tough to see the reflection. After discussing those results, we studied if light can "bend". We used a pencil and a glass of water, and noticed that the pencil looks "out of place" when you put it in the water. Try it with your arm in the bathtub...we briefly talked about how that is called "refraction". We're going to look back at reflection tomorrow...stay tuned for a design thinking challenge. We finished Wonder this morning. What an amazing ending, filled with many heart-warming kindness. I wonder if we'll continue on with this book somehow this school year. In the afternoon, we learned uppercase "T", then travel planned. Most groups are getting close to finishing this project, and are currently adding up their costs. Please continue to practise the songs on D2L, especially "Can you Feel the Love tonight?" Question of the night: How was Power Hour? What are you doing in it?
Wow, the day flew by! We started with our Tuesday Morning circle, where we reflected on the following questions: -I can show that I care for others by.... -When we work together we need to... -I get into trouble when... -If I could live anywhere in the world it would be... In music, we continue to work on our pieces for the school concert. The mC's will be getting together this week to work on our script for the performance. Please continue to practise the songs on D2L, especially "Can you Feel the Love tonight?" The rest of the morning, we continued to study the properties of light, beginning with reflection. We studied whether different materials reflect light differently. We used the following: a mira, a mirror, plastic, metal spoon, cardboard, crumpled tinfoil, and smooth tinfoil.. We'll examine the results tomorrow. In the afternoon, we're close to finishing our uppercase cursive letters. Today was "S". only two more to go! We also enjoyed power hour this afternoon. Please comment on how it's going. Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night:
Welcome back! We started the day with music. We continued to practice our music from our spring concert. These are posted on D2L...please practice at home. We're still studying the properties of light. Today we looked at the amount of light certain materials allow through. Tomorrow we'll look at reflecting surfaces. We're getting close to finishing wonder. Mr. Tushman just delivered his speech at graduation, and talked about how is always better to be a little kinder than necessary. We'll finish this week. In the afternoon, we learned uppercase "G", then did a see-think-wonder with an old picture of Calgary after the fire of the late 1800s. We'll continue our travel planning on Wednesday. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: Sorry, I forgot the question yesterday. Here's one for today: Tell us what you're doing this weekend, and are you looking forward to it.
We had our first flashlight friday this morning. Please remember to bring flashlights for next friday - we do have some extra ones here at school, if you need it. This morning, we worked on Scale Art. We worked on finishing our 1 x 1 cm grid, then worked on making a 2 x 2 cm grid. Next week, we'll work on scaling our picture to double the size. Stay tuned. We continued to work on our school concert music - drumming, dancing, and singing. Please continue to listen to the music on D2L. Have a great weekend. Be safe! Don't forget your D2L homework. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night:
Today we started to study some of the properties of light. We began with the question, "Does light travel in a straight line?" We performed a few experiments to test our hypothesis of whether light travels in a straight line. We got to use some cool light boxes, which we'll continue to use over the next few weeks. In the afternoon, we finished watching mathnet, read wonder, and had some PE time with our buddies. The days just seem to fly! Tomorrow is "where what you want day, including PJs", which I guess is no different than any other day...so, wear what you want, PJS if you want. Tomorrow is also Flashlight Friday, so please bring a flashlight if you have one - you'll get it back! Don't forget your D2L homework. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: Find three sources of light in your house, and tell us if they'e natural or artificial.
Wow, what a day! We're continuing to study light & Sound in science, focusing on light right now. We studied the difference between natural and artificial light sources today. We also read Wonder in the morning. Auggie describes a "seismic" shift in the way people are treating him at school. We're getting very close to the end of the book. In the afternoon, we talked about travel planning, and said that we'll have 3 more research sessions on this project. Then, we'll present our plans. We also watched a quick video on an ice road between fort McMurray and Fort Chipewyan. It was intense! We learned uppercase cursive "L" this afternoon. Don't forget your D2L homework. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: Have your parents write an uppercase cursive "Q" word. Post if they get it right. Can you find any words that have "qu" but don't have a vowel next.
Hello! What a great day. We began the day with a circle where we discussed how to make our class a better place and how we feel when we're welcomed by our friends. Thanks for everyone for being so open. In music, we're working on our school concert music, "Jambo" and "Can you Feel the Love tonight?". We'll keep practising in class, but please feel free to practice at home as well. The songs are on D2L. We worked today on identifying light sources today. We scoured the school for different sources of light, which we'll debrief tomorrow. We'll be moving into classifying light into natural and artificial tomorrow. In the afternoon, we learned uppercase "q" in handwriting...it looks really odd - check the question of the night. After that, we read wonder, which is, sadly, coming to an end. Auggie just got a new dog after he came home from his school camping trip. POWer hour started this afternoon as well. Hopefully everyone is excited about their groups. Don't forget your D2L homework. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: In your opinion, what is our most important sense? Tell us why?
This morning, we had a conversation about our senses, then chatted about the importance of each. Our new science unit is "Senses", which specifically encompasses hearing (grade 3s) and Sight (grade 4s, Light & Sound). We'll be working together as an entire learning community during this unit. In the afternoon, we continued with our travel planning. We're moving towards costing out our trip, including flights, hotels, and car rentals. We'll be working on presentations this week. Please remember your homework. There is a new discussion forum ready to go. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework.
