Question of the night: What are you doing this weekend?
This morning was our last Book CLub meeting. we'll move into displaying our learning next week. We began to work on our scale art this morning. We started by constructing a 1 cm x 1cm grid on top of our wildflower pictures. We'll be working on doubling that scale next week. We finished the day by practising our drumming, dancing, and singing for our school African Concert. Please remember that the music and videos are posted on D2L. Have a safe weekend! ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. All of the homework is tracked within D2L under "Discussions". Essentially, students are tasked with engaging in dialogue with their fellow classmates about books they may be reading. There will be weekly questions to guide their discussions. The expectation is that students post at least 2 times per week. Please contact me with any questions. Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour Sept 2016 Grades 1 & 2 -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Grades 3 to 6 -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: Please log into D2L and reply to some posts from your fellow students.
A great day of learning. We began by working in our book clubs this morning - only one more day to go... After that, we practised some of the songs from the school concert. They are posted in D2L, so please take a look and sing along. We spent some time on D2l this morning writing and replying to posts about our home reading books. We're getting in to the habit of editing our work before posting comments - we're not all quite there yet! Please remember that you must post at least twice per week, and have a look to see if people have replied to your post. We read wonder this morning. It was a tough read today because Auggie was called some pretty terrible names by some students from another school. But, the good thing is that some of his "enemies" from school came to his aid. That was great to read! In the afternoon, we worked a bit on travel planning, then worked with our buddies in the gym during gymnastics. We were excellent role models, as usual! Have a great evening! ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: What was the most memorable part of our scientist's visit today?
Hi! This morning, Scientist Jill came to visit. She taught us about all types of simple machines, including pulleys, inclined planes, wheels, axles, and gears. We had a great time exploring and learning about these machines, and how they make our lives easier, even if they are "simple". In the afternoon, we again worked on our travel plans, where most of us are moving onto the presentation stage. Most groups have figured out where they are visiting and what they are doing in those places. We're moving into prices, then into presenting our trips...stay tuned. Don't forget your D2L homework! A new week's discussion has been posted. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: Today we learned that "YYC" refers to Calgary. Do you know of any other codes that refer to cities around the world? Maybe somewhere you've travelled?
We began the day with a sharing circle, then moved right into music. We're quickly moving along towards our school concert. Stay tuned for more info! After music, we worked on book clubs. We're getting used to working independently on these, which will really serve us well when we start our next ones. After recess, we talked a little about travel planning, brainstormed some solutions to possible problems, then studied the ear (grade 3) and light emitting sources (grade 4). It seems like something big is going to happen in Wonder soon. JM in our class used the term "foreshadowing", which means hinting towards something taking place. Our afternoons are following a pretty consistent routine: handwriting (J), travel planning, and PE. Today was no different - we're running into some hiccups while planning our travels, which is making it a great learning experience. Don't forget your D2L homework! A new week's discussion has been posted. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: What part of the show "The Great Math Mystery" surprised you the most?
This morning, we started by watching a NOva documentary called "The Great Math Mystery". This documentary showed us the many places we see math in real life. We took a trip to the library, then we worked on our scale art. We just started by choosing the flowers that we'll be drawing, then scaling to double the size. We'll work more next week. Have a great weekend! Don't forget your D2L homework! ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: If you could travel to any country in the world, where would you go and what would you do?
Book clubs started this morning. Students completed their first reading session today, and will resume next week. We planned out how much we have to read every day to make sure we finish by the end of next week. After every session, we reflect on what we've learned, and how it applies to our lives. We also worked on a math pre-assessment test today, looking specifically at place value and expanded notation. We'll be looking over those results soon, then talking about how to move forward. We're getting close to finishing "wonder", and Auggie has just left on an overnight nature retreat with his classmates. He was a bit nervous about it, but went anyway. In the afternoon, we continued to work on our travel plans...wow, it's really expensive to fly to Tunisia, as some of the grade 3s learned today. Power hour forms are due tomorrow, please. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. Question of the night: What is one activity you have planned to do on your trip around Alberta or the 4 countries?
We began the day with the introduction of our book clubs. We're starting off with short, non-ficiton books for this club. The grade 4s will be looking at topics surrounding waste and our world, while the 3s will look at animals and lifecycles. These book clubs are meant to be collaborative, where students read, discuss, and reflect together. This is our first one of the year. We then looked at place value again, and started to break down numbers using expanded notation (e.g. 3348 = 3000 + 300 + 40 + 8). Students need to know this in order to understand addition and subtraction, especially involving carrying and exchanging. That's the end goal, but for now, we're working on simply breaking these numbers into their parts. In the afternoon, we learned uppercase "H" in handwriting, then started working on our travel plans. The grade 4s will be planning trips around Alberta, making sure to see all 6 physical regions. The grade 3s will be planning trips to the 4 countries we've been studying. We're currentyl figuring out what we want to see in these places, then we'll figure out how to get there, and how much it's going to cost. Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. All of the homework is tracked within D2L under "Discussions". Essentially, students are tasked with engaging in dialogue with their fellow classmates about books they may be reading. There will be weekly questions to guide their discussions. Question of the night: Make sure to log into D2L and post about your book.
Wow, a great day back from our winter break. We caught up with our classmates and started right back into learning. In the morning, we had music with Ms. Dennill, where we're getting prepared for our coming concerts. More info will follow. In the morning, we also got started on some place value work in math, then finished it off with a few rounds of guess my number. We'll continue with it tomorrow, and perhaps move into explanded number notation. In the afternoon, we learned uppercase "E" in handwriting, talked about power Hour (here's the website), read "Wonder", and had PE. Wow, a full afternoon indeed. Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. All of the homework is tracked within D2L under "Discussions". We quickly logged in at the end of the day, but it was somewhat rushed, so we'll re-visit tomorrow.
