Question of the night: For What colour of cusinaire rods were you trying to trade? give an example of a trade you made, if you remember it.
February has come and gone, and tomorrow we're already into March. This morning, to celebrate the start of baseball season, we began reading a story about Marcenia Lyle, the first female to play professional baseball for an all-male team. We used the book to model reading strategies. We'll finish it tomorrow. After recess, we built a makeshift trading post in the classroom, but instead of pelts, we were trading cusinarie rods (or, numbers, to be exact). This type of exercise gets us to build our mental math skills, which really helps when completing addition and subtraction problems. Tomorrow, we're going to work with cusinaire rods, then change to base 10 blocks. In the afternoon, we watched a video on sound. Here is a link, if you're interested: Haunted House. We're getting quite close to the end of our senses unit. This afternoon was also the power hour showcase for this sesssion. It was great to see many parents and students exploring the other power hours around the school. Have a good night! Please note that tax receipts for lunch supervision costs have gone home. Please make sure you received your receipt. If not, please contact me or Mrs. Pulfer at the office. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What are the hammer, anvil, and stirrup bones?
This morning, we conducted an exploration to test whether sound travels well through solids. We used spoons and string, with the string acting as a type of headphone. If you get a chance, try it out at home. In math, we began talking about the traditional addition algorithm today. The algorithm, which we defined as a set of steps to solve a problem, is a very efficient way of finding the sum of numbers. BUT, this only works if you understand how it works. We'll continue tomorrow. IN the afternoon, we did a bit of a spelling/handwriting test using some words from hearing and sound. Then, we learned more about the structure of the ear, and where all of its parts are located. We very briefly looked at famous canals around the world, and related that to the ear canal...a bit of a stretch, but it works! Field trip forms for the Glenbow museum went home today. Please complete and return aSAP. Our trip is on March 9th. Have a good night.

Question of the night: In "One Grain of Rice", how many grains of rice did Rani have, in total, after 14 days? Is there a pattern that could help you?
Wow, another day full of learning and discovery. In the morning, we explored the recorder. I hear from Mrs. Dennill that we're really quite good. After recorders, we talked about our shadows findings from last week. We used our compass readings from last week to figure out which way the sun rises and how it "moves" in the sky. After our shadows talk, we changed gears and looked at sound pitch and vibrations using tuning forks. We explored the forks in water, then looked at how the vibrations connect with frequency and pitch. It was quite the morning! We continued to work on binary code this morning, as well. We used a different strategy of addition (expanded addition). Please talk to me about the specifics. In the afternoon, we had a handwriting challenge, then read the book "One Grain of Rice". It was interesting how the pattern in this book is very similar to the pattern from binary code. In fact, the growing pattern is exactly the same. I've attached the last page of the book below. Our challenge was to figure out how many grains of rice in total did Rani have at the end of 14 days? See if you can find the pattern. TGIF tomorrow. Question of the night: What are you studying in Power Hour?
Wow, welcome back! This morning, we started with some recorder time with Mrs. Dennill. Our Kung Fu booklets will be ready on Thursday, and it will also be posted on D2L. Good Luck, musicians! We also continued to talk about sound this morning. We went on a sound scavenger hunt around the school looking for different types of sounds. We'll talk about pitch tomorrow, which is perfect for recorders. We started to use open number lines for addition this morning, which we'll talk some more about tomorrow. Tomorrow we'll also talk about binary numbers, which leads to some addition, as well. We'll be working on some addition algorithms later in the week, too. In the afternoon, we had Power Hour. Don't forget that next week is the power hour showcase. Oh, and please wear pink tomorrow as part of our Anti-Bullying campaign. Bye! ____________________________________________________ Kindness starts here Hi it’s the give power hour. We want to let you know about an upcoming event. On Wednesday February 22 we are trying to create a sea of pink. In the afternoon the grade 5/6 are hosting an assembly at 1: 15 pm, please remember to wear pink. Stand up to bullies not just on February 22 but all the time. Remember Kindness starts here. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What did you learn today about testing soils?
Wow, what a day! This morning, we had the opportunity to get our hands dirty with our very own Professional Agrologist. Mr. Brake came to talk to us about how to classify soils, and he even brought in some samples, with which we got to explore. Of course, one of the testing tools agrologists use is their teeth, so some of our more "brave" (or maybe we should use another word to describe them) students tried to test the sand content in the soils using their teeth. So yes, if your child comes home and says they ate dirt, they actually mean, "ate dirt". The rest of the morning was spent looking at natural, artificial, warning, etc. types of sounds. We played a bit of a guess the sound game, at which most of us did exceptionally well. Here's the website we used: SOunds. Nobody, sadly, knew Woody the Woodpecker, though. Today, we also had the opportunity to study our shadows in the afternoon, and also test our sundials. Our shadows were smaller in closer to noon and were facing a different direction compared to the morning. Wow! Please note that a very important assignment went home today. It is about our family's heritage. Please contact me with any questions. It is due on March 13th, so there is quite some time for your family to gather information. No school until Tuesday. Have a great long, long, long weekend, then we'll see you on Tuesday. Happy Family Day! ____________________________________________________ Kindness starts here Hi it’s the give power hour. Question of the night: How long was your shadow this morning?
Hello. This morning, we began to look at the relationship between our shadows and the time of day. Our first observation was at 10am. Unfortunately, the sun went behind some clouds in the afternoon, which made it a not very exciting (or accurate) reading. That's the reality of science - sometimes, the variables change and there is nothing you can do about it. We'll try to get some readings tomorrow around noon, to check whether our shadows grow or shrink throughout the day. We also talked about sound this morning, specifically looking at how sound travels from the air to our brains. We watched a few videos about sound frequencies, listened to a Mr. Parr song, then looked at the relationship between the size of an animal's ears and their hearing. Bats have really BIG ears! A big thank you to GB for the pictures of Jack Singer Concert Hall. It was interesting to see why it was mostly made of wood, and why some of the wood on the ceiling is pointed in different directions... In the afternoon, we worked a bit on handwriting, then exchanged valentine's day gifts, while writing positive messages to each other. After that, it was POWER hour and the day was over...it really flew by! Walking wednesday tomorrow, and the last day of the week for students...Teacher's Convention on Wednesday and Thursday. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: What are some differences between Mumbai and Alberta that affect quality of life?
This morning in our senses work, we began to focus on hearing, as opposed to sight (or light). We simulated sound waves by dropping different objects in to water, then studied the waves they produce. We looked at how they "bounce" off the sides, too. We'll continue tomorrow, by looking at the different parts of the ear. we used some sound simulations from the University of Colorado. Feel free to have a look: Sound simulations. We also continued to work on addition, by relating it to open number lines. We'll continue tomorrow with some practice. In the afternoon, we began focusing on the cultural similarities and differences between India and Alberta. We'll be focusing on the concept of quality of life, and began by looking at how Mumbai (india) deals with its garbage. We talked about some stark differences between ours and their landfills. Please remember your recorder forms, if you need one.
Question of the night: While you're enjoying the sunshine this weekend, take a look at how your shadow changes. Check the direction and size of shadow...you'll be amazed.
Wow, amazing performances this week! the students were amazing, and the feedback we've received has been so supportive. Thank you to all of the staff for their hardwork, especially MS. Konno and Mrs. Dennill for their dedication and talent! This morning, we started the day with some Scale Art. Some of us are getting close to completing the art, while some others have needed to restart to make sure that our grids are accurately measured. We had some time in the library this morning. Some of us were very excited to read the alberta and world atlas, so we decided to watch a nature of things about geologic journey around the pacific plate. That's was our first flick for "Friday Flix". Every Friday, we'll watch a flick that matches our learning for the week. Please remember to bring money for recorders, if you need one. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: Describe your musical device. What did it sound like? This morning, we explored how light and shadows can play games with on our eyes and our brains. We looked at some common optical illusions. The ones we looked at are at the bottom of this post. Enjoy! We also began to explore sound, which led us to the IDEA Lab, where we tested different materials to make different sounds. We'll build on this exploration over the next few weeks, beginning with how humans and animals hear different sounds. Wow, what an amazing dress rehearsal we had this Afternoons. The "m-Z" group performed for the "A-L" group and a few parents. It was incredible. Tonight is the performace...Yellow, Orange, Dark Green or red. Long sleeves. No logos. Black Pants. That's the dress code for tonight's concert. Doors open at 6pm. Concert starts at 6:30pm. We enjoyed some leadership time with our buddies. We're such great leaders! Bye for now! Don't forget to check out the optical illusions beneath this post! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
