Question of the night: Write one word to describe ms. B.
We had to say good bye to ms. B today. She has succesfully completed her practicum, and now has only one left beginning in February. We'll all miss her welcoming smile, and wish her all the best. We hope she'll come to visit us soon... This morning, we played a bit of pictionary, then took apart our landfills and lego mindstorms. We'll use the mindstorms again next year. We ended the day with a little party. We watched Arthur Christmas, too! Have an excellent holiday. Be safe. We'll see you all on January 3rd. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour Sept 2016 Grades 1 & 2 -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Grades 3 to 6 -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: Watch this video with your family (Leachate). What is leachate, and why is it bad?
Hi! Another day, another indoor recess. I think everyone is beginning to get a bit squirmy about all these indoor recesses. We had our final caroling session this morning, which was really fun! After that, we talked about the difference between a landfill and a dump. We had some conversations about leachate, and why it is so important to keep that out of our groundwater. Then, we attempted to build landfills, with the challenge of keeping leachate from seeping through. It was a great way to do some design thinking, since we had to design, test, re-design, test... In the afternoon, we got together with our kindergarten buddies to build gingerbread houses. Then, it was PE and, of course, dodgeball Thursday! We have a celebration tomorrow. See you then!
Question of the night: Not a question...only homework. Practicing juggling at home, then teach your parents.
This morning, we worked on finishing up some of our tasks. We also, enjoyed building and programming our mindstorms, eventhough we had some technical difficulties with ipads. We'll do this again tomorrow! In the afternoon, we sung, read wonder, then played omnican ball in PE. Oh, and don't forget a visit from Santa during singing. Tomorrow, we're decorating gingerbread houses with our kindie buddies. Please bring a bag of assorted candies for your house... See you tomorrow! ____________________________________________________ Hi, It’s the GIVE power hour. The charity we have chosen this month is the Calgary Drop-in center. We continued with caroling this morning. after that, we started growing crystals using borax, food colouring, and hot water. Let's see how they turn out. We also made some christmas cards to donate to the drop-in centre. The students were extremely thoughtful and empathetic in their messages. In the afternoon, we worked on finishing a few tasks, then continued to work on lego mindstorms. We'll (hopefully) be programming tomorrow, if the computers cooperate! Question of the night: Tell us about your story robe. What's one family tradition that you think is unique to your family?
Wow, 1 week left before our break. We started talking about celebrations and traditions from around the world, especially here in Alberta. We linked this to our own family traditions, which we then documented on a "story Robe", similar to the aboriginals. We'll continue on it this week. We continued to work on our lego mindstorms this morning. Students have been extremely focused while collecting inventory for their bots. Most have started building, and some have started programming. We'll discuss some challenges tomorrow. In the afternoon, we did some caroling in the gym, then science, then danced away in PE. Ms. Mosher taught us some tap, and TD did an incredible Irish Dancing routine. Keep warm. PS. Don't forget pajama day on Thursday and our class celebration on Friday. ____________________________________________________ Hi, It’s the GIVE power hour. Question of the night: If we had a class elf-on-the-shelf, what would you name it?
It's Friday and still really cold! We started the day by reading a couple chapters in Wonder. They were sad chapters about Auggie's dog, Darth Daisy. After talking about science, we had a great concert by OK's "Gido", or Grampa. He played some traditional christmas songs, as well as some traditional ukrainian folk songs. It was amazing to hear the fiddle and the accordion. Thank you to Gido for sharing his musical talents! Mrs. Dennill came by to teach us some art this morning, which we'll finish next week. Oh, and report cards went home today. Please remember to bring back your signed envelopes so can re-use them next time. Stay Warm. Be safe. See you Monday! ____________________________________________________ Hi, It’s the GIVE power hour. The charity we have chosen this month is the Calgary Drop-in center. A full day...indoors, again! We started the day with music, then science. The 3s continue with rocks, while the 4s talked about waste and how to make better decisions. In wonder, we're starting to notice a change in Auggie. He seems to be enjoying school, even with his new hearing aids. It's amazing to hear the discussions were having about this book. We're hoping to finish before the break, but may not. In the afternoon, we started working together with Ms. Mosher's class on lego mindstorms. First step: inventory the pieces to make sure we've got them all. We'll work together all next week, as well. We'll also be coding some challenges for our robots next week. What a great day! The students were extremely focused all day, even with having indoor recesses all week. We started with an independent work Period, or IWP as we call it. Students all worked on completing some tasks that we have outstanding. We worked independently for about an hour - amazing! After recess and flex mat groups, we continued with wonder. We're getting close to the end. It's amazing how most students' attitude towards August have changed. In the afternoon, the grade 4s collected garbage...yep, you read that right, then they categorized the garbage into organics, plastics, paper, cardboard, and other. They'll be tracking their results and teaching about them. The grade 3s worked on rock investigations. Keep warm... ____________________________________________________ Hi, It’s the GIVE power hour. Question of the night: What word did you chose for our word wall, and what does the word mean?
Another full day of learning. We started by having a great presentation on the materials which are used to build skis. Thank you to GB for his research and presentation. After the presentation, we had music with Mrs. Dennill. Before recess, Ms. Gray tok the grade 4s on a walk around the school to talk about looking and observing closely, while the grade 3s stuck around the classroom to investigate the properties of rocks nad minerals. After recess, we had math groups, then ended the morning with some dancing...in PE, that is! We're starting to learn a new dance routine. In the afternoon, we had an author visit, where we learned about choices. After that, we began working on our geography word wall, and most people were able to finish their first chosen word. Please remember to dress warmly, as the entire week will (likely) be blue days. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Hi, It’s the GIVE power hour. Hi. Yikes, it's cold out there! This morning, we played 25 train in math, and a few of us even figured out a strategy to win every time. We'll talk about it some more tomorrow. Then, we played bingo, or lotto, in french. We're making sure we can recall numbers from 1-50. If you need refreshers, please take a look at MMe. Pallesen's website.. In the afternoon, which just flew by, was handwriting "z", Wonder, then danced the afternoon away in PE. Please dress warmly...it's going to be a cold week.
