Question of the night: Describe what your science exploration looked like this morning. What did you find out?
Wow, what an amazing dress rehearsal we had this morning. The "A-L" group performed for the "m-Z" group and a few parents. It was incredible. Tonight is the performace...Yellow, Orange, Dark Green or red. Long sleeves. No logos. Black Pants. That's the dress code for tonight's concert. Doors open at 6pm. Concert starts at 6:30pm. The rest of the morning was spent on exploration of light and shadows. We worked with few guidelines, and tried to make the most incredible light phenomenon we could. After that, we had to explain whether the light was reflecting, refracting, both or neither. It was a great exploration. We again talked about shadows and how they are cast behind opaque objects. In the afternoon, we continue to master our handwriting. If you want, get your child to randomly choose a passage in a book, then copy it using handwriting. Enjoy! We put the finishing touches on our travel plans, with presentations set for next week. Oh, we also finished our mathnet case of the week - the case of the missing air... We'll see some of you tonight, then everyone tomorrow. We'll try to test and calibrate our sundials tomorrow, as well as measure our shadows. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: How does a sundial work? how is it related to shadows?
Good Day! Another day, another indoor recess. It has been a cold week. Please make sure to dress warmly, as there is a possibility that we'll be going outside tomorrow... This morning, we built sundials. We didn't have the chance to test them outside. We can do that tomorrow, hopefully. In the afternoon, we had power hour. We're getting close to the end of our power hour for this term...wow, it's really flying! We have a dress rehearsal tomorrow morning at 9am. Parents are welcome! Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
Question of the night: where do you see the number 30 at your house? It can be anywhere... Wow, February 6th already! We began this morning by practising our dance and drumming routine for the concert. We're very excited to perform this week! After our practice, we looked at shadows, and specifically, how shadows are cast. We studied the relationships between opaque, translucent, and transparent objects and the shadows they cast. We'll continue to work on shadows this week, and will specifically think about how we use shadows to our benefit, say, using them to tell time. We ended today's lesson by watching a few cool videos about shadow puppets. Here they are: Shadow Puppet Show How to Make Shadow Puppets We continued to work with open number lines this morning, specifically working on making sure that we understand the scale of numbers. Please let me know if you have questions, and I'll be able to explaing more fully. In the afternoon, we worked on handwriting sentences (any random sentence out of the book you're reading will do), then we talked about telescopes and how they use lenses to reflect and refract light. We began to watch a NOVA about the world's most famous telescope, the Hubble Space telescope...who knew that the hubble telescope wears glasses! I've attached a copy of the program here: NOVA - Invisible Universe Revealed Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Below are some spelling words, by grade, for this week. Question of the night: DO you remember what the term "Difference" means in math? What operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) does it use?
Wow, February already! Thank you to Ms. Craig who came in for Mr. V on MOnday and Tuesday this week... Today, we started off talking about lenses, both concave and convex. We even talked about that funny sign on your car's side mirror: "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear". We watched Bill Nye's episode on Optics (hmm, why is an eye doctor called an optometrist...does it have something to do with lenses?), which re-enforced some of the concepts about reflection, refraction, convex and concave. We love Bill Nye! In the morning, we continued to work on our African pottery art. They are amazing! We also talked about ordering numbers, ie. putting them in their right spots on a number line. No, it doesn't mean ordering them online, as CM suggested! We briefly went to the Idea Lab this afternoon to look at a really cool convex mirror and talk a little about angles. Please continue to practise the songs on D2L, especially "Can you Feel the Love tonight?" Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Over the next few months, students will have some ongoing home reading homework. All of the homework is tracked within D2L under "Discussions". Essentially, students are tasked with engaging in dialogue with their fellow classmates about books they may be reading. There will be weekly questions to guide their discussions. The expectation is that students post at least 2 times per week. Please contact me with any questions. Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour January 2017 Camel Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Lion Group -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ Reminders:
