Question of the night: Name as many places you can think of that are in Alberta...
TGIF! We started the day with PE, then moved right into our weekly circle. This morning, we also had an independent work period, where we caught up on some of our priorities from this week. We've got lots of things on the go right now, so we needed some time to catch our collective breath and work towards completing some tasks. We worked with our fellow grade 4s on our french. We're working on deciphering meaning when we're not able to understand all of the words spoken or written. We finished our day with some earned time, which we really earned this week with the weather! Field trip forms for Telus Spark have gone home. Please return them, signed, ASAP. Have a great weekend! ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: What did you attempt to make in our "Brazilian Art" lesson today? What was difficult about it?
Another day, another indoor recess! Wow, was it cold... We started the day by looking, again, at ancient egyptian numbers. We wrote out a few, figured out that the order doesn't matter, then made up our own number system. We figured out that all number systems must have a "1" unit of measure. Actually, that's the only thing they really need - everything else just makes things easier. Of course, we're not going to use the ancient egyptian number system this year, so we also watched a quick intro video for place value. It is here: Place Value After recess, we studied literacy in art. That may sound complicated, but, basically, we used one of Mr. V's (super) old art books from when he was a kid, and completed a couple crafts from it. Well, with one huge catch...the books are in portuguese and none of us know how to speak or read it. Good thing there were lots of pictures that we could use. We'll work on this again tomorrow! In the afternoon, we were our super, amazing buddy-selves again. We had to teach our kindie buddies how to log into the computer and change their passwords. After that, we interviewed our buddies and uploaded the video into IRIS. If that sounds like alot of work, you're right! We were up to the challenge, though, and did amazingly... Of course, no day would be complete without some PE at the end of the day. We start with the gymnastics equipment next week. Field trip forms for Telus Spark have gone home. Please return them, signed, ASAP. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: While you are typing this, look around the room and name (at least) 7 things you see.
Whoa, what a day! We began with our final research session on our circular economy problem. We're now into the phase of displaying our learning. It has been interesting to read some of our innovative solutions to excessive garbage. After our research session, we worked a bit on spelling, focusing on sounds. We reviewed some spelling patterns that make "AR" and "or" sounds. This week's work will be based on "ER" sounds, which doesn't necessarily mean words that have "ER" in them. One example we used was "Disturb".... After recess, we did our daily (or semi-daily) work on mental math in multiplication. We're getting pretty confident with out multiplication up to 6x6. We also worked a bit on place value, then used the ancient egyptian number system as an example of a system that does not use place value. The basics of their number system is attached at the bottom of this post. In the afternoon, we visited Mrs. Dennill, then Mrs. Cornford, then finished the day with a little bit of "Owls in the Family". Be prepared to do some art tomorrow, with a very important twist... By for now! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Tell us, at least, 3 things you read today. Be creative...they don't have to be just books.
Welcome Back! We hit the ground running this morning, with some journaling about ourselves in 2018. We called the page, "me in 2018", and we had to think about 8 things that we are looking forward to, or want to learn about, or want to do in 2018. We used a new journaling technique, too. This morning, we also worked on our mental math, where we made our own multiplication charts. We need to know up to 9x9 in grade 4, and some of us went up to 12x12. We used cuisinaire rods to figure out some of the more trickier products. We'll look at some of the patterns that are present in multiplication charts. In the afternoon, we began our new read-aloud novel, "Owls in the Family" by Farley Mowat. We also have some questions to focus on while listening. We ended the day by continuing to work on our circular economy in science. We focused on a problem, then researched a way to make this problem more manageable from a waste standpoint. We'll finish it off tomorrow. Our new PE unit is gymnastics, which we began today with some work on mats. Next week, we start with the equipment, and the week after that is mission impossible... Check out the important dates below, especially January 31st, our first off-site field trip! Good night... ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
