Question of the night: How was your weekend? What kind of simple machine did you learn about today in your science centres?
Hello! What a fantastic day. We started with a circle, where we talked about what we do if we run into a problem that we cannot solve. We talked about some problem solving methods. After music, we worked on some number rumble, while Mr. V worked 1-on-1 with some students. Once we burned off some of our extra energy during recess, we finalized our book club groupings and schedules. Book clubs officially start tomorrow! In the afternoon, we read "secret", where we learned that benjamin blake was kidnapped by Ms. Mauvais and Dr. L... We also continued to work on our science centres, which taught us about levers, pulleys, and gears. We finish with our crate tomorrow! Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Communities helping Communities Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. As we explored ways of life in the Arctic, we were shocked to learn that a fire had devastated the community school in Kugaaruk, Nunavut. Not just a center for education, the school served as the community center with the arena, breakfast and lunch program, and special events. Grade 2’s at Prince of Wales have banded together, and following the design thinking process, explored how to best support this community. To support Kugaaruk School, Grade 2’s will host Intermural Floor Hockey in the gym from April 10th- April 20th from 12:00-12:30PM and welcome all donations (suggested donation is $2). Ms. Konno will be creating heartfelt cards with students in Room 9. The Grade 2’s also welcome cash donations in support of the community of Kugaaruk. Cash donations will be accepted from April 3rd to April 21st. Please see below for your Grade Schedule. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. Question of the night: How was your weekend? Anything exciting happen?
Hi! It's nice to be back online! This morning was packed with administrative setup work. We're working on our second book club of the year, which will start tomorrow. Today, students picked their books and tomorrow we'll work on scheduling our time. We'll use discussions on D2l to record our understandings. In math, we continue to work on our mental math and subtraction strategies. After this week, it's onto multiplication and division. We'll begin by building multiplication grids using cusinaire rods. In the afternoon, we began using our science in a crate. This kit is about wheels, levers, and pulleys. We have the crate until Wednesday, so we'll use that crate for those days. Don't forget the floor hockey fundraiser this week. Bring a toonie, if you're interested. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Communities helping Communities Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. Question of the night: What was your most memorable part of the plants presentation this morning?
Wowza, what a day! This morning, we learned about Botany from Scientist Laura. We spent the entire morning learning about the wonderful world of PLants. We got to make recycled paper, dissect a flower, explore microscopes, and many other amazing things. Thank you to all of the adult volunteers for making these experiences happen. In the afternoon, we worked on some of our math skills using "10 Monkeys", then built, reflected, and talked about some of our k'nex buildings. We looked at a blender and car window that uses gears, a sailboat that uses a block and tackle pulley, an arch bridge and a bastule bridge. We also even looked at a student creation of a convertible that turns into a farm tractor that turns into an airplane. Very imaginative...thanks to CM and TD. Power hour forms have gone home. Please return them ASAP with your selections. The power Hour website is here: Power Hour Courses. Check out the courses and pick your top choices. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Communities helping Communities Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. Question of the night: Why is it important to be careful about what you post online?
Hello! Wow, a full day of learning, again. We started today with our weekly circle. We talked about the feelings we invoke in others when we help them through a problem. The main reason we talked about charity and fundraising this morning was due to the grade 2s support of a town in Nunavut. Please see below for more information. After music this morning, we had some time for a new competition called "Number Rumble". It's a math competition over the next few weeks, where we're encouraged to simply play and have fun. We'll do this every few days. After recess, we worked on a bit of subtraction for math. We take a break tomorrow because of the scientist in the classroom, then re-visit subtraction, binary numbers, and trading posts on Thursday. We continued to build using k'nex, but before we started, we looked at a few of last day's creations. We studied a well that had a block and tackle pulley system; a flagpole with one pulley; a stationary bike with gears, wheels and axles; and a wheelbarrow (ie. lever). Tomorrow, we'll continue our builds, and probably talk about some bridges that were finished today. Power hour forms have gone home. Please return them ASAP with your selections. The power Hour website is here: Power Hour Courses. Check out the courses and pick your top choices. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Communities helping Communities Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada. Question of the night: What did you do on your spring break, and can you make a connection to our learning this year?
Welcome back! We had a great day back at school. We started by going to music...I keep hearing great things from Mrs. Dennill about our recorder playing! After music, we discussed spring break, focusing on the connections we made in our learning. The connections were plentiful, including rocks and minerals at Cave & Basin, the geography and animals of costa rica and peru, and many others. In the morning, we also talked about "fair" tests in science. We used various writing tools to show each other that tests have to be "fair" in order to use their results. After that, we learned a new game called "Countdown". We'll play again this week. After lunch, we did some problem solving involving shapes. I've attached one below, if you're interested in showing your parents. Remember, the challenge is to tell us which shape does not belong and why. I wonder if there is more than one answer? We continued to build using k'nex, but before we started, we tested the strength of a beam bridge v. a truss bridge. We made sure the test was "fair", and found out that truss bridges are very strong, which wasn't terribly surprising since they're often used as train bridges. Power hour forms went home today. Please return then ASAP with your selections. The power Hour website is here: Power Hour Courses. Check out the courses and pick your top choices. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Communities helping Communities Grade 2’s have been learning about communities across Canada.
