Question of the night: What name/person are you researching from calgary's history? Hello! We started this morning with a quickdraw. We talked about how it's important to look at a drawing's shapes, as well as it's proportion. We used height as an example: you can't just say, "The Calgary Tower is taller" - you have to compare its proportions to something else. After that discussion, we completed a pre-assessment in our visual journal. We titled it, "Multiplication is...", and we were tasked with representing our understanding of multiplication through words, numbers, and pictures. We'll re-visit this page after we've studied multiplication more closely. The rest of the morning was spent on historical calgary names. Students were challenged to first find the name of a road, building, school in calgary, then research where that name originated. we used "John Laurie Boulevard" as an example. It's attached to the bottom of this page, if you're interested in checking it out. Students will continue their research tomorrow. Don't forget to whisper the word "multiplication" to Mr. V tomorrow. FInally, in the afternoon, we had our final mosaics period. All groups are now finished. We'll discuss this representation of our learning later this week, or next week. Here are some long and short "o" word sounds to practice: tomorrow, follow, also, plot, hold, long, only, alone, suppose, goal, whole, shown, elbow, bow, stereo, explode. See you tomorroW! ____________________________________________________ Dec. 4 – 15 Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive This year will be the 29th annual food drive to support the Calgary Food Bank. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What was most memorable to you about Ms. Shirley HIll's visit?
Happy Monday! We began the morning with some math brain exercises. We worked, very briefly, on some place value "stuff", before jumping back into area and multiplication. We're working on shifting our thinking from one-dimensional shapes (ie. lines and lengths...think perimeter) to two-dimensional shapes (think area). We'll continue it all this week. After recess, we had an incredible time with Ms. Shirley Hill, a blackfoot member. She talked to us about kindness, then taught us some dances with cultural significance to the Blackfoot. We also learned that the four medicines of the blackfoot are sage, sweetgrass, tobacco, and cedar. It was an amazing experience! In the afternoon, we read some "Ticket to Curlew", where we found out that school ended in December and didn't start again until April. Winter storms were too risky!! We ended the day by talking about Calgary and its name. We studied an old book for information. Tomorrow we'll be looking for names of places in Calgary for some information on how names are chosen. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Nov. 1 – 14 Veteran’s Food Drive Since 2007, the Canadian Legacy Project has presented the Annual Veterans Food Drive in support of the Veterans Food Bank and the Calgary Poppy Fund. The support we have received from the Calgary community has been amazing and we have successfully filled two warehouses with food at the Calgary Veterans Food Bank annually, which equates to roughly $300,000 in food donations. As a part of this fundraising initiative we also receive cash donations which are used to purchase Calgary Co-Op food cards which veterans can use to purchase fresh produce, meats, and pharmaceutical products. A key component to the Annual Veterans Food Drive is educating our youth about the sacrifices made by our veterans. In partnership with The Calgary Board of Education (CBE), event information is sent to all schools. Question of the night: Why do we remember the soldiers that fought in wars?
Hello! This morning was our remembrance Day assembly. It was an incredibly powerful ceremony, and our grade 4 community was extremely respectful. Thank you to the grade 5s and musical theatre group for their incredible performances. As part of our study of remembrance day, we listened and watched a video about the highway of heroes in Ontario. We watched the following video: The Trews - Highway of Heroes. We also worked on our prairie mosaic this morning. Some groups are finished, and it will be great to see the finished product come together. Have a great weekend! ____________________________________________________ Nov. 1 – 14 Veteran’s Food Drive Since 2007, the Canadian Legacy Project has presented the Annual Veterans Food Drive in support of the Veterans Food Bank and the Calgary Poppy Fund. Question of the night: Tell us about Power Hour.
Hello! Mrs. K was in for Mr. V this morning. We worked on some grammar practice, including some tricky plural nouns. We also worked on some sorting practice with long & short "i" sounds. We'll finish off that sound rule on Monday next week. In the morning, we also worked with Ms. England on some remembrance day art. We are such artistic kids, and were very thoughtful and mindful about remembrance day. Please remember our ceremony tomorrow @ 10:45am. In the afternoon, we had power hour, then finished off the day with some PE. Please see the announcements below for some very important happenings. Have a Great night. ____________________________________________________ Remembrance Day Assembly We will be having our Remembrance Day assembly Friday, November 10th at 10:45am. Question of the night: WHen you close your eyes, what does peace look like to you?
Hello! We began the morning with some quick work on long and short "i" sound words. We'll be likely working on these for a few more days, and into next week. Being able to distinguish long vs. short vowel sounds is one of the most important skills skills for spelling. This morning, we also read the book, "the Enemy: a book about peace". We met as a big group and discussed the author's purpose for writing this book. Many of us felt that we, as people, have much more in common than we do in differences. We followed up that conversation with our grade 2 buddies in the afternoon, where we tried to describe what peace feels like. This afternoon, we also spent some time with Mrs. Dennill, then with Mrs. Cornford, before finishing the day with our grade 2 buddies. Please don't forget our remembrance Day ceremony is on Friday @ 10:45am. Also, Science fair forms will go home tomorrow. Bye for now. ____________________________________________________ Remembrance Day Assembly We will be having our Remembrance Day assembly Friday, November 10th at 10:45am. Question of the night: Name as many streets or places in Calgary that you know are named after important people in our history.
Hello! This morning, we started the day with some work as geographers, as we studied maps of Calgary. We looked at two maps, which are posted below. We were specifically looking for names of roads and places in Calgary that are named after important historical figures. We just scratched the surface this morning, so we'll likely continue tomorrow. Check out the maps below and see if you recognize some of the names of roads. In math, we continued to work on linking square units, in our case square centimetres, to area. Our next step will be to link area to multiplication. Today, we worked on building a shape with cusinaire blocks. We then proved that you can build it in multiple ways and still have the same area. FInally, we calculated the area in square centimetres. Whisper the word "area" to Mr. Veronese in the morning - it's worth 2 super student tickets! In the afternoon, we worked on our prairie mosaics. Wow, they are really coming along! Some groups are getting very close to completing the first phase, then move into finalizing their mosaic. We'll be showcasing this work on Wednesday at the parent council meeting. Oh, and of course, we had our first practice lockdown this morning. We did super well. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Nov. 1 – 14 Veteran’s Food Drive Since 2007, the Canadian Legacy Project has presented the Annual Veterans Food Drive in support of the Veterans Food Bank and the Calgary Poppy Fund. Question of the night: Post as many words you know that have a "q" not followed by a "u".
Hello! Wow, what a day! It was super cold this morning, which is a great reminder to make sure that we dress according to the weather. As much as we hope for summer-like weather, we have to face the fact that it's almost winter... This morning, we worked on using cusinaire rods to model area. We very briefly touched on this topic, which we'll revisit tomorrow. We had some time to struggle, which, as weird as it sounds, is good to see how much we persevere. In the afternoon, we worked with mrs. Bezugley, where she introduced us to offerings in indigenous culture. We'll be spending some time with Mrs. Shirley Hill, a knowledge keeper in the Blackfoot culture. Our first visit with Mrs. Hill is on Monday. We did not have time to look at the history of the name "Calgary". We'll look at it tomorrow morning. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Nov. 1 – 14 Veteran’s Food Drive Since 2007, the Canadian Legacy Project has presented the Annual Veterans Food Drive in support of the Veterans Food Bank and the Calgary Poppy Fund. Question of the night: If you had to use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?
This morning, we worked on our mosaic landscape. Each group is doing super well, and we're starting to glue our tiles on our backing. We're super excited to keep going! We also had to say mrs. Pulfer today. We're all going to miss her amazingness, and are excited to see her visit sometime soon. We spent some time representing our thankfulness for Mrs. Pulfer through art. Lastly, we met our kindergarten buddies and explored the notion of "peace". Have a great weekend! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: how was Power Hour? What did you do?
Happy Thursday! We began the day with our cusinaire rod trading post. Each student was given a "colour" to get, and they were challenged with trading with other students, or the bank, to get as many of those rods as possible. After our trading post, we began to work on our prairie landscape mosaic. We're working with various materials, and have a small part of a portrait on which we're working. The portrait is attached at the bottom. In the afternoon, we had power hour, then did some quick drawing before phys ed. Secret message: Whisper the word "mosaic" to Mr. V tomorrow for a super student ticket... ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What did the indigenous people around calgary call "Calgary"? Why did they call it that?
And here we are...november already! We started off the month with a quickdraw. These exercises are great for warming up our brains, as well as getting us to think about spatial awareness and perspective. We also read a cbc article about Calgary's name. We'll be continuing along this study either tomorrow or next week. Secret message: Whisper the word "Elbow" to Mr. V tomorrow for a super student ticket... We practiced a bit of our new spelling rule for this week: long and short "i" sounds. We are so great at these "rules", and we're really starting to think about them in our writing. After recess, we held our first trading post of the year. We use cusinaire rods as our money, then try to trade for a certain colour. This is a great way to build our understanding of numbers, especially as it applies to breaking numbers apart. Don't tell anyone, but we're having another trading post tomorrow. In the afternoon, we had music with mrs. dennill, library with mrs. cornford, and ticket to curlew with mr. V. The afternoon went by super quickly! Have a great night. Don't eat too much candy... ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
