Question of the night: What are your plans this weekend?
Hello Friday! We started the day by finishing off our last secret city skill: Density. Now that we've had exposure to these skills, we'll be looking at drawing in 3d. This morning, we also worked on our spring concert and our pink shirt day assembly songs. We'll continue all of these next week. Oh, and we also celebrated our failures. We ended off with the saying, "without failures, we have no successes." Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Estimate how much snow we've had over the last 2 days...
Wow, lots of snow today. We had a fairly quiet day today, since we had a significant number of people away. But, that doesn't mean learning stops. We began the day by writing a few skeleton stories of our favourite kids stories. Some of our stories were of Pinnochio, Goldielocks and the three bears, the three little pigs. We then listened (yes, listenend) to a book on record...the original Jungle book! Details really make the story much better!! We worked a little bit on place value and breaking numbers apart, then used that knowledge to help us with addition. We watched a video on adding multi-digit numbers. Here it is: Math Antics. In the afternoon, we worked with our kindergarten buddies, then played a new game called "beat the teacher". And yes, we really did beat the teacher. See you tomorrow. Enjoy the snow! ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Give us (at least) three ways to make the number 475.
Hello All! A great day of learning. We started the day working on story details. We began by reading a "skeleton" version of two stories: Goldilocks and the three little pigs. We then worked at adding details that were missed in our skeleton versions. This really got us thinking about how authors add details to make our stories not "snoozerama"... Before recess, we talked about our electric motors. We noticed that one group was able to get theirs to work, which then made the excuse, "This doesn't work", well, not work anymore. We then discussed our options: 1) give up 2) keep trying. We all chose option #2. In math, we quickly finished talking about breaking numbers apart, then we compared the size of numbers. We used a great video to remind us how to use the greater than, less than, or equal to signs. Here it is! We'll start with addition tomorrow... In the afternoon, we practiced our spring concert songs, then had our final exploration time with motors. We had more success this time around. Remember, this is just the first part of our study of motion. We'll keep working on this topic. And since we were talking about coils and electricity and electric motors, we also were able to watch the SpaceX's Falcon launch. Well, we missed the actual launch, but got to see it go into orbit! Bye for now! ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Have a look underneath the steering wheel of your car. How many pedals are there?
Hello All! We started the day with some Pe in the gym. Yes, that's right, PE in the morning, since we get to most our regular gym time with Ms. Shirley Hill. Speaking of Ms. Hill, we spent some time this morning acquiring some of her knowledge about water, where we talked about water as life, as well as its power. Ms. Hill talked to us about the number of Siksika families that were affected by the 2013 floods. We then returned back to the classroom and did some mapping work to figure out where in Alberta is the Siksika nation? We found that it is east of us, by Gleichen, and the Bow river runs right through it. We had a somewhat frustrating afternoon. We worked, once again, on our electric motors. We talked about the factors that could be blocking our way to success: the coils, the wires, or the battery. We found some brand new batteries, which we were able to use fro today's exploration. Our success rate went up 100%, since one group was able to produce some motion. We have our final 30 minutes tomorrow. I wonder if maybe we can use different type of wire? See you tomorrow. ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: What do you think was the most interesting part of our Friday Flick?
Wow, the morning just flew by today. We started the day with Phys Ed, then moved into our weekly circle. While in our circle, we created the tobacco offering for Ms. Shirley Hill's visit next week. Balance is a large part of the Blackfoot culture: in exchange for Shirley Hill's knowledge of water, we will be offering her some tobacco. For our friday flick this week, we watched a nova about the Roman's ingenious use of simple machines. The romans were quite amazing engineers! We worked on a few measurement puzzles, then cashed in a bit of our earned time. Overall, a great day! Have a great weekend... ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year. Question of the night: Try out the Die Hard water problem on your parents. Look below for a link...
Today was a quiet day. We had a large contingent of grade 4s taking part in science fair, which made our community significantly smaller. We began the day by studying the "die Hard" problem. Yes, from the movie, but don't worry, we didn't watch the whole movie... Basically, the problem is simple. You have a 5 gallon bucket and a 3 gallon bucket. you also have an unlimited amount of water. You have to measure out exactly 4 gallons, or Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson will not make it out alive and be able to make more die hard movies, which would be a shame. Here's a small clip from the movie. Pause after 42 seconds, then try the problem. Die Hard! We also talked this morning a bit about simple machines and had another brainstorming session. we're getting closer to beginning our own stories. In the afternoon, we met up wth our kindergarten buddies and led them around science fair. Wow, what amazing projects!! We were very well represented in grade 4... For the last hour of the day, we played a new math game called countdown. If you remember the rules, try it out with your parents. If not, we'll try it again in class really soon. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Grade 4 Students at Prince of Wales School Current Grade 4 students living within the Legacy community who are currently attending Grade 4 at Prince of Wales School will be enrolled at Wilma Hansen School for Grade 5 for the 2018-2019 school year.
