Question of the night: Not a question but a challenge. If more than 10 people post comments on our blog tonight, we'll gain some time for our earned time on Friday...Good luck!
This morning we started talking about waste and our world, which is one of our science units for this year. we watched a video about an innovative new product available in India - edible cutlery. We talked about how it's worthwhile to talk about the problems we face, but it's also worthwhile to talk about possible solutions. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-2WiqOtlqg We also had our first math challenge of the year. The equation was Mr Veronese = 136. The challenge was to figure out what this equation means, making sure to adequately prove your thinking. We continued to read "wonder", and are almost finished modeling our literacy centres. We start on those tomorrow. Have a great night. Reminders:
Question of the night: Since arctic explorers found the HMS Terror this week (One of Sir John Franklin's ships), and in the spirit of exploration, where is the one place in the world you would like to go?
Hello again. This morning we continued to model our literacy centres, which will officially "launch" next week. Today's centres were focused on independent research and formulating words from letters. We had music with Mrs. Dennill, then talked about D2L. We discovered a few "bugs" with D2l, so we'll have to get those fixed before using it this year. In the afternoon, we continued on our handwriting with letters "i" and "t", both lower case. After that, we began discussing our classroom community and related it to global communities around the world. We'll continue that tomorrow. Have a great night. Reminders:
Question of the night: not a question, but explain the game "picky Penelope" to an adult.
Happy Monday. We began the day with music, then jumped right into math with some sorting. We're trying to come up with rules (or algorithms) that will help us when solving problems. We'll continue this work all this week. We also began talking about our literacy centres, which will begin in full next week. This week, we're modeling the centres to know exactly what needs to be done. We continued to read wonder today, and found out a few more characters' names, including an unfortunately named Principal - Mr. Tushman...yes, that's right. In the afternoon, we began handwriting with the letters e and l. Then, we had an Independent Work Period (or IWP) to catch up on some unfinished work. Have a great night. Reminders:
Question of the night: No question...just enjoy the weekend. Be safe!
Thank you for everyone that posts comments on our blog - it's always great to read your comments. Today we started the day with our first Circle of Courage this morning. OUr "Circles" are built on the principle of trust and respect: we always trust that our thoughts will only stay inside the circle, and we respect our colleagues' feelings. We'll do these circles at least once per week just to touch base with how everyone is feeling. We also began writing today, and our first task was to write an introduction letter to Mr. Veronese. We'll continue next week. Finally, we started our novel study today, Wonder. It's about a boy named August that was born with a facial deformity. We have questions to answer while reading. We just read the first few pages. SUTP books went home today, as well as a communication form. Please return them as quickly as possible. Have a great weekend. Reminders:
Question of the night: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM THIS PAST SUMMER?
Hello everyone! Wow, it's hard to believe that the first week is almost over. This morning was our first session with Mrs. Dennill in Music - that's always an exciting time! We did a small spelling check this morning, which MR. V USES TO SEE WHAT HE NEEDS TO FOCUS ON IN SPELLING. WE'LL BE STARTING GUIDED READING LIKELY NEXT WEEK, AND ONE OF THE CENTRES WILL BE FOCUSED ON SPELLING. WE ACTUALLY GOT TO PLAY A BIT OF 99 THIS AFTERNOON, WHICH WAS GREAT FUN. IT'S SUCH A GREAT WAY TO PRACTICE YOUR MENTAL MATH AND ADDITION. OH, BUT BEFORE THAT, WE TRIED TO ANSWER THE QUESTION, "WHAT IS MATH?" WE FIGURED OUT THAT MATH IS ALL AROUND US, NOT JUST IN SCHOOL. SOME EXAMPLES WERE BUILDING HOUSES OR IN ART PATTERNS. AT THE END OF THE DAY WE ALL SUCCESSFULLY LOGGED INTO THE COMPUTERS, WHICH IS GREAT. WE THEN SPENT A FEW MINUTES EXPLORING OUR CLASS WEBSITE. THE WEBSITE IS TAILORED TO GRADE 4 RIGHT NOW, WHILE MR V CONTINUES TO BUILD THE GRADE 3 SECTION. THAT WILL BE POSTED SOON. PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR FORMS. BYE FOR NOW. Reminders:
Question of the night: What was your favourite part of the first two days of school? Please comment below.
Hi Everyone! It was very exciting to see all of the comments on our blog today. Since we use this blog as our main communication tool, please continue to read it and post comments on it...it makes it all worth it! Today, we began the day by reading "the Important Book". Most of our class had read the book before, but sometimes our thoughts on the same book change as we get older. We are in the midst of creating a book about all the important things of each and every single one of us. We'll continue this week. We also completed a few inventories about ourselves: the first one was about our learning and the second was about our lives outside of school. We use these to better know each other. In the afternoon, we worked on a school-wide scavenger hunt. Did you know that there are 8 water fountains in the school... We also learned a new card game. It's called 99 and uses lots of math. We'll talk about the rules again tomorrow. Reminders:
Welcome back! Wow, where did the summer go? What an exciting first day of school: we learned some new games, got to meet our new learning community, and even completed our first piece of art. I wonder what tomorrow holds.
Ms. B, our student teacher, was in today. She doesn't officially start until October, but she wanted to hang out with us on the first day of school. We'll see her again soon. We learned about our new classroom space and had to plan where we want things to go in our learning space. We'll use that input over the next few weeks. Phew, I think that does it. We'll do it all over again tomorrow...see you then. Please contact me with any questions or concerns - I'm always ready to hear your thoughts. Reminders:
