Question of the night: There is only one word (I think) in english that doesn't have a "u" follow a "q". What is it? (Hint...You studied this Place in grade 2!)
We started the morning with music, where we continue to study our remembrance day songs. Remember to practice on D2L! We also studied some equations with cusinaire rods, and figured out that the order in addition doesn't matter. We're still using colours with our cusinaires, not numbers. We continued with wonder, where we're getting more of a view into Via's life and mind. In the afternoon, we practiced the letter "q", hence the question of the night. Then, we worked with Ms. Gray to explore and journal the "Curiosity Cabinet" at the front of the school. We had a great time sketching the artifact, talking about its possible use, then writing about our thoughts. We'll do that every time the cabinet changes. Have a great night! Book orders are due tomorrow, if you want. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. Question of the night: What did you think of the t-rex artwork that we studied today?
Our first day of walking wednesday was a huge success. We'll continue this initiative again next week. We continued to work with cusinaire rods this morning, and specifically started studying equations. We even got into the commutative property of addition...but that's a story for another night. We'll continue tomorrow. In wonder today, we finally figured out that Auggie's sister is named Olivia, or via for short. We continue to read from her perspective. In the afternoon, we worked on a thinking routine called "See-Think-Wonder", then looked at a very cool art piece by chris jordan. The link is here: t-Rex?. This all ties into our concept of choice this year. Don't forget to practice our remembrance day songs on D2L...it's coming up quickly. By for now. ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. Question of the night: What's your best guess for Via's, Auggie's sister, full name? (Don't answer if you have read it already.)
A nice day back from the long, long weekend. We began the day with a circle, where we shared about our weekend, as well as what makes our friends like us. After that, it was off to music. We continue to work on literacy centres daily, as well as Wonder. We are now reading the book from Via's point of view...what's her full name?? In the afternoon, we briefly talked about the Earth's Crust. We'll be continuing this conversation later, and talking about the choices people make to live on fault lines or earthquake/volcano-prone areas. Oh, and don't forget Power Hour...it was session 2 this afternoon. Go Jays! ____________________________________________________ Walking Wednesday Any students who walk, ride, bike to school on Wednesday will be entered for a prize. Question of the night: We had some different opinions how to write a lowercase cursive "o". Do some research, and tell us what you find.
We did some more journaling this morning, and imagined a worlds without garbage landfills. What would that world be like? We also continued to work on patterning, and started to work on patterns found in numbers. In the afternoon, we talked about goals. All of our goals are about choice: I choose to be... Parent-Teacher conferences are tonight. See you then. Have a great night! PS. Question of the night: Tell us about a choice you're proud of making.
What a great day! We started the day with Ms. Raine from Green Calgary. She taught us all about worms and vermicompost. We even got to study real worms and learned some more about their lifecycles. This links to our study of waste and our world and animal lifecycles. We also completed two more centres today - These centres are all about literacy. In wonder, we started part II, which is written from Via's point of view. We still don't know her full name, but we're starting to understand what she is like. In the afternoon, we began talking about choices, which is our overarching concept for this entire year. Specifically, our inquiry question is, "How do my choices affect me, my community, and the world in which I live?" We re-watched the edible cutlery video through the lens of choice. The inventor had a choice: he could've ignored the problem of plastic spoons, or he could've done something about it. He chose to do something, and now we have another option other than plastic cutlery. We'll talk more tomorrow. Have a great night! PS. Question of the night: Tell us about your power Hour today?
We began the day with a sharing circle this morning - it's a great way to be safe and respectful to others. We'll do these all year. We also started with two new centres this morning. We're working hard on making sure that our voices are in control during these times, as this is when Mr. V reads with students on a one-to-one basis. In the afternoon, we continued with our handwriting with the letter "c", which looks like a wave. Tomorrow is "d". We also begain exploring cusinaire rods, and are going to continue work on patterns and relationships using these tools. This afternoon was our first POWer Hour session. I'm excited to hear about your experiences. Comment on today's blog. TOMOrrow we have Green Calgary in the classroom to talk to us about worms, composting, animal lifecycles, and waste. It'll be a full hour! See you tomorrow. ____________________________________________________ Power Hour Sept 2016 Grades 1 & 2 -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DYTPMD Grades 3 to 6 -- https://studio.code.org/sections/DSBGDD ____________________________________________________ A note from our class coordinator, Jenny Fech, is below: Our classroom email coordinator this year is Jenny Fech. Question of the night: What was the most interesting part of the movie "Rise of the Robots"?
Mrs. K was in our classroom all day today. We worked on some math paper folding to strengthen our mental math. We also worked on journaling this morning. In the afternoon, we watched a video called "Rise of the Robots". This was a warm up to our work on simple machines and building. Mr. V will be back tomorrow...and so will literature centres! Yay! Students are invited to choose a DO that makes their mark, crazy hair day! Toonies for Terry Challenge Starting Monday, we will be collecting Toonies for Terry (any donation will be accepted, spare change). IF by Thursday after school we have raised $500, STAFF WILL FLAUNT THEIR OWN CRAZY HAIR DO and will "Do the Do for Terry" as well!
