Question of the night: Finish this sentence: volunteers are.........
An arts inspired thursday. Yes, you read that right! We worked on a few new art techniques today. We started with some work with Ms. Ferrari on clay. We learned ways to make a pinch pot, then different techniques of building up the sides. We'll work over the next few weeks to finish off our creations. We also worked on a top secret piece of art. It's inspired by busy bees...that's all we're going to say. It uses corn syrup and food colouring...and yes, you read that right as well! In the afternoon, we had our second-to-last session of power hour, then a little bit on our alberta builders research. We'll continue tomorrow. Have a great night! Volunteer tea is tomorrow morning. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Tell us one memorable thing about our field trip today.
Hello! Wow, what an amazing trip to the reader rock garden and union cemetery. We had beautiful weather, which really makes the day fly! We got to spend some time in the "potato" room of Mr. Reader's house...hmm, I wonder why they would store potatoes in the basement? We also enjoyed a tour of the garden's amazing grounds. After our tour of the gardens, we visited the Union Cemetery, where many of Calgary's prominent citizens are buried. We were able to locate the resting places of Colonel James Macleod, Sam Livingston (eventhough his name is spelled "livingstone" on his tombstone), the Lougheed family plot, AE Cross, John Ware...cemeteries really are like museums into the past. Oh, and of course, we created our own stories in the afternoon, inspired by the animals and settings around us. They were, how shall I put it...ummm, entertaining. Have a great night. Drink lots of water... ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: tell us one thing you learned from "Drylanders".
First of all, please remember our field trip to the Reader Rock Garden in downtown Calgary tomorrow. We are missing a number of field trip forms, so please bring them tomorrow. And, of course, dress for the weather. It's supposed to be quite warm, so make sure sunscreen is in your "dress" plans. We had a great day back from the the long weekend. It's hard to believe that we are almost into June, but it's true. We began the day today with a bit more work on patterns. We finished off our discussion with a few "magic Squares", which we'll continue to work on Thursday or Friday. After that, we're into Algebra, before finishing off with some more multiplication/division and fractions. It'll be a busy month. We spent some time with Mrs. Dennill today. Please remember your recorder everyday, so you won't miss a chance to perform for your belt! We also finished the movie "Drylanders", then talked a little bit about how early farmer in Alberta had very different technologies than farmers today. Irrigation and access to water is definitely one of those differences. In the afternoon, we continued to work on our Builders of Alberta research. Our research is coming along, and some students are ready to begin their adobe spark video... Again, don't forget our trip tomorrow! Have a good night. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Post an increasing or decreasing pattern.
Hello! We started the day right away with a new round of writing clubs. We've split the two classes into three groups, with one group learning about poetry with Ms. Gray, the other working with Ms. Mosher on persuasive writing, and the last with Mr. V working on expository writing. We'll keep doing this for 3 weeks. We also worked a bit on our picture book questions. We're all ready to start tomorrow afternoon! We rounded out the morning with some math patterns work. We are in the preliminary stages of organizing a math fair night in June. Stay tuned!! In the afternoon, we watched a bit of drylanders, then worked on our picture book questions. We didn't have too much time to work on our builders of Alberta research. We'll focus on it more tomorrow. Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Use one word to describe your mom.
What a day! We still can't get into too much detail about most of the morning...shh, it's a surprise... We also worked a little bit on our mousetrap cars. We're working on getting our levers right. We are working with Ms. Shirley Hill on Monday morning, so please dress for the weather. It's likely to be warm, so please remember your sunscreen. We'll be walking to fish creek ridge in the morning. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What did you do in Power Hour?
Hello!! What a day. We can't really go into too much detail...it's top secret...so, we'll talk mostly about the afternoon. We continued to watch a bit of drylanders, had a book club session, and finished with power hour... Doesn't seem like alot, so why are we so tired?? Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What is one thing that was memorable about our trip to the ranch?
Wow, what an amazing day on the ranch! We spent the entire day learning about the early history of ranching in Alberta. We studied the history of the OH ranch, talked about ecosystems, hiked to the "sugar shack", and sketched some beautiful landscapes. This trip was truly amazing! Mr. V will do it all over again tomorrow with Ms. Mosher's class. Mrs. K will be in to teach us... Have a great night. Get some rest. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Do you have any questions for our field trip tomorrow?
We started the day off with a bang...or was it a snap? We continued to work on our mousetrap cars. Some of us our fine tuning our designs, others are testing, and everyone else is somewhere in between. This is frustrating work...no wonder cars take so long to design and build! After that, we started watching a National Film Board film called "DryLanders". It takes place in saskatchewan, but essentially tells the story of the many people that settled the west. It is a long film, and we are only about 20 minutes into it. We used it as inspiration for our trip to the OH Ranch tomorrow. I will send an email home as a reminder. In the afternoon, we started our last week of Book Club. After that, we were able to have a quick look at the World War I museum kit, where we were able to explore some amazing artifacts. Have a great night! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Have a great weekend. Do you have any big plans?
May the 4th be with you! Wow, what a day! We started the day with some PE, then read some Fish in a Tree. We had a great walk to the ridge with our kindergarten buddies. We worked together with them to clean-up our community. It's amazing how much garbage we collected - we were so focused! When we returned, we met up with Mr. Kenzie, and he filmed some of our work on mousetrap cars. Some of us began testing, which only led to some more design problems. We'll continue on MOnday. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What did you do during power hour?
Hello! Mrs. K was again in for Mr. V today, as he was in meetings all day... We had our last writing club session this morning. Remember, you can continue to write your expository writing piece online. And, if it's shared with Mr. V, he will give you feedback on your work. We worked some more on patterns today. Since we're pretty much experts on increasing and decreasing patterns, we're going to start looking at pattern rules next week. All of this is gearing us up to work with t-tables and problems involving patterns. In the afternoon, we had PoWer hour, then had our last session of book club for the week. We have only one week left in our books! Please don't forget to return your OH Ranch field trip form. We are going next tuesday. Also, another notice was sent home about media consent. If you have any questions, please contact me. Please don't forget that we are walking with our buddies to the ridge tomorrow. Dress appropriately! We spent some time outside at the end of the day. We'll be doing that more and more as the weather turns warmer. Have a nice night. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
