Question of the night: what does "fair" mean in math?
We began the day in our writing clubs. It's likely that these were our last meetings together, and some of Mr. V's group were ready to present their research findings. After writing groups, it was right into health. We again talked about the many changes that take place during puberty, and how most of these changes are the same for both boys and girls. Some changes, of course, apply only for boys, while some others apply only to girls. We watched a couple of videos to re-enforce those points. In math, we continued to look at division, and paid particular emphasis on using base-10 blocks to help with division. Don't worry, long division is coming soon! In the afternoon, we visited with Mrs. Dennill, then worked on our "Historicalgary" work. Most of us started building in minecraft. During our trip tomorrow, we will have the opportunity to visit most of our historical buildings, especially the ones that are around city hall and stephen avenue. Please remember your field trip forms! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What historical Building in Calgary did you choose to research?
We once again started the day with a few Builders of Alberta presentations. Today's presentations were on the Northwest Mounted Police, David Thompson, and Joseph Tyrrell. All of these people, or organizations, were instrumental in the creation of our province. Later in the morning, we once again spent some time together discussing the changes to be expected during puberty. We had great conversations. Homework Alert again tonight! In math, we made sure to understand that "fair" in math means equal, especially as it applies to division. We are currently using a few different techniques to evaluate some division statements. We'll be moving into "long division" tomorrow. We'll start by, once again, breaking down numbers, then using our multiplication skills...yes, that's right, multiplication NOT division. In the afternoon, we began a new inquiry on Calgary's historical architecture. We'll be using our trip to downtown as inspiration for this inquiry. We have all chosen a historical building in downtown Calgary, which we will re-create in our minecraft world. We may start building tomorrow. Please remember your field trip forms! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What do you think scientists mean by the term "mirror image"?
Welcome back! We began the day with a few builders of Alberta presentation. We will continue with those tomorrow, so please ensure that you are finished. You must work on it at home, though. We learned lots about James Macleod, William Aberhart, Guy Weadick, and Nellie McClung today. We began our health unit this morning. Most of our conversations will revolve around changes that take place during puberty. These can be body changes, relationship changes, and thought changes. We started to talk about some of the great things about puberty and some of the more difficult or tough things. Homework Alert: Students are to have an "interview" with a trusted adult tonight. Please sign it and bring it back tomorrow. We very briefly worked on division today. We'll continue tomorrow. In the afternoon, we focused on reflection v. Refraction. We worked with mirrors and proved that reflected images are "backwards". We then tried to use multiple mirrors to get the reflected image to go the "right' way. Oh, and we also studied refraction too, and noticed the difference between these two concepts. Field trip forms went home today. Sorry for the tardiness. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Have a great weekend.
Again, where does the time go? It seemed that we were on overdrive all day! We started right away with PE, then read a little bit of "Wishtree". After that, we spent some time on our picture book experts, then went right into some multiplication & Division triangles. We'll continue on those next week. At the end of the day, we spent some time with our kindie and ducky buddies. Health starts next week...be prepared! ____________________________________________________ We will be finished our "Karate Recorders", June 11th. Grade 4: Tuesdays Students may come on those days (lunch/recess) for extra testing and practice in the music room. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: how much is the "5" in the number 54 worth?
How does the day fly so quickly? Oh, it must be because we're having so much fun!! We started the day with a science experiment. We worked with materials to figure out which ones reflected light, and which ones "absorbed" light. We used light boxes, which makes it much easier to see work with the light. I know that sounds weird, but trust us, it makes sense in the classroom. We continued to work on multiplication. Today we worked on the traditional stacked multiplication. We'll be working through some more examples tomorrow. Then, it's on to division!! In the afternoon, we visited Mrs. Dennill, then worked on our picture books, before watching a Science Max on water power. Check out the message from Mrs. Dennill below... Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ We will be finished our "Karate Recorders", June 11th. Question of the night: tell us 4 ways that you can break up the number 47 by using addition?
Welcome back...after the long weekend. We got right into things this morning. We're in the middle of finishing off our study of light. We focused a bit on reflections this morning, and we'll continue tomorrow. The rest of the morning was spent on multiplying multi-digit numbers. we're still working on our "Box" method, then we'll get into the traditional algorithm, sometimes called "stacked" multiplication. In the afternoon, we spent our last class time on our builders project. We'll be starting presentations tomorrow. So, if you're not finished, this is now homework. You can access all your google docs and adobe spark online. Have fun!! Check out the message from Mrs. Dennill below... Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ We will be finished our "Karate Recorders", June 11th. Question of the night: have a great weekend!
Whoa, where does the time go? We started the day with a bit of PE, then went right into our picture book experts. Oh, and of course, we read a bit of "wishtree" this morning. We continued to work on our builders of Alberta inquiry. It has been going super well. Our last research period is on Tuesday. Lastly today, we worked some more on multi-digit multiplication. We're going into division early next week. There is no school on Monday...and Tuesday is Bike to School Day. Have a great weekend! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: How would you solve this problem: 47 x 6?
Another day, another new math concept. We worked on multi-digit multiplication this morning. We used arrays to show that multiplication has a distributive property. For example: 16 x 5 = (10 x5) + (6 x 5)...we'll continue to work on this tomorrow. Don't forget our builders of Alberta project. Most of us are well into our final phase, and we're excited to show our learning! in the afternoon, we worked on our picture books, then met with Mrs. dennill, and Mrs. Cornford. See you tomorrow - we'll do it all over again! ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: Tell us (at least) one thing that the future will have.
Another scorcher today! We took the opportunity today to study the sun's movements in the sky. We studied our shadows throughout the day, and we'll be looking for patterns tomorrow. Who knew that we'd have to use math while studying science! We had another session working on our Alberta builders project. Some of us are into our final adobe spark presentation, while others are finishing up our research. We'll likely schedule some time next week to watch our final presentations. Of course, no day would be complete without a little reading (picture book experts) and math. We're getting through Algebra pretty quickly, which is good, since we'll be looking at double-digit multiplication and division next!!! Have a great night. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
Question of the night: What are your plans this weekend?
Thank you to all of the volunteers. You are amazing! We worked a little bit with our kindie buddies this morning. We always love spending time with them! We continue to work on our builders of Alberta research. We're getting fairly close to wrapping up our research, then we're heading into the presentation stage. Some of us started using adobe spark this morning, which is what we'll be using to present our understandings. We ended the day with a bit of work on magic squares. This is a great exercise to work on patterns, arithmetic, and algebra. Have a great weekend. ____________________________________________________ Important Dates:
